With bookstores losing money, mergers loom - Mar 23, 2007 - 11:40am
Support independent bookstores. The giant corporations, Amazon included, don't need your money.

"The Golden Compass" video game shipping Fall 2007 - Feb 28, 2007 - 01:45pm
This is possibly the greatest young adult series ever -- far more depth than Harry Potter or the Narnia books, though decidedly secular as well. The first book was a classic the minute it came off the presses back in the mid-90s, and though it might not be a blockbuster on the level of LOTR or even Narnia, it's just as powerful in terms of storytelling, theme and literary tradition. Can't wait to see Nicole Kidman as the conniving Mrs. Coulter.

"MEG" Getting a Green Light? - Jan 01, 2007 - 06:06pm
Alten isn't much of a writer, but his concept for how a megaladon could exist today was pretty cool. Not scientifically plausible, but plausible enough to build a solid B movie around it. Still, the Sci-Fi Channel suggestion is probably much more realistic than a $150 million feature.

Xmas Shopping List - Dec 13, 2006 - 06:05pm
For the record, I helped open a bookstore in Malibu during the summer of 2004. Pamela Anderson was a regular -- came in most mornings, in fact. She is sharp, reads great books and is incredibly sweet. She impressed the hell out of me, and after returning to the Bay Area after the summer I often wondered if she got the idea for Stacked from our bookstore. I've heard rumors that she originally wanted her character to be an expert in Russian Literature but that Fox axed that aspect of the show's storyline. Bottom line: Pamela Anderson is a pretty awesome person.

Dead Again - Nov 24, 2006 - 02:01pm
I don't remember which REsident Evil it was, but it's the one where you're in the Racoon City mansion. I cleared the left side of the house, explored the right side, then went back down the left side, thinking it was clear and safe. Nearly crapped myself when a skinless dog zombie came flying through a window (or did it drop from the ceiling?) and mangled my on-screen counterpart. Then there was the Clocktower series, with the eerie music punctuated by an appearance from Scissorman. There was something incredibly creepy about a bad guy who moved deliberately around the room while searching for me. Both of those games got my blood pumping something fierce. So much so that I rarely play games from the horror genre anymore. Too stressful.
