Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: Pilot

Review Date: Tuesday, January 15, 2008

I didn’t watch the early broadcast of this pilot so I saw it Sunday night for the first time. I’ve been excited for it because I believe there is potential for a great series within this mythology. My reaction to this series is mixed but hopeful. First things first, this series appears to contradict the mythology set up by the first two films quite a bit. That ticked me off but I had to let it go and try to enjoy the series on its own. There were plenty of nods at those films though, such as the fake last name “Reese” (John’s father’s name) and Glau’s character name of Cameron (director James Cameron).

So, the show is set between T2 and T3 and it picks up with Sarah and her son John settled in a small town with fake identities. A man that Sarah has been with over the last two years proposes to her right after she ahs a nightmare about a Terminator tracking them down. She waits for the man to head to work and she packs John up and they move to another small town where John starts school. At school he meets Cameron (Glau) who ends up protecting him from a Terminator attack. As if we didn’t already know from all the press, Cameron is a Terminator herself sent back John to protect his mother and his younger self. When John, Cameron, and Sarah go on the run John demands that they find out who has restarted the SkyNet program and stop them rather than just keep running. Cameron, who doesn’t seem nearly as determined to just protect John as she should be, agrees to help them and builds a time machine so they can move ahead from 1999 to 2007 and begin the investigation as well as run from the law and the Terminators. There’s also an FBI agent chasing Sarah and her boyfriend too. It seems like we’ll see these characters re-occurring as they chase Sarah and crew from small town to small town.

Right off the saving grace of this series is Lena Heady and Summer Glau. They both have great charisma and they do good jobs with their parts. I’m conflicted about Heady though. When I think of Sarah Connor, especially post T2, I think of an extremely muscular “tough as nails” Mom who cares nothing for her looks, who is focused on her job. Lena is a great actress but she’s extremely thin and not tough looking at all. Plus, she’s mostly dressed like a soccer mom with a messy hip hair cut. Now, you could make the argument that her soccer mom appearance is a cover, an attempt to become invisible and I can go with that and say that’s why I still liked her in the episode. Her extremely thin appearance doesn’t mesh with a woman who could do a one handed pull up though. Glau is the go to girl for a cute girl in sci-fi and she shows why in this episode. I’m not excited about where it feels like her character may be going though. I expected an upgraded Terminator model and she is an upgrade but in a less than interesting way. Her upgrade appears to be that she is the most human of all the Terminators even able to eat potato chips. What I don’t like is what feels like the potential for a formulaic and predictable romantic relationship with John. Didn’t we already get a robot that tries to be human with Data from Star Trek: The Next Generation? She does a great job with the action scenes so I really hope I’m wrong with her character arc. John and the evil Terminator are completely uninteresting on screen though. Arnold is well Arnold but he has way more charisma than this guy. I’d love to see him get destroyed and replaced with a better actor. Dekker, well we’re stuck with him so I have to just hope he gets better. Finally, I have to register a complaint about the special effects. They were pretty low budget for a series from a major network. If the series takes off maybe they’ll get more money for future episodes.

It wasn’t the A+ kick off of a new series that I was hoping for, but it’s solid enough that I’m happy to stick with it. It is the pilot and they creators have a chance to feel their way around and improve the series and I hope it does just improve. Hell, it’s better than Bionic Woman and we actually are getting episodes! Terminator purists beware….

Mostly agreeing with the review.

Summer and Lena are basically make me want to keep watching . . . otherwise it feels like a decent late 80's / early 90's action tv show on Fox.

I seemed to have liked it a bit more than you did but I agree with most of what you said, I disagree with the F/X no worse than anything I have seen on BSG. As far as a romantic relationship between John and Cameron never thought of that and I really hope that is not the case.
This show is no BSG or Lost but it has the potential to be as good if they develop the story properly. Meeting Kyle Reese as a kid or teenager may be in the cards for future episodes. And as of the second episode I have to say that Glau is gonna eat this role up. And as for Dekker not sure what you were expecting from him its not like furlong was an interesting character in T2 either, I think he is playing John exactly as he should be played at his age.
Oh and please don't ever mention Bionic Woman in anymore reviews about this series, I see the relation (cyborgs) but this show is already 10x better than that tripe. ;)

The show is off to a great start so far. I get the impression that Cameron might be modeled after a future love interest of John's.

I wasn't expecting much so I was pleasantly surprised.

