TOP 10: No nightmare at the box office

It sure wasn't a nightmare at the box office for New Line. The movie may have spent a decade in development hell but FREDDY VS. JASON took a commanding $36 million dollars over this past weekend, pleasing New Line execs and horror fans alike. It will be interesting to see how well the picture fares next week; horror movies usually sink a little faster than other genres. Nevertheless, in one weekend the film made its budget back and it still has a healthy run at theaters before hitting home video. Will there be a round two now?

The boys from S.W.A.T. sank to second place as expected but $18 M isn't anything to sneeze at. Kevin Costner's western flick OPEN RANGE had a respectible $14 M opening while UPTOWN GIRLS fell a little flat with just $11 M. PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN is now well within the prized $250 M gross mark and SPY KIDS 3-D will cross the $100 M barrier later this week.

Next weekend: Lisa Kudrow goes MARCI X, Jackie Chan seeks THE MEDALLION and Ashton Kutcher covets MY BOSS'S DAUGHTER.
