Mania Reviews and your turn at the plate

(Thu 05/22/2008 09:55pm)

Hey Maniacs, the movielord here.  Some of you know and some of you don't know but I am on staff as a columnist for Mania.  I wanted to talk to you guys and gals about the reviews and your comparisons of the summer films (thus far).  I love that you get excited and are passionate about movies (me too).  That is what brought me to this site to begin with.  However, lately your comments on the site about what we rate films is mind blowing to me.  It all started with Iron Man getting a B VS. Indiana Jones getting an A-.  First take a look at the columnists for each review, they are two different people.  Two different opinions.  Maybe Abbie loathed Indiana Jones.  Maybe Scott hated Iron Man.  These reviews are just their opinions.  If you have an opinion, write your own review.  Get your voice heard (read).  That is the best part about belonging to this community.  You can post your own review!  A comment on page 3, four lines down will not be read by as many people as your own review.  You think Iron Man was an A+ let me read about it.  Posting things like "Iron Man gets a B and Indy an A-, boy this site is going down hill" is laughable and silly.

Plus do you guys think we sit around in a bull pen and say what do you think of Indy?  Was it better than Iron Man?  Scott give it this grade.  No.  Plus do you think we should rate Indy in comparison to all Indy's or just what has come out this summer or just as a movie in general?  Abbie and Scott are great writers.  They gave fair honest reviews and I stand by both of them.   You disagree?  Write a review.  It's your turn at the plate and Mania gives you the chance to take a swing.

In this corner...

Coming in at "44 Bangs": You know him, he secretly disturbs you and you love him for it!  Our own resident "Joker",  michaelxaviermaelstrom (echoing again) michaelxaviermaelstrom!!!

His opponent... with "41 Bangs": Hailing from regions unknown... his face is unkown... a man who probably has more long boxes than 12 of us combined (apparently mostly DC comics)... back from his hitaus... (pause) Merin, yes you heard me right, MERIN!

Their battle?  Well, the third most banged on Mania...

The prize?  First bitch slap rights at the San Diego Comic Con!

The end of Lost?

(Mon 01/07/2008 09:36pm)
If the strike continues will this mark the end of LOST?

Talking at the water cooler today, a few of us were chatting about some of our favorite shows: ‘Jericho’ (starts Feb 12th by the way), ‘Battlestar Galactica’ (April 4th) and ‘LOST’ (January 31st). The conversations lead to where the stories will go, who has seen the trailers for the new season and most importantly how many episodes do they have filmed/ finished. Apparently ‘LOST’ only has 8 episodes filmed (according to Entertainment Weekly). Now there are many of us that understand what the writers are going through and we sympathize. However, there is a large hunk of America that simply couldn’t give a shit about a writer getting his rightly deserved royalties. So when those 8 episodes are over does anyone besides me think there will be a back lash? After all the whole reason why they started filming later was to fulfill a promise that the season would run continuously. As of now that doesn’t look like it will happen. Do you think the masses will turn against ‘LOST’ once they don’t get their ninth episode on the ninth week?

5 last minute gift ideas...

(Fri 12/21/2007 08:12pm)

Here are 5 last minute gift ideas for the Maniac friend who has everything.

While walking through the stores thinking about some last minute gift ideas for my friends, I suddenly thought, "what don’t they have already?"  What are they already getting? How can I give a great gift, have it be original, not a duplicate and be both something they want and love? Then I thought something, wait... will it actually be in the stores to buy?

So here are 5 itmes that have a 90 to 100% chance of being in the stores up till December 24th.

1. 'Man from Earth'

The tale of a man who reveals to his friends, on the night he is leaving, that he is actually walked the Earth for 14 centuries.

The Movie Lord's reason why to give this as a gift: I caught this film (because of Tim Janson's review) and it blew me away. It is probably the greatest campfire story I have ever heard/ seen. A true work of science fiction from Star Trek scribe, Jerome Bixby.

2. The Walking Dead Book 1 (Walking Dead) (Hardcover)

The Movie Lord's reason why to give a gift: Did you ever wonder what happened to the survivors after the Zombie movie? What was life like in a post Zombie waste land? These books (trade or hardcover) are twisted dark fun storytelling that really illustrates man in his true nature when society breaks down. Perfect read for the cold winter nights ahead (especially with no new TV on the horizon).

3. Watchmen (Paperback)

All right what Maniac buddy doesn't have this book? With the movie coming out in over a year here is your chance to get the uninitiated to read Moore's classic. Perfect for the uncle you got in your family's secret Santa gift exchange. Moore's book redefined comics and is still a classic (hopefully the movie won't tarnish it), besides what gift is better than a classic? You'll have to explain why you gave him a comic, but if anything you'll have something to talk about as the little ones open up their toys. You could drop some extra coin and get him the hard cover.

4. 'Hatchet' (Unrated Director's Cut) (2006)

The Movie Lord's reason why to give this as a gift: You will find ‘Hatchet’ to be so ridiculously violent that you'll love it like you did when you saw 'The Evil Dead' for the first time. The film does have a few flaws but pick it up, bring over some beer and send the girls out so you can sit back with you buddy and relieve how much fun it was to laugh at some crazy horror movie. It just came out in the stores and horror movies usually aren't on non-Maniacs Christmas Lists.  It should be easy to find.

5. Stupid plastic toy and gold spray paint.

All right, already I can hear you saying (typing) "what ?". Buy a cheap bobble head or a something fancy like a Star Wars Unleashed figure and spray paint it gold. Invite as many friends over that love to play 3rd person or 1st person mulitplayer shooter games. Create a bracket and fight your friends to see who wins the stupid gold colored trophy. Sounds idiotic? Sounds like a pretty good idea! Every year I get together with Pennsylvania Owens, Captain Krick, the Hurricane Kid (amongst others) and have a ridiculous night of what we call THROWDOWN! We choose a game, play an hour of warm ups (for those that don't know how to play that particular game) and then we THROWDOWN!  It never disappoints.

Hope this tiny list of items helped. Enjoy your holidays and I'll see you in the new year.
