TOP 10: SPY KIDS triumph over a Tomb Raider
By: Patrick SauriolDate: Monday, July 28, 2003
It was Robert Rodriguez's SPY KIDS 3D: GAME OVER that took the top spot at the box office this past weekend, surprising industry analysts who thought the third mission couldn't fly that high. It's the best opening for Dimension Films' youthful secret agent franchise and proof positive that there may be still further adventures for Carmen and Juni in the years to come.
When the dust settles over the summer of 2003, Disney's PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN will be considered one of the biggest successes. The Jerry Bruckheimer produced adventure is still showing there's plenty of wind left in its sails, earning an estimates $22 million last weekend. Chances are very good it will be crossing the coveted $200 M line a week or so from today.
While not entirely a disappointment, the second TOMB RAIDER could only muster a showing at the fourth spot in the top ten, eclipsed by Michael Bay's BAD BOYS II by a few hundred thousand. Universal's SEABISCUIT, opening on more than one thousand fewer screens than the other pictures, still performed well enough to cross the finish line at fifth spot.
Only netting an additional $5 M in its fourth week of release, it looks like TERMINATOR 3 isn't going to come close to its predecessor's $200 M gross. NEMO is still hanging in there, about $15 M shy of beating THE LION KING as the all-time grossing animated movie. Next week we'll see the opening of AMERICAN WEDDING (where I'll be laying my bet for what film will be number one at the box office) and GIGLI, the Ben Affleck/Jennifer Lopez romantic comedy that's had some awful early buzz.
Here's the list of the top grossing films from July 25 to 27, their weekend gross and the film's total gross to date:
1. SPY KIDS 3-D: GAME OVER $32,500,000 $32,500,000
