According to the Hollywood Reporter, Tim Hill (Garfield: A Tail of Two Kitties) is in negotiations with 20th Century Fox regarding the director's chair for the upcoming live-action/CG film Alvin and the Chipmunks.

The film would be based on the animated trio of singing chipmunks who first rose to popularity as a cartoon in the late 1950's.

Fox is looking for a comedic actor to play the role of Dave Seville, pal to the three chipmunks, Alvin, Simon and Theodore, who will be computer generated.

KJ's Take:  I used to love the Chipmunks.  Chipmunks, Thundercats, He-Man, GI Joe and Captain Planet.  Aww man, talk about a blast from the past.

My thoughts exactly, exfan. LOL! While they are down there in the basement they'll dig up the old episodes of H.R. Punstuf and they'll make that one into a movie too. Well hey, it's for the kids anyway.

Damn KJ, I forgot all about Captain Planet. Memories are flooding in. Good stuff. Nastalgia is an interesting trip. See ya' all when I get back.

I grew up on the '80s version of "Alvin and the Chipmunks," but don't let that stop me from saying that that show completely sucked the life and fun out of these characters. If a movie really must be made, then I hope that the filmmakers draw inspiration from "The Alvin Show" and the early songs. I couldn't believe it when I found clips of "The Alvin Show" on YouTube. It amazed me that there was, once upon a time, actually a good, entertaining version of "Alvin and the Chipmunks." Of course, the movie will probably have to update the Chipmunks and include all kinds of attention-begging references to the internet, cell phones, and mp3 players. And I'm sure Alvin and the gang are going to sing their squeaky-voiced versions of Justin Timberlake or Eminem songs. Maybe the Chipettes will show up and sing Brittney Spears or Gwen Stephani songs. And I'm sure that we'll be bombarded by ad after ad for this thing, constantly being assaulted by bathroom jokes, product placement, and bad one-liners. Truly, Hollywood has entered its third Golden Age.

First of all let me say that this is a stupid idea. I really loved the Chipmunks as a kid as it was part of my Saturday morning cartoon line up, but this is just some assclown who can`t up with something original trying to make some money.
And dersu, you are right, but do you really expect them to make this waste of time based in the 80`s? Everything gets modernized for the sake of a new audience. Its just one of those things that has to happen unless you`re doing a western or period piece. Is it really worth complaining about?

ponyboy by "assclown who can`t up with something original" do you mean a no-talent assclown? Damn Michael Bolton! He sucks! Almost as badly as this movie will.

Everytime I thought about them making a movie, I always pictured Bob Saget as 'Dave Seville'...he used to sort of look like him IMHO.

I heard a chipmunks song this christmas and thought, wonder what ever happened to that? Wish I wouldn't have asked.

They can't stall on this one. They have to put this on the fast track and make this movie immediately, and have it out as soon as possible. Prior to the end of 2007. 2008 at the very latest.

Otherwise my kids will be old enough to make me take them to it.

Chipmunks was a simple gimmick (sing slow, play fast, and laugh laugh laugh) that got waaaay more milage than it ever should have. I remember watching this show in the 80s, and its the first time that nostalgia actually annoyed me

But seeing as they're pushing a dumb idea, If the movie is a success (hell, garfield got a sequel), then maybe they can have a "Little Spanish Flea VS the Chipmunks" follow up.

I generally try to keep an open mind about any film project, but this.... this is a bad concept. (Unless they can get Quinten Terrentino to direct it).

This is definitely a terrible idea. Now, a Captain Planet movie would be something. It could be educational and an action packed movie as well. That would be awesome. So would Thundercats and GI Joe (He-Man has already been dominated by the Dolph). Not this one, though. It will be awful.

i'm not suprised at all. Hollywood can no longer come up with an original idea.
