As rumored for sometime, Tom Cruise is poised to return to the realm of sci-fi. The actor's name has been mentioned attached to Joseph Kosinksi's project, Oblivion (formerly Horizons), for sometime but the project has been in turnaround with Walt Disney deciding to drop it a few months back. Well, it seems that Universal Pictures is prepared to give the $100 million budget a chance and they have confirmed their lead star in Cruise boarding the production. Aimed at the PG-13 audience, the film will begin shooting in October under the lensing eye of director Kosinski (Tron: Legacy). Writers William Monahan and Karl Gajdusek penned the screenplay.

Plot Concept: In a future where the Earth's surface has been irradiated beyond recognition, the remnants of humanity live above the clouds, safe from the brutal alien Scavengers that stalk the ruins. But when surface drone repairman Jak discovers a mysterious woman in a crash-landed pod, it sets off an unstoppable chain of events that will force him to question everything he knows.

Thanks to Chopsaki for the submission.

Not to excited about Nutjob Cruise attached to this one but the story at least sounds interesting.

I wish  they had stuck to the original concept cause the new one sounds like a rip-off of Battle Angel Alitta to me and I don't want anything to get in the way Cameron making that film after AVATAR

Even so I will be seeing this when it comes out plus I'm a fan of Cruise to boot. I hope the film is huge so maybe they can greenlit At The Mountains of Madness finally

Minority Report was good and so was War of the Worlds. Sci-fi is a better fit for Cruise; he can be himself just doing his job and be very out of place at the same time. I like that combination.

Sounds interesting.  Should be visually stunning if done right.  Especially the contrast between the dwellers above the clouds and the surface of the world.  Have to keep an eye on this.

Um... wasn't this a StarTrek TOS episode?

TheMovieGuy28 5/23/2011 7:40:23 AM

You know what's crazy is the other night I was thinking about random story ideas about movies, and I thought how the Wookie's live up in the trees on their planet, and thought why couldn't humans live up in the clouds? (Granted, I just watched the OG Tale Spin episode where Balloo and King Louie make flying sky gas stations, but still)

and if this film is anywhere near as good as the concept art, I'll be happy to see it. Also, I'm with Wise. Cruise may go off on the deep end sometimes, but I love his films. Minority Report is such a fantastic movie, and his stretch from '02-05 was some of his best work, Last Samurai, Collateral, Magnolia, etc. etc. And call me a chump, but I enjoyed War of the Worlds. It was rather decent

I'm forever skerred of seein a Cthulu show up. What if it's real and gets p*ssed we made an inaccurate representation about it? You know how news travels to ancient underground cities

The Great Old Ones? Everyone is worried something will seriously happen next year to end the world. Anyone hear about that guy that tried to predict the Rapture a couple of days ago? LOL!

violator14 5/23/2011 8:42:48 AM

Kinda reminds me of him in LEGEND. Sounds good to me.

Actually, this concept reminds me of the parody trailers featuring Ben Stiller in the film Tropic Thunder.
