Six months after Shock Til You Drop announced it, Variety has confirmed that famous horror director Tobe Hooper will be helming the adaptation of Stephen King's FROM A BUICK 8. For a while, it was thought that another horror icon, George A. Romero, would be directing the film but due to production stalling and Romero's schedule, it wasn't meant to be. Instead, Hooper has taken over the project for Moonstone Entertainment & Amicus Entertainment which own the option rights. Johnathon Schaech and Richard Chizmar are handling the screenplay.

"From a Buick 8 will not be your stock horror film by any means. There's a really cool, layered quality to the story," Hooper said. "The producers, writers and I shared the same sensibility about the project and responded to it in a similar way."

Plot Concept: The story centers around a mysterious Buick stored in the shed of a state trooper barracks. This isn't any normal vehicle but a portal to another universe (Stephen King's Midworld/Territories verse featured in many of his novels.). Trying to understand his father's death and obsession with the car, a curious son tries to know more about it.

But this book isn't a horror story....It's a story about unanswered questions....

Stand By Me wasn't Horror, but it was a great flick, so maybe this will be up that same road?

I wasn't questioning the quality of the movie, just stating that the book is not a horror book. I just found it strange that the article stresses the horror chops of the director, but that this story doesn't NEED that kind of director. That's all I was saying.

Well, I will challenge the quality, I am a huge King fan.... I love his writing, and I read From a Buick 8 from cover to cover and it was apparent from the beginning that this was less a horror tale, and more a story about spectacular happening in the most unspectacular of places, and the way the characters deal with these happenings. There is a lot of suspense, but it just never takes off like Shawshank or the Green Mile, we do get some answers to some questions but believe me it leans over into the unspectacular column way more than the spectacular. I can actually remember reading this thinking the characters are interesting, but if this was filmed it would be snooze central. Could be some cool creature FX though...

They can change it to a chevy and just name it Christine 2: A Portal Within. Heh

Never read the book but it does sound interesting. Better than some of the crapfest movies they've been coming out with lately. If they didnt make movies from books i'd miss out on a lot of good reading (pun intended)

Tobe Hooper is a great director but he has so many different directing styles... see Invaders from Mars and LifeForce for proof of that... so ok he's been relegated to TV shows and pilots for a while (he directed the Taken pilot) and a lot of his TV stuff I cant tell that it was the same guy that directed Texas Chainsaw Massacre... he needs to find his own directors style... since all his flicks dont feel like they were directed by the same person at all.
Tobe is kinda like Sam Raimi only he really never got his "BIG BREAK" that Raimi got with Spiderman but he's got a damn fine portfolio!
