J.R.R. Tolkien's son, Christopher, has gone public regarding recent reports of his disdain for the coming LORD OF THE RINGS films based on his father's books.
Tolkien, who edited his father's last book, THE SILMARILLION, issued a statement last Friday wherein he admitted that he had doubts about the viability of films based on the trilogy, though he noted that it was only his personal opinion. Though he had doubts that the books could be realized in visual form, Tolkien maintains he is not critical of the way the coming films intepret his father's works.
He adds, "I recognize that this is a debatable and complex question of art, and the suggestions that have been made that I 'disapprove' of the films, whatever their cinematic quality, even to the extent of thinking ill of those with whom I may differ, are wholly without foundation."
