TERMINATOR: THE SARAH CONNOR CHRONICLES: The Tower is Tall but the Fall is Short

Cameron Knows How to Wrap a Gift

Shirley Manson's Catherine Weaver has motherly issues in "Terminator: The Sarah Connor Chronicles: The Tower is Tall but the Fall is Short"
© Fox TV

Catherine Weaver is someone the writers of this series have been dangling in front of fans all season and finally this week a bit of information about her is revealed. Shirley Manson isn’t that great an actress but she really looks the part. If ever thee was someone that looks like a Terminator it’s her. The opening scenes of her photo shoot were extremely humorous. She could move and pose precisely, almost robotic if you will, but she never gets a grasp on a warm smile. Thematically that sums up Weaver’s development in this episode. She’s not exactly successful at the evolution but she does learn that it’s necessary. The parallels of her work with her daughter and her basement project are also quite well portrayed in the episode.

This week also brings back the Sarah Connor narration which utilizes her musings to define the theme of the episode as well as tie the stories together. It would be interesting if she was actually keeping a journal “chronicling” her adventures with John and before him – creating a guide for him to refer to after she is gone. At any rate the narration ties this series to Terminator 2 which featured Sarah Connor narration from Linda Hamilton.

Apparently the bloody wall – which is an extremely ugly crutch for the writers of the series – reveals to the Connor’s, Dekker, and Cameron the name of a psychiatrist that is important to the creation of SkyNet. How do they know what order to approach the information on the wall? Is there a timeline to go along with the information? At any rate Sarah, John, and Cameron go into therapy to plant bugs and check out patient files to try and determine the psychiatrist’s involvement with the future. The scenes of therapy were really great and could work in future episodes of the series even though it’s been done before in The Sopranos and other copy cats.

The way that the psychiatrist is connected to SkyNet is a bit predictable and again been there done that but the trip the episode takes to that end is extremely entertaining. Some close calls with Weaver and John nearly coming into contact were intriguing because they raise more questions about what Weaver’s job is on present day earth. Obviously she is working to create SkyNet but does she not have a secondary goal of killing john Connor? She’s never alluded to that desire so is she just so focused on this one job that for her Connor doesn’t matter? She is interested in finding other terminators though?

A new terminator hits town with a vague job to do. It’s vague because she gets intercepted by Cameron before the job becomes clear. The fight that follows is hilarious. The worst addition to this episode is the appearance of the resistance fighter that had a relationship with Dekker. The whole extra story arc just seemed unnecessary. This episode ends up being extremely exciting because of all the new questions it sets up regarding Weaver and her daughter and of course her big project.

Loved it !. Shirely Manson doesn't have to act. She plays a Evil Robot just fine. I think she's sinister and evil and totaly lifeless just like the T1000. " Perfectly done"<BR itxtvisited="1" />I like the whole story with John being a bit disturbed and If any of you didn't see the 1st episode of this 2nd season then im sorry but I knew he killed that guy. Im glad they finally revealed it to everyone when Sarah went back to the Doctor.<BR itxtvisited="1" />There's so much to explore and im glad they are making this go for a full season.<BR itxtvisited="1" />As for Derrek and his girl. It is relavant totally. She wanted to run - get away from the war and the struggles and wanted Reese to do the same. Stay with her and just ride it out until Judgement Day Comes. Derrek made his choice and plans on staying wth John and Sarah and protecting his future leader. It shows the loyality he has for John. He's a soldier and has his duty.<BR itxtvisited="1" />The whole Suicide angle was interesting too. Did John really forget to clear the weapon? We learn that Derrek tried to off himself in the future so that was rather interesting.

I was glad to see the show get picked up for a full season.  It has gotten consistently stronger as it goes on.  I thought this was another solid entry.

I still agree with hanso, Shirley Manson still sucks balls!    but this was a good episode, I just think they need to be careful with all the extra side plots they keep adding like with Dereks lover AWOL or a traitor or something.  They are going to have a lot of loose ends hanging if this show doesn't get picked up for a 3rd season.

<P itxtvisited="1">You a very wise man Hobbs and mighty correct if I might add! :)</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">2 much Manson for me on this episode so you know I can't give it an A.  I think her acting was worse when she was shown as the real Kathryn on that clip with her husband.</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">And when did Terminators care about others feelings where they seek a shrink for help?  Man that's more crazy that Daphne not being able to move when Hiro froze time in the bar even though the first couple of episodes they made it seems like she's 2 quick for Hiro's power to affect her.  It's even crazier than Hiro jumping back in time even though he said he wouldn't no more.  Sure he can jump back in time to fake kill Ando but he can't jump back to prevent Daphne from stealing the formula?  That's how crazy Terminators seeking shrinks for their kids is!</P> Glad it got picked up for the full season even though it seems once Fox gets something else they will go ahead and cancel it. Maybe the writers need to start working towards a series finale instead of season finale. How can SC have trouble getting picked up but Knight Knighter doesn't? Crazy world. You know how crazy? Crazier than Peter & Sylar running around Level 5 with no guards in sight.

