Timothy Harris is writing the screenplay for Imagi Studios' upcoming CG-animated feature film AstroBoy, it was jointly announced by Cecil Kramer, Executive VP of Production, and Maryann Garger, producer of AstroBoy.

Writer of such box office hits as Space Jam, Kindergarten Cop, Twins and Trading Places, Timothy Harris has been authoring screenplays for almost 30 years. His credits also include three acclaimed noir novels. In addition, Harris produced Falling Down, selected for the official competition at the 1993 Cannes International Film Festival.

Cecil Kramer stated: "I am thrilled to have the respected and gifted screenwriter Tim Harris on board. His proven track record in writing great entertainment makes him a perfect fit for bringing the timeless saga of 'AstroBoy,' one of the best-known characters in the world, to the big screen."

Maryann Garger said: "We warmly welcome Tim Harris to our team. I have been a longtime fan of Tim's writing, and it's enormously exciting and inspiring to be able to work together on such a grand-scale motion picture as 'AstroBoy'."

Commented Timothy Harris: "'AstroBoy' is a dream animation project. It's a classic, as timeless as Oliver Twist, set in the most incredible futuristic world. It's one of those stories that moves you emotionally while being funny and entertaining at the same time."

AstroBoy, the iconic character created by the "god of manga", Japan's Osamu Tezuka, has enjoyed great acclaim and success around the world as the hero of an animated television series which originally aired in the 1960s, with subsequent versions delighting new generations of fans.

Set in futuristic Metro City, AstroBoy is about a young robot with incredible powers created by a brilliant scientist to replace the son he has lost. Unable to fulfill the grieving father's expectations, our hero embarks on a journey in search of acceptance, experiencing betrayal and a netherworld of robot gladiators, before he returns to save Metro City and reconcile with the man who had rejected him.

AstroBoy will hit theaters sometime in 2009.

Huh...this guy should stick to producing, IMO. "Falling Down" is great...and then there's "Space Jam" and "Kindergarten Cop"...wow. Then again, since I never could stand "Astro Boy" even as a kid, I guess it doesn't matter all that much.

Yeah, I have no real interest in this either,,,,but if they can show me a cool trailer or something, who knows......For my friends and myself, Kindergarten Cop has given us many one-liners to use all the time...but I also think that stems from Opie & Anthony back in the day.

"Space Jam" is fair to knock - but "Kindergarten Cop" WAS awesome. I'm with Whiskeymovie - it's been the source of one-liners throughout my life:

"Boys have a ... girls have a ..."

"I am a cop you idiot!!!"

and the always classic:

"It's not a tumor!"

I tend to hate most anime. but once you bring it to the big screen in a different format (live action or cgi) I usually give it a chance. I used to hate Astro Boy as much as Speed Racer but if the trailers look interesting enough I'll check it out.

No, everybody, sorry to say it, but "Kindergarten Cop" was in fact NOT awesome. Aside from a source of one-liners, it has nothing else to offer. It's kind of sad that most of the one-liners aren't even that great, simply cute because they're delivered by 4 and 5 year olds. You know what? I also think Bill Cosby sucks with his "Kids Say the Darnedest Things" shows. Any movie that relies on the cute factor to be funny as much as that movie did is not worth anybody's time.

i'm with whiskey and adam on this one. falling down is one of the greatest movies ever made. a dude having a mid-life crisis/nervous breakdown at the same time, that's just too sick not to love. my neighbor knows a guy who dresses up as douglas in falling down when he performs with his metal band the whole shebang glasses suitcase black tie white shirt and black trousers.

oh and TGay4every1 "It's not a tumor!"
