Which titles we're looking forward to.

If ’07 and ’08 weren’t high enough watermarks in video gaming 2009 looks to be bringing it’s own game, so to speak. Sure, we’re looking forward to Final Fantasy’s first outing on an X-Box but, frankly, the list below are the stuff my dreams are made of. But before we hit the big time let’s take a quick look at some other games that look to make a mark.
Can’t wait for Pandemic’s WWII French resistance stealth game. It looks like it’s ready to inject new blood into both the stealth and WWII genres. Occupied countries are black and white. Liberation returns color. Just like in real life!

Sega recently posted a trailer on Xbox Live and this game looks like a mutha-fuddin butt-kicking, Devil May Cry-esque good time with a very hot protagonist.
Billed as a sequel as well as a great looking video game Ghostbusters and with no less than Dan Aykroyd and Harold Ramis writing the games storyline AND with Bill Murray and Ernie Hudson lending voice work (along with other GB alumni Brian Doyle-Murray, Annie Potts and William Atherton, we think we know who we’ll be calling.
With those illustrious opening acts out of the way, let’s movie on now, shall we, to the top five games I can’t wait to get my grubby little paws on.
5. Dark Void
Published by: Capcom
Developed by: Airtight Games

Release Date: May 2009
Genre: Action
Airtight brought us the original Xbox classic “Crimson Skies”. Dark Void is their next big outing. First off, I’m a sucker for a rocket pack. Combine that with a steam-punk aesthetic and some unique elements such as vertical (standing on the wall) and mid-air combat and this is a must have for me.
4. Champions Online
Published by: Atari
Developed by: Cryptic Studios
Release Date: Summer 2009
Are you kidding? A Superhero MMORPG on the 360? Count me in. I loved Cryptic’s previous online hero fest City of Heroes and can’t wait to see their super-wares for the 360 (and PC).
We’re going to go ahead and venture that all their experience on CoH will make Champions Online even better. After Cryptic’s recent acquisition by Atari, 2K decided to opt out of distribution. Not a step up in my opinion but hopefully this will have no effect on Cryptic’s vision.
3. Bioshock 2: Sea of Dreams
Published by: 2K
Developed by: 2K Marin
Release Date: Fall 2009
Genre: FPS
Bioshock is one of my very favorite games of all time. Not much is known about this follow up (only a teaser has appeared so far) to 2007’s smash Xbox 360 hit (recently made available for the PS3). Bioshock’s creator Ken Levine is said to be hands on for this follow up. I would count on another smash from Big Daddies everywhere.
2. Batman: Arkham Asylum
Published by: Eidos Interactive
Developed by: Rocksteady Studios
Release Date: TBA 2009
Genre: Action
Could the Dark Knight finally get the videogame he deserves? Holy Caped Crusader Batman, this could be the one! The screenshots look unbelievable and publisher Eidos promises this is the real thing. The serious and dark tone of this one looks extremely promising, bringing a bit of Alex Ross to the mix.
1. Resident Evil 5
Developer: Capcom
Publisher: Capcom
Release Date: March 2009
Genre: Third Person Action/Horror
The one we’ve all been holding our breath for, Resident Evil 5 looks like a genuine fright fest and seems poised to take the series to its highest point yet. Making the availability jump to the 360 for the first time, this will be this one could take over the world. This just looks to be like one freaking horror/action time-waster.

No honorable mention for Wii Sports Resort or Starcraft 2?  Outside the oddball DS puzzle game, those are the only two I see myself buying this year.

I think the Saboteur looks interesting.  I'll wait for some reviews and video.

torvar72 1/16/2009 7:17:35 AM

Saboteur looks cool but the 2 big games on my list are Batman and Resident Evil 5

almostunbiased 1/16/2009 7:41:37 AM

I think Lord of the Rings: Conquest looks pretty cool.  I might get that.

hanso 1/16/2009 9:12:46 AM

Are you kidding me with this list?  It's weak!!  Is this your top 5 or the top 5 everyone is anticipating?

Where in the world are the Halo games that are dropping this year?  I'm not a Halo fan mind you but the biggest franchise of the Xbox has 2 games coming out this year, Halo Wars and Halo: ODST (something like that) and none of them make a top anticipated game list?

Then you left out Killzone 2!!!  A huge title for Sony.

Those 2 games have to be in any most anticipated list.  There is also God of War 3 but I'm not 100% that will be out in 09 so we'll let it slide that it's not on the list.

Personally, I would add Street Fighter 4 & Bionic Commando to this list.

Uh... WHAT?!?!?!?!?! No God of War III? Billy, you so stupid!

I knew I would take some heat for this list but these really are the titles I'm most looking forward to. Starcraft 2 is the one I probably should have given some more space here. To be perfectly honest with you, I'm so Halo'd out that I'm not THAT excited about Halo Wars. With so many top notch games coming out in the next year, it was really hard to narrow it down to 5 but these are my five and I'm stickin to it. :)

almostunbiased 1/16/2009 2:16:14 PM

Dude, to each their own.  You can have your five if you want to.  I think Hanso thought this might be some official list or something from a poll or something.  Me, I'm not a Halo fan either.  Call of Duty: World at War all the way.  That's why I think Saboteur sounds interesting.

hanso 1/16/2009 3:08:59 PM

yea man, it's one thing if it's your personal top 5, then it's cool.  But if it's like for everybody then you gotta put aside some of your feelings and put some stuff you might not want, like Halo for example.  IMaybe a top 10 would've been more fitting.

What you did however, that's like making a top 10 of 2008 and not putting The Dark Knight on it.  It's just wrong i tell ya, wrong!!

Speaking of which, I'm pretty sure Call of Duty 6 will drop in 2009, how can anyone not anticipate that.  It's made by the same studio that did Call of Duy 4 so you know it's gonna be hella sweet.

My personal list

Killzone 2, Street Fighter 4, God of War 3, Fight Night Rd4, Resident Evil 5 and Call of Duty 6
