There’s a lot wrong with this episode, but what’s right about it makes up the difference and then some. Surprisingly for an action based series, the characters and drama between them made up for the lackluster overall plot. The show-runners have done a good job of picking interesting actors for side characters and the writers have taken good advantage of these actors, possibly to the detriment of the overall story arc. Busy Philips from Freaks and Geeks is a fun addition to the series. She hasn’t had a lot to do yet, but when she is on screen, she does a great job. She is a tool for humanizing a group of people who often have to live as machines themselves in order to defend themselves against attacking Terminators.
Riley, as I previously mentioned, is also an interesting character. Levin Rambin is a great actress for this part and she and Thomas Dekker seem to have some on screen chemistry together. There’s room for discussion about John’s motivations with Riley though. He has seen over and over again what happens to people that get close to he and his mother yet he still continues to bring Riley closer and closer into his inner circle. John will grow up to be a leader and a fighter, but he still maintains a compassionate side, a side of himself he gets from his mother.
Sarah denies her compassionate side where John does not but when the chips are down she will fight to save people, those close to her and those that aren’t. She finds herself sneaking away from John to save her ex-husband and his new wife. The fact that she doesn’t involve John is fantastic because as I’ve said before this show should be focused on Sarah protecting John and fighting the Terminators. She wants to do the right thing but she leaves John at home in hopes of not putting John’s life at risk. At the same time, doesn’t any plan that Cromartie comes up with involve killing John? Shouldn’t she have expected it from the beginning?
Speaking of Cromartie, seeing him utilize something as old school as a mousetrap was fantastic but his explanation of it was way too human. His dialogue is creepy in a murderer sort of way not in an emotionless machine way. This is just another humanizing misstep for the series like all of the others previously mentioned in these reviews. Also, why would he leap into the water if he knows that he can’t swim? This scene was fairly ridiculous and annoying. Speaking of humanizing, the jealousy issues with Cameron have to stop. It just doesn’t fit, she’s a robot. She does do her job in this episode and the scene where Riley spots her is amusing.
Not much happened this week and characters seemed to make dumb mistakes in a few spots that didn’t fit their characters but overall, the characters all had interesting scenes and they were all compelling. Other shows (True Blood, cough, cough) feature poor actors for secondary characters and uninteresting side stories – not the case with Sarah Connor Chronicles, at least so far. The death at the end of the episode was sad and the funeral scene displayed the blatant differences between humans and Terminators but we knew this actress had to go; she has another show to do.
Do you like this series? If so, then you need to get three friends to watch, and they need to get three friends to watch and so forth. The ratings have dropped substantially since last season, so if you want to see the show continue, get out there and get your friends watching and chatting about it on the interwebs.
