They Don't Know They're Watching Comics!
(Sat 03/10/2007 01:34am)
So after a good night of television I am berated the next day with questions like “What did you think of last night episodes? What do you think that meant?” I am my jobs go to guy for TV shows. The usual complaint this season is why there are only so many episodes or why is there break? It’s fun to see people so caught up in show. Much like how many comic book readers I know who love getting their books on a Wednesday to only be frustrated as hell to get to the end of a book and know they have to wait another month to find out what happens next. So I started to take notice that TV shows are becoming more episodic in nature. You have to tune in each week to follow along. You just can’t jump in and watch “Heroes” or “LOST” and understand what is going on, it’s not possible unless you go and watch reruns or an entire season on DVD. Much like jumping into what’s going on with the Avengers and or why Captain America was killed. You can catch up if you get the trade paper backs that I am sure Marvel will be putting out any Wednesday now.
I like TV in its episodic form. It’s a digital comic every week. I am not turning the pages but I am tuning in every week. I also like the fact that people don’t realize that comics made shows like “Heroes”, “Battlestar Galacitca”, “LOST” and “Jericho” possible. They are after all: The X-Men, The Avengers, 52, and Y: The Last Man. So when I get mocked for reading about the adventures of Spider-Man or the Hulk on my lunch break, I just remind people that they are watching comics every week. There really isn’t any difference anymore.
