Slither (2006) directed by James Gunn and starring Elizabeth Banks and Firefly’s very own Nathan Fillion.
Slither is the story about a meteor from another world that lands on Earth and infects an adulterous husband, Michael Rooker, who slowly turns into an alien slug type thing. He starts to infect the whole town. The town’s Sherriff, played by Fillion, tries to make sense of what is happening and save the town and his old girlfriend who is now married to the slug monster played by Elizabeth Banks.
This was an interesting movie. Though at times I thought I had seen a lot of it before. There we pieces of Invasion of the Body Snatchers (1978), The Thing (1982), and The Blob (1988). So it doesn’t have any real originality to it. What I did enjoy was the humor at the various situations. Fillion and the supporting cast bring a reality to each situation and make you believe these absurd situations. So this cast of people you recognize but don’t really know their names is top notch given the material. After al this movie is supposed to be fun and they made it so.
Would I ever watch it again? No. The plot was tired and many of the situations I had seen in older movies or they added more gore to make them shocking and disturbing. All I saw in those scenes was money being spent which could have been used to improve the over all story.
Top notch dialogue, top notch humor, third rate story.
