TOP 10: DODGEBALL hits the mark

By: Patrick Sauriol
Date: Sunday, June 20, 2004

Audiences were looking to laugh this weekend as 20th Century Fox's new comedy DODGEBALL: A TRUE UNDERDOG STORY claimed the top spot at the box office. Taking in an estimated $30 million dollars worth of ticket sales, DODGEBALL powered it way past Steven Speilberg's new romantic comedy/drama THE TERMINAL, which landed with $18.7 M and change.

After two consecutive weekends at number one, Warner Bros. HARRY POTTER AND THE PRISONER OF AZKABAN came in third. With an additional $17.4 M added to its talley, the third POTTER movie's total take now stands at $190 M, and the summer is just beginning.

SHREK 2 is down a little over 40% from last weekend, but still earning eight figures. The real surprise is GARFIELD; in its second week it made more than either THE STEPFORD WIVES or THE CHRONICLES OF RIDDICK. The perilous 65% drop-off of RIDDICK in its second weekend nearly certainly spells the end of any hopes for a sequel.

The week's other major release, AROUND THE WORLD IN 80 DAYS, benefitted from opening on Wednesday, but not by much. The expensive ($100+ M) period adventure made almost $7 M in its first weekend of release.

Here are the estimated box office receipts of the top ten films from June 18 through to June 20, with their weekend gross and the movie's total domestic gross to date. This week I'm trying something new and coloring the new films in red -- if you like or or hate it, let me know through our feedback form.
