There’s a lot wrong with this episode, but what’s right about it makes up the difference and then some. Surprisingly for an action based series, the characters and drama between them made up for the lackluster overall plot. The show-runners have done a good job of picking interesting actors for side characters and the writers have taken good advantage of these actors, possibly to the detriment of the overall story arc. Busy Philips from Freaks and Geeks is a fun addition to the series. She hasn’t had a lot to do yet, but when she is on screen, she does a great job. She is a tool for humanizing a group of people who often have to live as machines themselves in order to defend themselves against attacking Terminators.

Riley, as I previously mentioned, is also an interesting character. Levin Rambin is a great actress for this part and she and Thomas Dekker seem to have some on screen chemistry together. There’s room for discussion about John’s motivations with Riley though. He has seen over and over again what happens to people that get close to he and his mother yet he still continues to bring Riley closer and closer into his inner circle. John will grow up to be a leader and a fighter, but he still maintains a compassionate side, a side of himself he gets from his mother.

Sarah denies her compassionate side where John does not but when the chips are down she will fight to save people, those close to her and those that aren’t. She finds herself sneaking away from John to save her ex-husband and his new wife. The fact that she doesn’t involve John is fantastic because as I’ve said before this show should be focused on Sarah protecting John and fighting the Terminators. She wants to do the right thing but she leaves John at home in hopes of not putting John’s life at risk. At the same time, doesn’t any plan that Cromartie comes up with involve killing John? Shouldn’t she have expected it from the beginning?

Speaking of Cromartie, seeing him utilize something as old school as a mousetrap was fantastic but his explanation of it was way too human. His dialogue is creepy in a murderer sort of way not in an emotionless machine way. This is just another humanizing misstep for the series like all of the others previously mentioned in these reviews. Also, why would he leap into the water if he knows that he can’t swim? This scene was fairly ridiculous and annoying. Speaking of humanizing, the jealousy issues with Cameron have to stop. It just doesn’t fit, she’s a robot. She does do her job in this episode and the scene where Riley spots her is amusing.

Not much happened this week and characters seemed to make dumb mistakes in a few spots that didn’t fit their characters but overall, the characters all had interesting scenes and they were all compelling. Other shows (True Blood, cough, cough) feature poor actors for secondary characters and uninteresting side stories – not the case with Sarah Connor Chronicles, at least so far. The death at the end of the episode was sad and the funeral scene displayed the blatant differences between humans and Terminators but we knew this actress had to go; she has another show to do.

Do you like this series? If so, then you need to get three friends to watch, and they need to get three friends to watch and so forth. The ratings have dropped substantially since last season, so if you want to see the show continue, get out there and get your friends watching and chatting about it on the interwebs.

I thought the episode was solid as usual. I honestly think that we as an audience need to stop looking at this like the Terminators from the movie. There are intricacies to the terminators in this show. They can't just have the same old, total machine like Arnie or Robert Patrick type robots running around every episode. It works for a 2 hour movie but not a whole series. We all realize by now that Cameron is unlike any terminator we have seen. She dances like a ballerina and eats. She obviously has feelings of some kind. We have seen it in many movies, like I,Robot. Even Skynet to an extent became self aware. It kind of had feelings. Why can't a terminator?
As far as Cromartie, they have to make him somewhat humanistic. That other terminator who married a woman, did the same. Bottom line, these aren`t the terminators from the movie. After watching her, again, I starting to dislike Shirley Manson`s character. She is trying way too hard in her role. Did anyone notice that she wasn't really drinking the water? She put it to her mouth but that was it. Ellison seemed to notice too.
I`m pretty sure Cromartie knew he couldn`t swim but his mission is to kill John Connor. And like every other terminator in the past he`ll do anything to complete the mission. That what makes him more machine than Cameron. I didn`t know the ratings had dropped, but hopefully they will at least be allowed to finish the season. FOX sucks!

Of course the ratings are crap... They put the show on against Monday Night Football! And now Heroes! It is FOX though, so we shouldn't be surprised. Its a real shame, its a good show and I hope some stuffed suit out west gets it.

Mania, you should have a weekly ratings article if we are going to start talking about it. Ratings are odd, Heroes ratings have dropped from the first season but its still good enough to keep the show around. Same with Lost so you have to be a little more specific. I don't think its going up against Heroes. Isn't Heroes going to be on after Terminator each Monday? Thought the episode was just okay. Nothing special but I didn't think it sucked.

Me & Joey told you Shirley Manson sucked balls. Glad you are finally realizing it. Terminator won't be against Heroes. It will be against Chuck, Dancing with the Stars and Monday Night Football. The ep was alright (the less Manson the better) but I don't buy Sarah putting that chic's life before John's. She knows the Terminator set them up to get to John and that he knows his location. Instead of flooring it to get to John she stops so that guy can help his wife? Sure let's help her but not the guy whose life means the humans have a chance against the machines in the future!!

