The early rumors from Bloody-Disgusting that Matthijs van Heijningen will direct a prequel to John Carpenter's The Thing are true. Variety has confirmed Matthijs as the director who will be adapting a screenplay from "Battlestar Galactica" executive producer Ronald D. Moore. Strike Entertainment's Eric Newman and Marc Abraham are producing while David Foster will be executive producer.

The new project borrows heavily from the John W. Campbell Jr. short story "Who Goes There," the basis of the Carpenter film and 1951 Howard Hawks original The Thing From Another World.

Plot Concept: It is set in a Norwegian camp and chronicles how the alien was first discovered and overcame the inhabitants of that camp.

At first I wasn't too into this because we know the outcome and how the creature moves on to the American camp. Still just like the Lycans it isn't wether or not you know the story it's how the story is told.

I'm really looking forward to this now but would've still rathered they made a straight up sequel. Anyway as long as they don't rely too much on cgi I think it'll be fine. Unless cgi has improved dramatically that is.

This could be worth watching, because it isn't really a remake, and even though we know how the story ends, it would be interesting to get it from the original point of origin....of course this being Hollywood and and all, the remake to The Thing would be forthcoming....

Sorry without Kurt Russel this will be - DTV no interest what so ever. Roughly the story was already told by Carpenters Thing. We know what happens simply by whats explained. Of course the space craft came down from outerspace. Of course it had the alien life form inside. Of course it wiped out the entire Norwegian Camp. Done end of story. lol

I'm in but as far as I'm concerned the pressure is on. Some of the most recent sci-fi efforts have fallen short either critically (Babylon A.D.) or at the box office. Sci-Fi needs a major hit.

There have been some good ones out there like Children of Men, but nothing that really brought in the mainstream. Obviously I don't really consider the comic book adaptations as sci-fi (although some meet the definition, Iron Man).

Of course one could easily argue that The Thing is a horror movie and they'd be correct. I guess I should just come clean and again state that I'd really like to see resurgence in decent sci-fi movies.

I may get blasted for this but I am beginning to wonder just how many comic books can be made into movies without seeming formulaic.

Sgt: If they somehow were to put Kurt Russel's character in this movie (except at the very end when the dog runs into his camp) that would suck!  His character didn't meet or know about the alien until everybody else in the US camp did.

I like the premise of seeing how the Norwegian camp delt with the alien and how they found the spaceship. I will look for the short story that was mentioned for a quick read.

Agree with Sgt--enough was done with this premise in the first movie. An explanation of the events before "The Thing" in full movie form is so completely unnecessary. Plus it won't have that authentic 80s vibe!

I'm with Wiseguy. It's not just the story but the execution of it that makes the difference. Like the classic "Boy meets Girl, Boy loses Girl, Boy gets Girl" type of movie, you intellectually know what's going to happen but if the filmmaker is good enough in his craft he will pull you into a trance and you will feel the thrills, loves, and sadness of the characters. In most action or superhero movies you know the good guy will be triumphant but if you're deep into it, it becomes a great thrill ride.

Dartter 1/29/2009 11:55:22 AM

I'm with TechCom execution doesn't matter in this case because it was already implied in the first film which means that whole part of the story is left to audiences imagination. I mean that story is already told through the events of the first (Hawks and Carpenters) film. They should've just done a sequal. This is gonna suck.

Im actually interested in this project. Ever since I saw the first one I've wonderd what the thing's original form was when it was taken out of the ship. Also, maybe they will explain why the ship was on fire in the opening title sequence before it crashed. Perhaps the thing was an alien fugitive that got shot down by galagtic police?

I rather see this guy come up with something new and original cause I think he has the talent to do that.
