TOP 10: A desperado sweeps box office
By: Patrick SauriolDate: Sunday, September 14, 2003
Robert Rodriguez's ONCE UPON A TIME IN MEXICO blasted its way to the top of the box office this weekend. The third in the EL MARIACHI series had the highest opening of the trilogy, grossing an estimated $24 million dollars Friday to Sunday. Guess those commercials emphasizing Johnny Depp's role in the film paid off from his PIRATES success.
Ridley Scott's MATCHSTICK MEN/b> had a respectable opening with a little over $13 M in ticket sales. Third place went to the horror film CABIN FEVER with $8.4 M. Overall the three new films in the top ten had far higher grosses than last week's low-key results.
Also of note were Disney's FREAKY FRIDAY which finally cracked $100 M and MGM's JEEPERS CREEPERS 2, now over the $30 M threshold. Last week's number one film, DICKIE ROBERTS: FORMER CHILD STAR, fell to fourth place; not so bad considering that film didn't cost so much to make. On the other hand, THE ORDER fell by more than 70%, far enough to place it out of the top ten moneymakers for this weekend. The pain!
My prediction for next weekend: UNDERWORLD takes in at least $30 M and is number one at the box office. Call me crazy but it's just a gut feeling...