SPOILERS - BEWARE!
I thought the first episode was pretty good while the second episode slowed down a lot while explaining continuity within the T2-T3 time line and setting up season arcs.
What I learned:
1) Sarah Connor still will die (or believes she will die) as fore-told by the hottie Terminator. They jumped into the future so she doesn't have to die fast. Inn fact they could stay in the future into the war if needed with this fix. Also, there are a myriad of ways to "unkill" Sarah if they choose (send back a duplicate & push Sarah into the future (or past, say 1965?) for example and thus open the door to further Sarah adventures). They are finding ways to fill the continuity gaps. I like this. There is nothing worse than continuity holes.
2) I't looks like the FBI agent is the same model as Cameron as he eats and drinks as well. I liked that she (and probably he) have been in the past since the 60's (or perhaps earlier by the story told by Cameron). I am wondering if perhaps the Terminators were sent in the past to protect Sarah Connor's mother (so she could birth Sarah) or even to protect Kyle Reese's folks? The number of stories that could derive from that alone is huge.
3) Wow, hot Terminator. I hate to say this but this is a fan boy's wet dream. A hot robot that has to follow your instructions (and what is John now 15, 16, 17? Go go gadget Hormones).
4) The multiple terminators so they can rebuild each other and/or build new terminators. This allows for a lot of enemies but likely too many enemies. With this and a bunch of other soldiers having been sent back in time I count 8 beings already having been sent back into time, 4 terminators and 4 soldiers. This can get ugly as the future war is being battled through the past. We have now seen or heard of Terminators in the 60's (and technically the 70's as a result), the 80's, 90's and 2000's so far. The concept will stretch thin the more they do this (example, Marvel shot themselves in the foot in the 90's in comic form by literally adding millions of mutants, thus diluting their X-men who were maybe a few dozen guppies in the ocean, eventually they had to retcon their way out).
5) Speaking of continuity. One of the holes now fixed is that John's age always seemed off in the movies. A lot of fans didn't like that, well that is now fixed by adding the time travel arc. He can age and then when he goes back in time he will be the correct age. Odd, I know, but it is a fix.
6) Hopefully there will be no Arnie cameo in this series. The only Arnie in T3 should have in the deleted scene on the disc where we find out why the Terminator looked like Arnie and how he got the accent, pure genius, should have been kept.
All in all, I give the show a solid B+. It has lots of potential I must say. I haven't been this excited for a show since the Blade series, and that, well, no pun intended, sucked.

The pilot was cheap looking and so-so until they got to the bank robbery scene...which turned into a major twist. From that moment on, the last 15 minutes or so, was alot of fun and engaging as it played with the time war aspects of things, evolving the many possibilities of the saga while showing us what the time traveling soldiers are capable of doing...as well as the kinds of strategies they can employ against their enemies, past, present or future.

And don't forget about one of the major continuity moments: what happens to their clothes during time travel. I was hoping to high heaven they would disappear like they were supposed to.

Heady is perfect for this. Linda Hamilton was scrawny, even though she could do pull-ups with one hand. And they so far are making Heady seem scrawny and kind of weather-worn just like Hamilton was.

2 good points Boom. The idea of a Terminator being sent back to when Sarah Conner was a little girl or before to make sure she grew up to have John is a great story idea. I hope they do go somewhere with that kind of thing, especially since, you know, the show is called the Sarah Conner Chronicles. And I also thought about Cameron may have possibly been a love-interest of John's that was possibly killed or since he knew he would take to her looks anyway and make it easier for him to get used to her, make her look like someone he fell in love with.

Now that I've seen the first 2 episodes I feel I can say I enjoyed what I saw. It doesn't totally ignore T:3 as many online soothsayers were preaching. The inclusion of Sarah's cancer proves that, even if that is the only element brought over. Including that gives the show just that much more credibility for me.

I will watch this as a "mirror-nator" universe(trek reference) to the movie saga. Since we all know come April Christian Bale starts filming T:4 which does fully follow the events of T:3.

I'm curious to know what model # Cameron is, the bad Terminators sensors didn't recognize her model. She herself didn't reveal it when Sarah asked her. Whats going on there?

Will the widow Ms.Dyson have a future in the series? Her IMDB profile has her in a few more episodes.

Should the series last will time jumping become a semi-used device? More nude Summer Gleau and Leany Heady is a sure crowd pleaser!

Its first two episodes are much more promising than the first two of Bionic Woman. Which by the way has official fate on BW came down?

bjjdenver • Jan 15, 2008, 09:37am •
captaincraig, I also am curious as to the fate of BW and other new shows, not to mention others on the fence. I'm afraid that may be the biggest by product of the strike, shows not making it or never getting the chance to run their course. Scrubs final season is gone to crap now and new shows like BW that needed tweaking, may never get the chance. I could see the landscape of sjows taking a few years to get back on track.

Anyhow, T:TSCC was a surprise for me. I waited to see it broadcast and was pleasantly surprised at the show. It seems to fit the Terminator mold well and I'm fine with the effects, terminators and actors playing the roles.

My biggest concern is two-fold. I see this turning into another teen angst drama, with John trying to deal with his normal teen problems, like The OC on steroids, lol. I hope it doesn't to much and stays more focused on the "running" storyline. Kind of on the same token, I see the ex-fiance storyline being another possible melodramatic distraction. I don't mind these to much, i just hope they don't become a major, major part of the show.

And damnit, move it out of 8 o'clock Monday when heroes gets back!

Something else I forgot to mention. Did anyone else happen to notice, and maybe it's just me, that Sarah's ex kind of looks similar to Robert Patrick? I know it's a REALLY far stretch, but everytime he happened on the screen, I thought maybe the machines at some point use his likeness to make the T-1000 model to get close to John in the future or something. Again, it's a really far stretch I know. But interesting thought nonetheless.

Boombatty • Jan 15, 2008, 10:01am •
The whole nude thing never made sense to me as how did the Robert Patricknator make it through? And if clothes and other items like guns can't be brought back then how do they account for other non-biological items like Terminators themselves? If it is because they are covered in flesh and couldn't a Terminator bring a future weapon with him if it were covered in flesh? This is a hole I wish would get explained someday. As for other potential Terminators I am expecting, if this show goes the distance we will eventually see Terminator Dogs or other animals show up. They could cover a car in flesh, send it back and have KITT kill John Connor ;)