A great episode. I think Shirley Manson is okay. She's not an emmy award actress, I get all that but I think she does okay for what she's supposed to do. I loved what Cameron does to the other Terminator in the elevator. I'm salty that the show is gettin' bumped on Monday again for the World Series, which is cool but damn I gotta wait another 2 weeks!

SgtTechCom 10/22/2008 11:23:14 AM
<P itxtvisited="1">It's funny because you all mock Shirely but other then being a machine how else do you want her to act? She's doing fine with it. I agree she's no emmy winning actress but she's playing a evil -T 1000 very lifeless and with her own agenda. The best was when the woman who was conducting the photo shoot was explaining things about her ex and how she could kill him sometimes and Catherin just nodded in approval with that totally uncaring face. Little things like that are awesome.</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">Christina Loken was terrible in T3 as the Tx. Aside from her looks i don't know how anyone can say she was a great actress either. She looked evil and played the part. Thats enough.</P><BR itxtvisited="1" /><BR itxtvisited="1" /> <P itxtvisited="1">Yeah i hate it that we have to wait another 2 weeks. Altho business is going to pick up with another Cromartie showdown and some other surprises. Im siked and i can't wait to see who gets killed off. Im thinking the FBI agent is going to somehow end up getting killed. Guess we will have to see.</P>

Decent episode...

Stephen, I'm not sure if it's just typos you or not, but it's a little confusing when you said "Dekker and Cameron"  as well as saying the resistance fighter that had a relationship with Dekker.  Dekker is the last name of the actor who plays John.  The new character, resistance fighter, had a relationship with Derek Reese, not Dekker.

LOL hanso! I’m actually enjoying Heroes more this season than last but man they don’t give a rat’s A-Hole about character & story continuity one bit it seems. Last season was hella boring. This season’s action is way better but Mrs. Baloney has said I can’t get upset about the plot and character holes anymore or I have to watch it in the bedroom alone. “Why are you so angry if you’re enjoying this?” If I don’t get a solid and satisfying explanation on why Pete didn’t already have Sylar’s powers after season one before this season is out then I’m done.

But anyway – wicked good news on T: TSCC getting picked up for a full season!!

Manson does still suck balls but Mrs. Baloney has also nixed those complaints. It’s not that she’s playing an emotionless robot. It’s that she looks out of her league with every single actor she shares the screen with. She seems about as comfortable on TV as Richard Nixon did.

John struggling with popping his killing cherry was very interesting.

Derek’s girlfriend could have been integrated into the story a little better but I think she could become very interesting. I agree with SgtTechCom on its relevance. Also clued us in that Derek was suicidal at one point but is now fighting for the future. I’m a little suspicious of his chick. Not entirely convinced she showed up just to go AWOL. Might be a double agent or something.

Hope we get some sort of explanation on what the pretzel Terminator was up to. Wouldn’t killing the psychologist be counter productive to what Manson’s up too? Did she know that John was seeing the shrink? Is it possible that Cameron’s mentioning there were machines looking to make peace with the humans wasn’t just a line to trick Allison from Palmdale?

Who’s gonna bite the dust? Obviously not John, Sarah or Cameron. Hope it ain’t Reese or Ellison. Charlie anyone? Where he been at anyway? Riley or the new mommy maybe?

It's been awhile my friend.  Glad to see you remembering us little folks.

Don't get upset about the Heroes plot & character holes, what we need to do is start a drinking game.  Everytime Peter could've used X power but didn't, take a shot.  Every time a NBC ad says a heroe will die...do 2 shots, Ali Larter playing a new character related to Nikki, take has many shots as personalities.  That way it's even more enjoyable.

It was a good episode and I`m glad that they renewed it for a full season. I hope that they don`t go down that BSG/ Matrix Revolutions road having some terminators wanting peace with the humans. That would be such a cop out. To me ,one side has to win.  I can't remember if there is an actual winner mentioned in the movies. We just know that JC leads the war against Skynet. I think there is a scene showing the victory with JC holding up a flag or something and he has an eye patch. Or I might be making that up. Anyone?

Anyway, the AWOL story should have been made into its own episode instead of thrown into this one. The only relevance was that we know Derek tried to kill himself. My thinking is that she is part of some faction of the resistance that disagrees with John`s future plans. It would be ridiculous to think that every human left alive just decided to follow John's orders. Humans aren't like that. There are always power struggles. I bet they sent her there to get close and then kill John in the past so that they would lead the resistance in the future without him there.
