Top 10: Mr. Black unseats Mr. Rock
By: Patrick SauriolDate: Sunday, October 05, 2003
Jack Black's SCHOOL OF ROCK eclipsed The Rock's RUNDOWN to become the new number one movie at the box office. According to studio estimates, the Paramount movie grossed $20.2 million dollars on its opening weekend, nearly $2 M better than THE RUNDOWN's debut last weekend -- and on fewer screens. Of course, it remains to be seen how much of a dropoff SCHOOL experiences next weekend.
MGM's new Denzel Washington thriller, OUT OF TIME, also did good numbers as well on its opening weekend. THE RUNDOWN dropped about half in its grosses, still maintaining a respectable showing. UNDERWORLD's total gross is now $44 M and COLD CREEK MANOR is set to vanish, poised on the precipse of the chart. Meanwhile, Sofia Coppola's LOST IN TRANSLATION expanded its number of screens and vaulted three positions up the list, coming in at number seven.
Next Wednesday will see the limited release of Clint Eastwood's latest, MYSTIC RIVER, and on Friday we finally get to see KILL BILL VOLUME ONE and THE HOUSE OF THE DEAD.
Here is the list of the top ten grossing films from October 3 to 5, their weekend gross and the film's total domestic gross to date:
