Top 6 Reasons 2008 Could be the Year of PS3

By: Josh Gordon
Date: Tuesday, January 15, 2008

I believe that 2008 could be the year of the PS3. Microsoft took second place after a monumental pricing blunder by Sony. An arrogant Sony released their new console, as we all know, for $700.00 which forced us to purchase a Blu-Ray player along with their game console whether we wanted to or not. Microsoft intercepted and scored major yardage. A slew of A+ games, their understanding of how important the online component is to gaming and a more down to earth (if not wholly reasonable) price point allowed them to gain a foothold that would have seemed impossible a few years ago.

Last gen’s first place king, Sony is now in third place playing catch-up. The previous generation’s let down, Nintendo, has regained its throne and is now completely dominating. The previous dark horse Microsoft is now in a very healthy and powerful second place.

Nintendo’s domination is so supreme that they’re not even in the battle right now; their problem is trying to keep up with demand. Another ingredient in this tasty deathmatch cake is that it isn’t really even a deathmatch. It’s a fight to dominate but not reign in singularity. That won’t happen. Each player is a supreme powerhouse that isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. Each has the bank accounts, ability and sales figures to be here for a long time to come. That’s a good thing. Contrary to EA, I think console competition is great for gamers.

So, on to the top 6 reasons why I believe 2008 could be the year of PS3.

6. The processing power of the PS3 will finally be unleashed.
When games like Resistance 2 and Killzone 2, are released could it be that we will be blown away beyond our expectations? Will developers finally unleash the cell processor’s artistic delicacies that will warp our fragile little minds? Only time will tell but if it happens, it could turn the tide.

       5. The 360 is too expensive.
If in the coming year most of the best games are going to be released on both systems why wouldn’t a consumer get the PS3?

The PS3 comes with Wi-Fi, a 40GB hard drive, and a Blu-Ray player.

The 360 comes with a 20GB hard drive. No Wi-Fi, no HD DVD player.
Let’s look at the pricing. The 360’s wireless network accessory is $99.00, buying a second 20GB to match Sony’s storage capacity costs $99.00, the external HD-DVD drive is another $179.00. All in all to match the entry level PS3, the 360 will set you back a whopping $726.00. While I applaud Microsoft’s decision to not force you to buy all the pieces all at once, I do take serious umbrage with the pricing of their accessories - a 20GB hard drive for $100.00? When was the last time Bill and the boys perused a Fry’s isle? The price of all of the 360’s aforementioned accessories should be chopped in half. The 360 Elite should be $349.00 and the Premier should be $249.00. The Arcade model should nixed altogether.

  1. Microsoft is going into 2008 with a broken Xbox Live.
Aside from a stellar line-up of 360 exclusives Microsoft’s feather in its cap is Xbox Live, by far the best of the three console’s online components. Unfortunately that feather was plucked over the holidays as the influx of new users crippled the system and rendered the multi-player portion of all these great games virtually useless. Trying to log on to “Call of Duty 4” over the weekend was spotty at best and frustratingly futile at worst. It’s now almost two weeks past the new year and it’s still impossible to log on early evenings and weekends. Didn’t they have someone on the team that thought “Hey we should ramp up XBL capacity for the holidays”? It boggles the mind.
These kinds of glitches should be non-existent. How could Microsoft not have anticipated holiday growth? How is MS still unable to supply the bandwidth needed to keep XBL running smooth? Let me ask that first question again: “HOW COULD THEY NOT HAVE ANTICIPATED HOLIDAY GROWTH?” If this is any kind of indicator about Microsoft’s ability to plan for the future then they may have already lost the battle.

        3. The 360 doesn’t have enough system selling exclusives in the pipeline.
2007 was a banner year for the X360; Bioshock, Mass Effect and Halo III, Gears of War (Xmas 06) among others. PS3 had Ratchet and Clank, Uncharted, MotorStorm and Warhawk.

What’s on the horizon for PS3?
Final Fantasy XIII, Final Fantasy XIII Versus, Metal Gear Solid 4, Killzone 3, Gran Turismo 5, Little Big Planet, Resistance 2

What’s ahead for X360?
Too Human, Ninja Gaiden 2, Fable 2, Halo Wars.

When asked what exclusives are coming in 2008 Microsoft’s VP of Interactive Entertainment Don Mattrick himself only names GTA4. Mr. Mattrick, exclusive content is just that, exclusive content.

With games like Call of Duty 4, Turok, Devil May Cry 4 and Burnout: Paradise City coming out for both systems what does Xbox offer that PS3 doesn’t? (Ok, the best online component of all three systems but is that enough? If those were the games that I wanted to play it wouldn’t justify the higher cost)

Now Ninja Gaiden 2 and Fable 2 are “can’t live without” titles for me but how many others feel the same? How many others that still haven’t bought a system yet?

  1. Microsoft hasn’t conquered it’s hardware issues (OR Screen Freeze is the new RRoD)
I took home my X360 on November 27th. I hadn’t been that happy or excited about something I owned since I was given a Slingerland drum set by my dad when I was fourteen.

On Jan 10th 2008 I returned my X360 to Best Buy. Screen Freeze. My system was a 65nm falcon system. Lot # 742, MFG Date: 10-07,
175W power supply. I was naively shocked. I thought MS had figured out the error of its ways and fixed its hardware issues. I just don’t get it. I just don’t get it. Two years later and they still can’t produce a machine that works. I’m THIS far away from using my Best Buy credit (they’re all out of Xbox’s) to get a PS3. I can sell my 360 games and get CoD4 and Ratchet & Clank. I’ll get a shiny new Blu-Ray player out of it and a hip load of movies to watch on it.

