Tom Cruise still in IRON MAN?

Scooper Shan wrote me today from the Comic Con with a scoop regarding the possibility of Tom Cruise still being involved in IRON MAN.

Shan wrote:

Hey Guys,

I was at Comic Con on Saturday for the MARVEL Panel. I might even have a scoop for you that WASN'T announced from anyone on the panel. I sat a row behind two of the guys from Paramount - I knew they were from Paramount because they had call sheets, or itineraries of the panel, with Paramount logos all over them and kept mentioning 'the time''.

There was a woman too - and they were talking amongst themselves once the IRON MAN stuff got underway. All I heard was this "I believe Tom Cruise has got it in the bag, yeah". That's what one of them said to the other. I swear. I remember Cruise rumors a few years back about this, but didn't know he still in the mix? I don't know how much these people would know, but I think it's still very interesting nonetheless.

Shan.

Well there you have it! Could Cruise still be involved? If it means anything, Shan is a constant scooper for Cinescape, and not just a random bird flying around my apartment!

Favreau has said that he is looking for a relative unknown for the part, but time will tell. Thanks Shan for the heads up!

I only hope that his Iron Man Suit will be equipped with High Heels, to make him look taller :D

(adding to codenamev's) Please Xenu, use your volcano powers and stop the uber-narcissist wacko from being part of this film. The power of thetans compels you! I am so sick of this asshat. The movie would be overshadowed by his ridiculous antics and his phantom baby. NO TOM CRUISE!

Cruise definately looks the part and he can act, but he is out of his mind. Besides I really don't think this vehicle needs a huge star like Cruise. If he's in it, fine, but if not even better.

I think Cruise would have been great for IM back when he first optioned the rights several years back. But a) he's too big and it would cost too much to have him, and b) he's lost his mind. He hasn't been the "kiss of death" to all his movies, but I definitely think his off-screen antics have hurt his BO clout. I think it's THE primary reason MI:III didn't do better. #14 has it right, Fav should go recognizable B-list.

I used to be a big Tom Cruise fan, but the crazier he gets, the less I want to see anything with him in it. I did really enjoy The Last Samurai... up until the point [** very minor spoiler alert **] where he chucked his sword halfway across the battlefield like a spear to kill a guy who was shooting at him with a revolver. But doesn't the "source" of this "rumor" seem a little iffy to anyone else? Some "guys" and "a woman" with pieces of paper "with Paramount logos all over them" said they "believe" he has it "in the bag"? There are lots of things I think old Tom has "in the bag" (as well as "in the closet") but this all seems pretty weak. Of course, if one of them had been wearing a T-shirt that said "Tom Crusie will be Iron Man" then that would be a whole different story...

I am not a big cruise fan but he can act and make a few good movies - I agree with others though, he would muck up the money and flow of production for the movie

I can see it now: Mandarin will only be a front for an alien named Xenu. IM will defeat him by creating armor that simulates the abilities of an Operating Thetan-7 and will throw Mandarin into a volcano which will explode creating new forms of life on Earth.

Clooney as the worst Batman ever...please do not mention Clooney again. I was at the Marvel presentation in San Diego and the only name the audience asked Favreau about was Matthew Fox from LOST and he kind of acknowledged that as a good casting. He would be in a decent price range.

I think Cruise could engineer a comeback of sorts with this one. Its actually quite simple. When it comes time to make the promotional rounds just FOCUS on the movie in a sane, rational, manner. No diatribes against psychiatric drugs or hyper-active behavior on talk shows.
