Tobey Maguire Attacks in ROBOTECH

It seems that Spidey star, Tobey Maguire, may be ditching his web persona for a while in favor of giant robots in ROBOTECH, says Hollywood Reporter. The trade is reporting that Maguire and Warner Bros have optioned the rights to the anime manga franchise based off the hit 1980s show. Maguire will help produce the live action feature film under his production company, Maguire Entertainment. Both Maguire and Warner Bros hopes to turn this into the next big sci-fi franchise and is setting it up to be a major tent-pole release.

"We are very excited to bring 'Robotech' to the big screen," Maguire said. "There is a rich mythology that will be a great foundation for a sophisticated, smart and entertaining film."

they are planning on showing all THREE waves of alien invasions? (Robotech, The Masters, Invid Invasion) ... I think thats a bit much "cram" for the first flick.... come to think about it... why dont they just adapt "SDF:MACROSS" as a live action movie?
off topic, what ever became of the live action ESCAFLOWNE they started?

Now this is a Sci-Fi franchise that, if done right with respect to the audience not just being 8 year olds, could actually become something really special. Tobey Maguire probably grew up watching many of the 80's animes people now in their 30' enjoyed. It is no wonder he feels inspired by them(cartoons) and would like to see a grand big screen treatment of this truly fantastic series. Hey... If I had the money and the juice I'd make these kind of movies too. Heck, Speilberg and Lucas grew up on Action Serials (the "live action cartoons" of the time) and look what their inspiration has given the world of Sci-Fi/Action genre entertainment.

McKracken, Macross was good, but it was not nearly as engaging or popular as the Harmony Gold adaption. Think about it, you said "adapt SDF:Macross". If they do, you get Robotech: the Macross saga. Sort of.

Hmmm.... Speakling of grand space operas a big screen treatment of "Senki no Senkai" would be nice too. However, it's not as popular in the US.

No, they're obviously not cramming all three series into one film! Didn't it say something about hoping to turn this into the next big franchise series? That would mean several films, hence why they went on to describe the "first invasion".

BUT, as cool as this could turn out, I already can see the masses of Robotech fans crying about how stuff was changed or cut out...how they condensed too much into each movie. The only way fans will be happy with a live action adaption, would to have a new, big budget TV series so they could flesh out everything. OR, maybe a trilogy of movies per each invasion story...especially the first two.

Interesting to see if fans freak out over the movie as bad as they did over Transformers...cause Robotech has a much more in depth story and less odds of getting it right.

I loved Robotech when I was a kid... If done right this could be amazing... They need to stay true to the straight edged story...

Wow, Tobey went all out with the creativity and thought put into the name of his production company.

Wow this is great news! My home page in the morning is robotech.com to get a point a day since they went online and I'm a Lieutenant in rank there which means 5k hits. I guess Toby is going for Rick Hunter which is ok with me. The F/x are good enough now. I hope they keep the soundtrack or remaster it. This is great news, my favorite Sci-fi of all time coming soon!

Finally!!! If you are counting...you already know that this is yet another movie that I called on the studio heads to make...and blam!!! First Johnny Quest, and now this!!!

But that's the good news...here's the bad news: Ain't It Cool News.com is reporting that Tobey Maguire is taking the role of Rick Hunter. Look folks, I'll tell it to you straight...Tobey is no Rick Hunter as he is too old!!! You need a kid like Zac Efron to play the part. And Lisa Hayes should be played by someone like Gwyneth Paltrow. Although Lisa is supposed to be the same age as Rick, I always pictured her as older than him, much older.

What is so cool about this story is that there is a reason for the giant robots and their ability to not only act as infantry but to convert into flying fighters...well, the enemy are human like space aliens, but here is the twist...they are giants...with badass soldiers who are like Storm Troopers, just 30 feet tall, each.

The Earth Forces have learned of their size thanks to one of their ships crash landing on Earth without a crew...now, the Governments have secretly used seized alien technology to build a defense force that can match the aliens should they be hostiles...and should they come looking for their missing space craft...an experimental city sized space craft carrier that is even more deadly than anything the aliens have ever built. Nothing, even in their arsenal, can match it. It is the ultimate weapon.

Now...we need a Star Blazers (Space Cruiser Yamato) film, Gundam movie...an Akira live action film, followed by Perfect Blue, Thundarr The Barbarian and while we're at it...a G-Force (Battle Of The Planet) live action film!!!

I was more into Star Blazers, but this could be a lot of fun with great effects. Sure, some Transformers fans went a little over the edge when changes were made to canon, but people still flocked to see the film. I'm sure some changes will have to be made for Robotech to hit the big big screen, but as long as the producers stay close to the source material it should be a big hit.

Tashiro • Sep 07, 2007, 08:55am •
I'm actually of mixed feelings on this. Part of me is glad to be able to see Robotech on the big screen, but part of me would rather they were doing it as Macross, rather than the three unrelated shows.

Don't get me wrong, I liked the cartoon (but preferred the novels), but Macross made a lot more sense. Protoculture wasn't some 'energy source', it was what it said it was - a proto culture. The Zentradi were freaked out by humanity's society.

Ah well.

As long as Max stilll has blue hair and Myra green, it's all god.

Actually, they should retain all anime hair colors. :)
