Just a day after Disney announced its intention to push back the release of the next Pixar movie, CARS, from November 2005 to June 2006, DreamWorks has done the same for SHREK 3. The animation division of the movie studio has announced that it will shuffle back the release of the second sequel to its green ogre franchise from November '06 to a new date sometime in May 2007. But why the move?
"We believe there are more than a half a dozen strong release windows available annually for our films," said DreamWorks Animation CEO Jeffrey Katzenberg in a company press release. "We look at each film very specifically to determine which of these release windows will best maximize its value in the marketplace based on a number of factors, including its story, the competitive landscape and the overall market potential." Reading between the lines in Katzenberg's statement, that means the company stands to make more dough by releasing SHREK 3 during the summer, then coming out with the DVD sometime closer to the holiday season. Mike Myers' ogre isn't the only guy seeing green here.
After making the announcement, shares of DreamWorks Animation dipped 6% in today's trading.
