Universal Pictures has rolled out the first teaser trailer for The Thing courtesy of MSN Movies. Check it out in the video player below and sound off with your thoughts. Described as a prelude to John Carpenter's classic remake, the film stars Mary Elizabeth Winstead, Joel Edgerton, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje and Jonathan Lloyd Walker. Helmer Matthijs van Heijningen led from the director's chair, based on a screenplay by Ronald D. Moore and Eric Heisserer.

Plot Concept: Antarctica: an extraordinary continent of awesome beauty. It is also home to an isolated outpost where a discovery full of scientific possibility becomes a mission of survival when an alien is unearthed by a crew of international scientists. The shape-shifting creature, accidentally unleashed at this marooned colony, has the ability to turn itself into a perfect replica of any living being. It can look just like you or me, but inside, it remains inhuman. In the thriller "The Thing," paranoia spreads like an epidemic among a group of researchers as they're infected, one by one, by a mystery from another planet.

Paleontologist Kate Lloyd (Mary Elizabeth Winstead) has traveled to the desolate region for the expedition of her lifetime. Joining a Norwegian scientific team that has stumbled across an extraterrestrial ship buried in the ice, she discovers an organism that seems to have died in the crash eons ago. But it is about to wake up.

When a simple experiment frees the alien from its frozen prison, Kate must join the crew's pilot, Carter (Joel Edgerton), to keep it from killing them off one at a time. And in this vast, intense land, a parasite that can mimic anything it touches will pit human against human as it tries to survive and flourish.

The Thing invades theaters October 14, 2011.

Not bad and not to be sexist but I think they should've kept the main character male.  Kurt Russell was a strong leader in the original but it sorta throws it off with a strong female lead.

Don't like the looks of this. Was expecting something more gritty and darker. Preview looks like it will be a generic remake / prequel. However I did like the soundtrack.

If that alien had half a brain it would assimilate Mary Elizabeth Winstead first and use her to seduce the rest of the camp. Adios muchachos, and bye bye earth. The John Carpenter movie was a classic so fairly or not It's going to be difficult not to compare and contrast the 2 films even though this one is a prequel.

I wasn't blown away by the trailer but honestly the real strength of Carpenters version wasn't the action sequences but the paranoia the characters fell victim to. I'm very interested to see how Ronald D. Moore ends up tackling that aspect specifically. Another cause for concern is Matthijs van Heijningen Jr, who is essentially a first time director.

On a positive note i've always admired Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje's performances in both Lost & Oz. Joel Edgerton is one of thoughs guys that has flown under the radar for quite awhile. I first noticed him in Star Wars. He was good in Ned Kelly, King Arthur, and great even though I didn't realize it was him at the time as Hugo in Smokin' Aces.

I'm rooting for this movie, though I just don't think it can live up to his predecessor.

So far it looks pretty good to me, but its hard to tell. Based on this I would give it a shot. We'll see how the next trailers look.

I wonder if Kurt Rusel will make a cameo at the end as Mcready?

Well, first off thank goodness that it's R-rated. Too many times when they remake movies these days, they drop the rating to PG-13.  Secondly, I am digging the trailer. It has the right amount of suspense and darkness to it. I wouldn't say that the original was "gritty". It was defintiely dark and the trailer captures the same essence.

Looks better than expected, but I was hoping for it to be a bit dirtier.

Sorry, but after seeing this trailer I certainly am NOT excited about this so-called "prequel". Looks like they're going for the over-used CGI FX for the creature(s), and it looks too modern to be a prequel. I don't like the idea of a female lead (sorry ladies), because that doesn't jive with JC's version and is what gave his version such a powerful punch! I need to see more, but so far I'm not impressed. I think I'll watch JC's version this weekend!

I agree pony, thank goodness it's rated R but I wasn't blown away by the trailer.  It didn't suck but something was missing.  Maybe it's a male part as the lead but don't know for sure.  That's Ron Moore's influence if that is the case.  He likes the strong female leads so I'm not surprised he put that in his script.  I also noticed that's not the same helo as in the beginning of the 82 Thing.

I'll still see it, I enjoyed the 50's movie, 82, vid game, and hopefully this one.

Eagle, how the heck can you tell they have over used CGI for the creature based off that clip?  It sounds to me like you have a chip on your shoulder about this movie even before the trailer.

Looks identical to John Carpenters The Thing accept with Different Characters. I don't feel a prequal i feel just a flat out remake.

The female lead isn't the problem i like her as an actor -  Scott Pilgrim Saves The World chick hehe cute.
