Feast (2005) a horror movie that was produced by Ben Affleck and Matt Damon for their Project Greenlight TV show. It was a reality show that had people send in scripts and directing samples that would be judged and the winners would get there script made and have a chance to direct film. Affleck and Damon went with a horror film this time because there last two attempts at Project Greenlight did not yield any kind of financial success.
Those films are: Stolen Summer (2002) and The Battle of Shaker Heights (2003).
The actual story of Feast (the movie not the making of) is about a seedy bar in the rurals of Texas that is attacked by a family of inhumane monsters. The patrons of the bar band together in the hopes of escaping.
Nothing really new here, the premise alone is ripped right from Night of the Living Dead (1968), people have to come together to survive an onslaught from the unknown. The movie is fast paced with quick cuts and a whirlwind of characters. The director, John Gulager, gives you quick freeze frames of each character so you get a quick idea of who is who. The nice touch is how long they will be expected to live. The story could have done with out a few extras characters but then again this is supposed to be a blood bath… so you need lots of people to get killed. My head did spin at the beginning trying to catch everyone’s name and info and after awhile I decided to just go with it.
The creatures are scary and defiantly different. Gulager goes with the less is more and only gives us a taste of the creatures. However Gulager gives us a great deal more of something else… and that is humor. Gulager knows what this kind of movie is supposed to be. A good scare and a good laugh equal a good time. This is an ideal horror movie and Feast accomplishes this. I really enjoyed myself watching this film. I just wish it would have played near me and I could have seen it for the first time on the big screen with an audience.
It is fun and scary and all the things good horror should be.
