TOO HUMAN Set for August

Long in development game on the way.

GameSpot reports the long in development video game TOO HUMAN finally has an official release date.  The Xbox 360 game will hit stores on August 19th in North America and August 29th in Europe. 

In the works for almost 10 years by its developer Silicon Knights, the game was first announced at E3 in 1999.

HUMAN has players take on the role of the warrior Baldur--one of many characters based on Norse mythology--and then the player can choose to play one of several classes, including champion, defender, and bioengineer.  The story chronicles the ongoing struggle between cybernetic Norse gods, the invading machine presence and mortal men.  It features many Norse gods and characters from Norse mythology including Thor, Loki, Odin, Heimdall, Freyja, and Mimir.

Microsoft also revealed that TOO HUMAN will support co-op play through its campaign. The co-op play will be via its Xbox Live online service.

Yes, it does sound like a cool idea, but ten years in the making? That sounds like it's going to stink.

Ahhhhhh joy. The game looks fantastic and I'm ready to get my hands on it. No idea why it took so long.

This was supposed to be a PS1 game and has been evolving ever since. It looks cool but I have my doubts since I know 2 guys that worked on the game at different points during it's long production and both had bad things to say about the company and the game itself. Hopefully it has been improved since they were on it. With ten years to make, this game better kick ass. If it doesn't make a crap load of money for them to make back 10 years of production costs, they might as well throw in the towel. According to the guys I know, it took so long because the head of the company would always come up with new additions and mechanics for the game after seeing other games. So it seems like they just couldn't decide exactly what type of game to make and kept evolving it. Also, every time another generation of consoles were released, they would obviously have to make major changes to keep up with the technology. I guess we'll just have to wait and see.

Silicon Knights has make some great games in the past. I'll give them the benefit of the doubt.

I'll never understand why people assume that just because a game has been in development for ten years that it means it's going to suck. It's not as if this is Duke Nukem Forever, which has indeed taken forever to not come out. The game has been put on hold several times because Silicon Knights is so passionate about the project that they did not want to sell it short because of hardware restraints. It was first envisioned as a PS1 game, but they never had much actual work done on it back then, and it was set aside for several years. It isn't as if there's been a development team working on it non-stop for a decade. They've been collecting ideas, and doing essentially "rough sketches" of what they wanted the game to be, but it's been an ever evolving process. These guys have had other projects in the interim including the fantastic Metal Gear Solid remake on the gamecube "Twin Snakes" and the survival horror stand out Eternal Darkness: Sanity's Requium, and Too Human was again put on hold. All along they've been refining what they've had in mind for Too Human, but the game has been on the back burner off and on as well, waiting for the hardware capabilities to catch up to their ambitious ideals. You can't blame them for setting it aside until what they originally envisioned was possible. Prey was released almost a decade after it initially was announced, and while it wasn't perfect, it was still a damned good game. If you've seen gameplay footage it looks a bit like Mass Effect blended with God of War. You really can't go wrong with a combination like that.
