TOP 10: SUPREMACY over CATWOMAN
By: Patrick SauriolDate: Sunday, July 25, 2004
THE BOURNE SUPREMACY opened huge this weekend, taking in an estimated $53.5 million dollars, making it one of the best opening weekends for a summer movie so far. Compare SUPREMACY's earnings to that for Warner Bros. CATWOMAN, which placed third but only netted $17 M and change, and the clear choice for the audience's money is evident.
Last week's number one movie, I, ROBOT, dropped to second spot, down 57% from its opening weekend. With SPIDER-MAN 2 now playing on IMAX screens, another $15 M was added to the sequel's nine digits tally. Michael Moore's FAHRENHEIT 9/11 also crossed the $100 M barrier this weekend, setting another record for documentaries. Counterprogramming efforts such as Warners' A CINDERELLA STORY and New Line Cinema's THE NOTEBOOK are proving that romance can find its own niche amongst the special effects blockbusters of the summer.
Next week more contestants enter the derby including the latest thriller from M. Night Shyamalan, the live-action THUNDERBIRDS movie, a tale of two stoners looking for some White Castle to munch on, and Jonathan Demme's remake of THE MANCHURIAN CANDIDATE. It's going to be an interesting top ten in seven days.
Here are the estimated box office receipts of the top ten films from July 23 through to July 25 with their weekend gross and the movie's total domestic gross to date. New films are signified in red.
