TOP 10: Freddy and Jason vs. box office
By: Patrick SauriolDate: Monday, August 25, 2003
The slasher kings retained their crown for the second weekend in a row. New Line's FREDDY VS. JASON once again took the first spot at the box office this past weekend, grossing nearly $13.5 million dollars. That's the first time a movie's been able to hold the first place position for two weeks in a row since May when X-MEN 2 held it. With a little over $60 M in receipts so far, the kids at New Line will be happy indeed.
The movies ranking in thee next three spots were identical to last weekend's chart as well. S.W.A.T. is closing in at $100 M; OPEN RANGE is no doubt benefitting from good reviews and showing it has some legs; and FREAKY FRIDAY is taking over the job previously held by SPY KIDS 3-D by offering family fare for audiences.
Jackie Chan's action-adventure flick THE MEDALLION didn't perform as well, netting just $8.2 M. Still, that doesn't compare to Dimension's MY BOSS'S DAUGHTER which emerged at number ten. Ow! At least Ashton still has Demi to dine with at Orso's.
The other big news is that FINDING NEMO has finally topped the gross of THE LION KING (not to be confused with the adult film THE LOIN KING) as the highest-grossing film of all-time. NEMO's grosses now stands at $329.8 million, beating LION KING by one million so far.
Next week's big release will likely be JEEPERS CREEPERS 2, with both AMERICAN SPLENDOR and THE BATTLE OF SHAKER HEIGHTS expanding the number of screens.
Here's the list of the top grossing films from August 22 to 24, their weekend gross and the film's total gross to date:
