This is possibly the greatest young adult series ever -- far more depth than Harry Potter or the Narnia books, though decidedly secular as well. The first book was a classic the minute it came off the presses back in the mid-90s, and though it might not be a blockbuster on the level of LOTR or even Narnia, it's just as powerful in terms of storytelling, theme and literary tradition. Can't wait to see Nicole Kidman as the conniving Mrs. Coulter.

Alten isn't much of a writer, but his concept for how a megaladon could exist today was pretty cool. Not scientifically plausible, but plausible enough to build a solid B movie around it. Still, the Sci-Fi Channel suggestion is probably much more realistic than a $150 million feature.
