Cruise and Ritchie for Man from U.N.C.L.E. Remake

Early talks for Series Big Screen Adaptation

The Hollywood reporter has confirmed the news that Guy Ritchie (Sherlock Holmes: Game of Shadows) is directing the big screen adaptation of the 1960’s TV series, Man from U.N.C.L.E.. The Hollywood Reporter also states that Tom Cruise is in early talks to star in the film.

My question to you Maniacs is, do we need Tom Cruise in yet another spy franchise?

The film adaptation has been in the works at Universal for some time with such names as Steven Soderberg, George Clooney, Channing Tatum, Michael Fassbender, and Bradley Cooper at one point being considered. Ben Affleck and Matt Damon were even offered a shot at the franchise.

Sources at Universal state that if Tom Cruise passes on the project Guy Ritchie will have to move on as well.

What was the Man from U.N.C.L.E.? It was created in the 1960s during the Cold War, featured the spy adventures of American agent Napoleon Solo and Soviet agent Illya Kuryakin. The original series featured Robert Vaughn as Napoleon Solo and David McCallum as Illya Kuryakin. The series ran from 1964 to 1968.

Answer to your question: No.

Somebody else needs to star in this franchise. There has got to be two of those stars who will do this. Cruise is the Impossible Mission Master that is all the spying he needs. He does it very well. If Jack Reacher had worked that would also be a fine franchise as well. But I'd rather not have the same star who owns a McDonald's franchise to own the Burger King next door. Get a PeiWei instead.

I'd really be interested to see who would be cast as Illya.  One of the jewels of the show was the chemistry between the leads.  There was also a certain amount of humor in the show... which after seeing Knight & Day, I think Cruise could pull off rather nicely.

Oh hell, I just want to see Tom taking out a pen and saying, "Open channel D"

Does Tom Cruise get first pass at every script out there?

I like Cruise, he's a good actor, but he's done the MIs, he's done Jack, he's done Knight and Day, he's starting to get typecast as the cool super-spy.  Find someone else.

The Solo character needs to be cool as a cucumber and someone the ladies will desire. I'd go younger. Not being a lady, I haven't a clue. However, I agree...Cruise in another spy role seems like overkill.

There's an episode of NCIS (which co-stars David McCallum) where one of the younger agents asks Mark Harmon's Agent Gibbs what McCallum's character (Dr. "Ducky" Mallard) looked like when he was young. Gibbs' answer: "Ilya Kuryakin". Priceless.

Can't have two movies based on two classic spy series from the 60s with the same star.  It just doesn't make sense from any perspective.  Arguably, Cruise makes more sense starring in Man From UNCLE than Mission Impossible, but what is done is done.

No, no, no...ANYONE other than Tom Cruise...I was a HUGE Man from U.N.C.L.E. fan when it was on TV.  I just don't see him in the Napoleon Solo role.  I thought about Daniel Craig for the Illya Kuryakin role but he is (unfortunately) James Bond...I still think Pierce was good in that role.

i like cruise, i don't have a problem with the idea. He's good at playing a spy. And that's what this is about who can play a betrer spy than cruise? Sure there are others just like there was others  better than C.B as batman but we still got stuck with that turd joke of a batman. it is what it is, ...

I'm going to be honest.

Some indeterminate time between "now" and  "whenever," I'm going to die. No big thing, one to a customer.

But it does mean that I won't waste my time reading this article, due to the mystic curse phrase contained within it.

'Tom Cruise.'

Trust me, you put that arseclown in it, I won't watch it.

Winston Churchill:  "Never.  Never, never. Never, never."

Tom-fruitin'-Cruise?

Give you good odds, whoever the new Ilya is, has about enough of limp, pretentious crap - and puts a blank round from an U.N.C.L.E. pistol in the side of his empty skull.

Bet all he gets from the grand jury is a true no bill, and fined for public littering. . .

'Cause somebody on that grand jury used to watch the show as a child.

but WILL SMITH and his son would be SOOOO perfect for the roles. and they definitely have to be both GAY for this remake to work. i mean look at how great the remakes of WILD WILD WEST and I SPY were.