Good point Hanso. I know she internalizes alot of shit, but I don`t think that she has that much faith in John yet, to just let him fend for himself against Cromartie. I would have kicked them out of the damn truck and went after my son.

The episode was good, but I have to agree at least a little that the Terminators are getting a little too "human." That plan of Cromartie's was awfully intricate. I know he's a computer and computers are complex machines, but it seems a plan that is that involved strays a lot from a Terminator's programming. Terminator's don't do plans, they just seek and destroy. And, he's little story about the mouse trap seemed out of place. Why does a terminator need to explain his plan to anyone?

That also brings up something I noticed during the chase scene on the pier. When Cromartie turns the guy around who is wearing John's clothes, he just let's the guy go! What? Any Terminator is so easily duped by something like that would not hesitate to blow the decoy away just for the trouble.

And, Shirley Manson's T-1000 is way too human in every possible way even if she didn't actually drink the water.

Did the review say Sarah's ex-husband? I could be wrong but I thought they were engaged, but never married.

I thought this was a solid episode. B territory. Like last season I’m seeing marked improvement with each episode. As far as too human Terminators: What pony said. Also, I don’t know that I’d take the leap that we’ve seen Cameron actually jealous of Riley yet (though I’m sure we eventually will). She was ordered to keep an eye on John so that’s what she did. If anything she was actually trying to be discreet and respectful of John’s space while carrying that out. Don’t forget, her primary mission (as far as we know) is to protect John Connor I love the way her character is developing. Her programming is definitely evolving. She’s developing outside interests (the ballet pony mentioned) and the scene where she determined that they would need to repaint the house next year was kinda her way of showing her domestic side. I had no problem with Cromartie jumping into the ocean after John. Had he gotten a hold of him, John would have sunk right to the bottom with him and drowned. Made sense from a Terminator perspective if you ask me. I agree on the side characters. I’m enjoying them very much. Hope they get to stick around for a bit. They advertised someone was dying this ep and it surely weren’t no surprise with who that was. I was actually a bit disappointed they killed Dixon’s wife so early in the series. Kinda took the easy way out with her IMO. I assume this clears the way for Dixon to join our ragtag group. I hope we’re seeing a pre-war resistance movement growing here. And with regard to Manson’s acting: Join the hate pony! She creates a vacuum that draws ball-like objects into it. Definitely the weakest link, though her Terminator character’s back story got a little interesting. She make that shite up or did she kill the original CEO & her brother? Terminator parts showing up at accident sites is a pretty interesting development. Did we know about that plane crash already? At any rate, kill her quick or have her spend most of the time as the other dude from last week. Agree Sarah stopping to help Dixon’s wife was a bit foolish but don’t forget she was in love with Dixon not that long ago (taking Time-Traveling into consideration) plus she knew John was with Cameron. But.. yeah. Maybe out of character given the situation. Mrs. Dixon was kind of a bitch anyway. And I disagree, Redhairs. If at first they don’t succeed Terminators will try and try again and will go to elaborate means to get the job done using everything, including their knowledge of human psychology, to get the job done. Don’t forget the Terminator from last season that got married for the love of SkyNet! And I’d like to second Hobbs suggestion we start getting weekly ratings reports. Top Ten each week plus a rundown on where the genre shows covered here fall with a little placement perspective.

It was an elaborate plan but he had to do it. Cromartie has no leads on John so he can't just seek & destroy. Baloney, I don't think the plane crash had been mentioned before. I do agree the eps are getting better so I won't bail on it for Chuck. Although good news for me, I put my foot down and said "Damn it woman we are not watching Dancing with the Stars. You hear me!!? No Dancing with the Stars. We will watch Terminator & DVR Chuck cause I am a man! a man that created fire!" That's how it played out in my head, in reality it was Mrs.Hanso: "I don't feel like watching Dancing anymore. Those celebs suck. You can watch Terminator and Chuck." Hanso: "Are you sure?" Mrs.Hanso: "Yes I'm sure and don't ask again cause I may change my mind and make you watch Gossip Girl"

Manson's character could be interesting, but her acting is bad. Anyone think it's a possibility that her T-1000 could have been reprogrammed? Is it possible she isn't just another Skynet pawn sent to kill John? Just a thought. I don't think Cameron was being jealous, she was trailing John in her mission to protect. Overall, though, she could be starting to humanize. In T2, Arnie's 600 Series (?) tells John that the more time he spends with humans, the more behaviors he picks up and can emulate humans better. Cameron has spent months in the sole company of two humans and had exposure to many more. Riley and neighbor-chick (Busy Phillips) seem like unnecessary additions to the cast. Probably added to keep the show from becoming too much of a sausage fest. They're cute, though. Riley looks like she could be the little sister of Claire from Lost. Finally, I'm getting tired of John whining about wanting to have a life. It's been drilled into his head for 18 years now that he's too important to the future and he has a destiny he has to fulfill. *Every* time he strays from that, he is put in mortal danger. You think he'd catch on.
