TOP 10: HELLBOY takes top spot
By: Patrick SauriolDate: Monday, April 05, 2004
Audiences were seeing red at the box office this past weekend. Revolution Studios' HELLBOY claimed victory and captured the top position on the chart, raking in an estimated $23.5 million dollars. As far as superhero movies go, HELLBOY's opening gross doesn't put it in the big leagues of X-MEN or even the opening weekend for BLADE II ($32 million back in March 2002) but it's still a very decent showing. Will it be able to hold momentum next weekend?
The Rock's new flick, WALKING TALL, opened with slightly more than $15 M -- not a blockbuster showing for The People's Champion who at one time was considered for the part of Hellboy. At third spot was SCOOBY-DOO 2 which dropped 50% in its second weekend of release. Disney's HOME ON THE RANGE, what could be the studio's last traditional animated feature, did OK with $14 M in ticket sales. Meanwhile, all those teenage girls were checking out THE PRINCE & ME to the tune of $10 M. Still making a killing (pardon the pun) is THE PASSION OF THE CHRIST, and next weekend's Easter Sunday weekend may elevate the film back into the top five.
Here are the estimated box office receipts of the top ten films from April 2 through to April 4, with their weekend gross and the movie's total domestic gross to date:
1. HELLBOY $23,500,000 $23,500,000
2. WALKING TALL $15,300,000 $15,300,000
