THUNDERCATS Grabs a Director

First order of business is to clarify something about this THUNDERCATS movie. Contrary to some previous reports, this adaptation of the popular 80's toon will in fact be a CG-animated film. Not a live action film. Variety is also reporting that Jerry O'Flaherty-- a video game vet who worked on Gears of War, Unreal Tournament 3 & Command and Conquer-- will be making his directorial debut for Warner Bros in this big screen adaptation. O'Flaherty will work alongside screenwriter Paul Sopocy in fleshing out the script for this CG story while Paula Weinstein, Dick Robertson and Lew Korman are set to produce.

Plot Concept: This film will expand on the major heroes and villains from the animated series with the plot focusing on Lion-O coming of age as the leader of the Thundercats. The property itself revolves around a group of humanoid cats who must flee the planet of Thundera, which is destroyed. Once crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer bent on killing them off.

BATTLE OF THE PLANETS, ROBOTECH and STARBLAZERS better be relased before this shit comes out.

LMAO!

I agree with you on ROBOTECH.
Battle of the Planets, not so sure. I don't know if that will translate well into live action.

Whew! I'm glad this is going to be CGI. I can't imagine the live action costumes looking very good for this, the cheese factor would be immense.

Actually I take that back about Battle of the Planets.
I don't think it would translate well here in the US, but I could definitely see it being done by TOHO, the Japanese film company, that created Godzilla.

Is this a start from scratch or after the series? Either way is fine but it would not be too hard to start from series ending. And they could muster some DVD sales.

Dazzler... I'm turning 30 in less than 6 months. Thundercats were huge when I was in 2nd and 3rd grade. To my knowledge there has been no real effort to keep them at "top of mind awareness" like the various incarnations of the Transformers. To start from the end of the series would pretty much eliminate a huge audience that was never introduced to the show.

I wonder if they'll get a lot of the old voice actors to come back for the movie.

sounds like they are trying to do the samething as "TMNT". Give it a fresh new updated look, keep the original fans happy, and introduce it to the newer generations.

Mckraken- Battle of the Planets should be out before Thundercats, its been in production for a few months already. They are going to be using the original name though, Gatchaman.

Robotech probably wont be out till 2010, Tobey Maguire only made the announcement that he wanted to make this last month. And im guessing it will be live action/CG, not full CG like the other 2 movies.

Hopefully this wont turn out to be ThunderPigs.
