Tom Cruise Gets Used in THE TOURIST

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Thursday, August 14, 2008
Source: Variety

While his participation isn't a done deal yet, Tom Cruise and Spyglass Entertainment are circling each other on The Tourist, the Bharat Nalluri-directed remake of the 2005 French thriller Anthony Zimmer. The film has emerged as the strongest contender for Cruise's next film, and his first star vehicle since the Bryan Singer-directed Valkyrie, which has been put back on the 2008 schedule by United Artists. The thriller was penned by Julian Fellowes (Gosford Park)  while Spyglass principals Gary Barber, Roger Birnbaum and Jonathan Glickman are set to produce with Canal Plus.

Plot Concept: The thriller concerns an American tourist who finds his life in danger when a female Interpol agent uses him as a dupe to flush out an elusive criminal with whom she once had an affair.

Flint, wake up! There're naked ladies everywhere! Flint? Wow... Cruise must be quite a sedative.

Well, from what i have seen, Tom Cruise doesn't really take on bad movies. Yes, every actor has an exception, but if he is wanting to do this, there must be something there to make it attractive to him.

Did they gave too much of the plot in the synopsis? (i.e. the agent's affair with the criminal)

What the hell is up with Tom Cruise? The guy needs to be in a romantic comedy, comedy or action summer flick to get back in people's good graces. Starring in Lions for Lambs, Valkyre and The Tourist isn't the right way. It seems he did well in pickin his little cameo in Tropic Thunder so maybe he should pay attention to whoever convinced him for that.
That Stiller/Cruise idea for The Hardy Men might be something he should look into.

Well this sounds like it could be an action filled movie but even a good spy/thriller should be enough to get people to the theater.
Whiskey is right that Cruise usually picks good films. Especially if he's the lead character, which he isn't in LfL.

Didn't he just back out of Edwin A. Salt because he was too old for an action spy thriller? That's what this sounds like. Well, that explanation sounded bogus to me anyway.
