Paul Sopocy's screenplay for a big screen version of THUNDERCATS has been optioned by Warner Bros.

The 1980's animated series, which the script is based on, centers on a group of humanoid cats (with feline names like Lion-O, Tygra, Panthro and Cheetara) who must flee their planet of Thundera after it's destroyed. Once crash-landing on another planet, Third Earth, they must thwart Mumm-Ra, an evil sorcerer, bent on killing them off. Sopocy has made his screenplay more of an origin story, which expands on the the major heroes and villains from the series.

Paula Weinstein, Dick Robertson and Lew Korman will produce.

Now this is just taking the recent cartoon to live action film craze...too far!!! Thunder Cats sucks!!!

I agree....studios are running out of ideas....

It's not like they're making a Silverhawks movie.

Still, a Bionic 6 movie would kick ass!

Someone on aintitcoolnews.com suggested Silver Hawks...and you can bet, some idiot in Hollywood is planning to make Silver Hawks into a movie...just like Joel Silver with He-Man!!! What's next, She-Ra???!!!

I don't get it...when you have great material like Gundam, Robotech, Star Blazers/Yamato, Akira, and G-Force/Battle Of The Planets...that they could do instead!!! These great anime would all make great movies with the right directors and producers in place!!!

He-Man movie = cool.

Thundercats movie = not so cool.

Metalwater, a She-Ra movie would indeed be cool, but I'd rather they introduce her and Hordak into a Masters of the Universe sequel rather then her own movie.

uhhhh, I'm kinda shocked, while I'm not a huge fan of this project, I could of sworn there were more posters who would love this.... These guys will look hilarious in live action...

Mad, Thundercats was a great toon for its time. I watched it all the time growing up. Is this a good idea? No! It will most likely look kind of cheesy. Although, I could see Mum-Ra looking badass.
And Metalwater doesn`t like much. He can`t even get behind a Transformers movie.
I agree with one thing though, they really, seriously need to think about making a Robotech movie. They have the technology, just based on Transformers to make a kickass Veratech Fighter. Granted the whole Robotech story is kind outdated, it being part BSG and part WOTW. It would still kick some serious ass!

Don't worry, ponyboy - if Transformers is a success, I'm sure we'll see a Robotech project get the greenlight. Along with GoBots. And possibly Rock'em Sock'em Robots.

I'm excited for this. There were only a couple cartoons that I really enjoyed growing up and this is one of them. I am looking forward to this and hopefully it is done right.

And Mum-Ra would definitely could look bad ass on the big screen.

The problem with all these 80's cartoons, and toy lines, being made into live action films is--that many of the projects Hollywood is picking, suck!!! The net effect??? You can bet that quite a large number of these films will bomb at the box office thanks to the sheer glut of them...and the lack of quality of the original material that they are based on. When that happens, the Hollywood suits will blame genre projects as a whole. They'll say audiences aren't interested anymore...that its a cyclical thing, and that you can't properly sample public interest...or how to treat these kinds of properties, using Fan Boys as a gadge...because they are just like Mikie...they'll eat anything!!! And when that occurs, we will see less, and less, of these projects being made...both the good, and the bad.

Shows that should be made into feature films like Captain Harlock (Han Solo with his very own pirate battleship and crew...if he never met Luke Skywalker and Obi Wan: Think Pirates Of The Caribbean...in the Star Wars Universe...but taken seriously). Then there's Thundaar...(Star Wars meets...Planet Of The Apes, Conan The Barbarian, The Terminator, Mad Max, The X-Men, and Lord Of The Rings...on a post World War 3 Earth), and we can't forget Johnny Quest...(Harry Potter meets Raiders Of The Lost Ark). Cartoons like these will never get to the screen, etc., thanks to all the trash that is racing to the screen...well ahead of them, like... the He-Man movie...The Thundar Cats, and McG's "hacklicious" Hot Wheels, etc.!!!

Those cartoons that are truly worthy of being produced as live action films, like Captain Harlock, Thundaar, and or, the coldly brutal Johnny Quest...will not be produced...as the industry retreats from all such projects...thanks to all the stinkers that will most certainly fail at the box office. My point is clear...I'm talking about insuring quality control here, by insisting that only truly worth while projects are green lit by the studios...and embraced (backed) by the fans as a whole, as those projects make their collective way through the production process, promotions and publicity for, and to, the public at large...and their eventual release dates!!!

If this trend of Hollywood executives green lighting "anything they can get their hands on" cartoons and toy lines...as live action projects, soon we will be served Legos: The Movie...The Groovy Ghoulies, and My Pet Rock: The Movie, Galaxy High, and Sky Dancers!!! That will lead to films like the horrible Fat Albert And The Cosby Kids, the terrible Scooby Doo films, the cheapy llve action Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Movies, and the embarrassingly bad Josie And The Pussy Cats being made...and worse--this summers Nancy Drew--not that it was ever a cartoon, but...man, did it get royally f'd over by Hollywood!!! And that's the future of G.I. Joe!!! Nicholas Cage as a desperately contemplative...misunderstood Cobra Commander, anyone???

BTW...Michael Bay was a complete and total arrogant ass on the new Fox reality series "The Lot", last night!!! What a way to sale The Transformers, dude???!!!

As a whole...all of Hollywood has now Jumped The "Damn" Shark!!!
