Director Tim Burton and Walt Disney may have their leading star for Alice in Wonderland, a new take on the Lewis Carroll classic tale. Negotiations are in final talks with Australian actress Mia Wasikowska to star in the film. Mia, a regular on HBO's "In Treatment", began her career on the Aussie series "All Saints" and will next star opposite Daniel Craig in Edward Zwick's war drama Defiance. Production is set to begin on "Alice" in November.

Description:
The film, based on a script by Linda Woolverton (The Lion King), will be produced by longtime Burton collaborator Richard Zanuck, former Disney chairman Joe Roth and Jennifer and Suzanne Todd. It will be shot with live-action and performance-capture footage and presented in Disney Digital 3-D.

Alice is the perfect setting for Burton... as long as he doesn't try too hard (e.g. Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.)

Don't know this chic but Burton + Alice = I'm there.

So when is Johnny Depp gonna be announced as the Mad Hatter? or is he the cat? Actually, I'm surprised Burton didn't cast him as Alice.
Bohem Carter as the Queen no?

LMAO Hanso. But I have to say Deep and Burton got great chemistry together and if it keeps on working I say hey roll with it. Is this the Alice movie that it was suppose to be a darker more scarier tone? I really hope so. I dont want a Charlie and the chocolate factory movie I want a movie serious movie for Alice. Fingers cross on this.

Hanso, you're so right. You know Carter and Depp have to at least make a cameo in this film. But this should be very good. As Galaga said this is a perfect story for Burton.

I've gotta say, as much as I like Burton's stuff, I think that he's lost his touch for the storytelling aspect. His visual eye is very good, but I think he's gotten a lot softer since the days of Edward Scissorhands, Beetlejuice, etc. And in line with wolfmanX, I too want a harder Alice in the same vein as the McGee video game. I would like to see Del Toro do this. After watching Pan's for the first time two weeks ago I immediatly thought that he'd be perfect. I know he's super busy but he's definitly the next Burton.

I think the you're right hanso on the Bohem Carter casting choice. But maybe Depp could be the rabbit. Shit with all these high profile producers and such you could probably get a lot A list actors to do the little bit parts for this movie making it very enjoyable. You've got tweedle dee and tweedle dum, the two guards that are painting the roses red, the spinless-wet-noodle king, the cheshire cat, the reefer toking caterpiller (maybe Dave Chappelle for that one), the mad hatter and his fellow companions at the table, and the list goes on. This could be cool, as long as Burton brings the story alive WITH the great visuals.

I totally agree with captmOrgan77. I would love to see Del Toro do this also. I love the way his creatures comes out in his movies and think it would be perfect for Alice. But I know Burton will do a good job also. Maybe Deep can be the Queen LOL.

Im with the capt - Burton has almost become a paint-by-numbers director as of late....

Definitely sounds like a different project then the (most likely abandoned) adaptation of the American McGee's "Alice" video game. Way too family friendly. I'm sure there will be a "dark" edge, just like all of Burton's movie, but it probably won't be the Burton we all remember fondly.

On a side note, is the consensus that the Burton wheels came off the wagon at "Mars Attacks!" or "Planet of the Apes"? My vote is "Planet".

chocobar • Jul 24, 2008, 08:38am •
Paint by numbers director? Have you seen Sweeney Todd? Not his best work I'll admit but hardly on the level of Brett Ratner or Rob Cohen. They're paint by numbers. Although Planet of the Apes was paint by numbers film and crap. nothing but a money grab for Tim.

I do have doubts about this project only because Disney is attached to it. I can't imagine them wanted to stray to far from the cartoon version they have so much invested in. I imagin it will be more like Charlie and the Chocolate factory. PG with a couple "scary scenes"

Some great comments; I loved Dave Chapelle as the Catepillar and Depp as the Queen - pretty funny. But as chocobar really points out, it seems we want something twisted, preferrably "sick and twisted", but we won't get that with Disney, or at least I doubt we will.
