TOKYOPOP acquires publishing rights to AKIRA and LUPIN THE THIRD

Date: Tuesday, July 09, 2002

At last weekend's Anime Expo, held in Long Beach, California, TOKYOPOP announced the acquisition of the publishing rights to classic manga titles AKIRA and LUPID THE THIRD. TokyoPop is the leading American publisher of manga (i.e. Japanese comics).

AKIRA documents the lives of warring street gangs living in a post-apocalyptic Tokyo as they fight for survival against government conspiracies and super powered killers. The on-going story in the manga is an extension of the plot from the feature film of the same name. The AKIRA feature film is almost universally considered the greatest anime movie ever created.

LUPIN THE THIRD follows the adventures of the title character, who is the latest in a long family line of super criminals that steal from the rich for personal gain. Lupin III was featured in the 1979 feature film THE CASTLE OF CAGLIOSTRO, which Steven Spielberg called "one of the greatest adventure films of all time". The manga explores Lupin's continued adventures.

"We are thrilled at the opportunity to release such treasured classics," said Stuart Levy, TOKYOPOP Founder and CEO. The company is already responsible for the comic book releases of series like SAILOR MOON, COWBOY BEBEOP and GUNDAM WING.
