OK, this week was a step up from last week’s episode, but there are still problems. First of all it has gotten way to easy to kill Terminators. Why is it this “magic bullet” has never been around in previous incarnations of the franchise? It’s not fan service to see a Terminator constantly get killed on this series. In fact, just the opposite would be more suspenseful and interesting. The writer’s job would be much tougher if the Terminator didn’t get killed though. It would be necessary for the Connors to come up with more creative means to thwart the plans of SkyNet. Also, what happened to going on the offensive against the future and SkyNet? It seems like the crew has spent most of the season so far in defense mode.
In previous incarnations of the Terminator franchise, Sarah was beat down by her knowledge of what’s to come. In fact, there’s that fantastically effective dream sequence in the second film where she can’t seem to stop the coming destruction. Why aren’t the creators of the series building these dream sequences into the show? Heady does a good job of being burdened on the show it would just be nice to see that burden played out more in the series. Seeing Sarah be challenged by a young child was a step forward in that direction. The scene where he tells her she’s not a very good mom and her response that she is trying to get better is particular strong.
The reading of the book by Sarah and the kid utilized as narration during the fight scenes with the particularly intimidating Triple * was also a really impactful scene. If only the resolution of that scene weren’t so tied up. Dekker is back this week and Cameron has almost nothing to do. The writers really need some help with balancing this ensemble cast. Other series have much larger casts and they do a better job of including everyone in each episode.
Also of note this week is the really low budget looking scenes from the future. On top of the look of the scenes, the actor who played Martin Badell looked way too young in the scenes and he never had the presence of a leader, especially in the same room with Dekker.
Catherine Weaver’s story is getting more interesting because with her it appears that SkyNet has finally decided not to hedge its bets on simply defeating the resistance in the past because they’ve not had much success. Her procedure is to move into a position of influence in a large company and slowly quietly build SkyNet and to tie up any lose ends that happen to get in the way. Shirley Manson isn’t the strongest of actors but she does make a cool looking Terminator. She’s a better actress than Kristanna Loken. Her story does convolute the waters of continuity a bit within the franchise though.
This episode overall is a much stronger installment than last weeks. Sarah had a few small moments that really worked and the reference to the film of how the Terminator will find his prey was cool. Although I do wonder: Why couldn’t SkyNet have programmed him to use the internet?