And another thing! Despite my catchy title, screen freeze has been going on for awhile. There are literally thousands of postings on it on the official XBOX forums alone. And while we’re at it, what about the people that are on their 4th or 5th console? If you can’t fix it the first time, they should get a brand spanking new console. It’s past reaching the point of absurdity.

Mr. Gates told the BBC at CES that XB360 will become the most reliable system on the market. BWAHAHAHA!

If Mr. Gates knows something we don’t I wish he’d let us in on the secret.

1. Overconfidence
Look what happened to Sony. You HAVE to be cocky to sell a game system for $700.00 (I don’t care WHAT it does!). Sony went into this gen as king of the hill. Even for the head-start the 360 had, everyone was holding their breath for the PS3. Nobody thought Sony could be toppled, not until they announced the cost of the PS3. With Microsoft keeping relatively low key so far for 2008 it seems that arrogance might have changed hands with the changing of the New Year.  In a great interview with MSNBC’s gaming editor Kristin Kalning, Don Mattrick, senior VP of Microsoft Interactive Entertainment stated that the 360’s big plans for 2008 is GTA4 (Huh?). Here’s what he says

KK: Tracking ahead to exclusives for next year, what does Microsoft have on tap?

DM: There’s a collection of exclusive and third-party hits, and we’re going to have a similar year to what we’ve enjoyed in 2007... We’re excited about “Grand Theft Auto [IV],” not only because it’s a great title, but there’s multi-play and downloadable content that consumers will only be able to get on 360.  That’s a huge win. Arguably that title has the potential to be the “Halo” equivalent in calendar year 2008 in terms of number-one title revenue unit.

WHAT? As I stated earlier GTA4 isn’t an exclusive. He totally evaded the actual question. Just because it’s got exclusive downloadable content doesn’t mean it’s an exclusive game. He couldn’t name ANYTHING else? That just isn’t a very exciting announcement. And besides, I just can’t see GTA4 as another Halo 3 for the 360; it’s coming out on two major consoles. GTA4 is without a doubt a system seller of the highest order. It could surpass Halo 3 on both systems combined (although I don’t know if as many moms are going to buy it for their kids). If the only game I really cared about was GTA4 what system do you think I’m going to buy it on? PS3. I wouldn’t even have to think twice about that one. The allure of getting a free Blu-Ray player packed in with my game system is too sexy to pass up. Also, there are no hardware reliability issues to worry about with the PS3.

So if GTA4 is the only game Mr. Mattrick can name when asked about future of exclusives for the 360 what does that say for the future of the 360 library?

It’s a general overconfidence and lack of self-awareness like this that toppled Sony from the top and could do the same to Microsoft.

However it turns out it will no doubt be a fascinating game to watch. Let’s just hope us gamers aren’t too badly harmed in the process.

I hate to say it, but I humbly agree with this assessment. With high definition dvd onfigurations being a major issue in which system I back... I as of late have been feeling like I made a bad decision in choosing the Xbox 360. I love the games and hd-dvd to death... but with the PS3 getting cheaper and Blu-Ray becoming more and more mainstream (in the high def dept. at least), I might be migrating sometime in the near future.

Guess my tax refund if already spoken for! lol.

I agree with everything you said. I had a 360 and a PS3 but I sold my 360 a week ago because there is no reason to keep it all the games I want are PS3 exclusives or multi platform. I am using my PS3 as a media center and I love it I was using my 360 but I love the interface on the PS3 I can browse othe movies and shows I have stored on my Computer while I am watching something else all with no ethernet just wireless. Add free online and you got something better than Yoohoo.

I had a long response, but lost it.

I'd argue the PS3 is playing catch-up, so it would need to do more than just have a few more in one year - it'd need to have a lot more.

I think Nintendo will stay in the lead.

I think Sony will regain some of it's market share, but I don't think it's a foregone conclusion either way. I'd lean that Sony still loses out this year.

Checking this sites:
http://www.gameinformer.com/News/Story/200712/N07.1220.1104.32694.htm
http://www.pcworld.ca/news/column/c234d39a0a01040800397d4ee761a56c/pg1.htm (PS3 lists 1 exclusive, granted the number one, but that's not enough to steal the lead)

I'd add Infinite Undiscovery, Civilization: Revolution(not exclusive), Fallout 3 (not exclusive), Lost Odyssey, Star Wars: Force Unleashed (not exclusive), Smash Bros. Brawl (Wii), Resident Evil 5 (not exclusive), Mercenaries 2 (not exclusive), Splinter Cell: Conviction to the "great games" coming out in 2008 . . . 3 of which are 360 exclusives

and then there are games that no one knows if they'll be big hits or no. . .

Really too early to call this.

Jet Fa--err, I mean Lag; why not call this "Top 6 reasons why the PS3 will own the Xbox360". What's up with you saying "free" bluray dude? Is that the pitch you're trying to sell for this piece? The PS3 had its share of hardware problems too, not anywhere near 360 numbers though. Pricing is still to high for most gamers, some of which have HD/Blu-ray at home and don't need the hefty price tag. For the value compared to other systems, I'm pretty sure the PS3 won't be the winner next year. Oh and by the way, when I mean 'systems', I mean all consoles including the Wii. Did you only get payed to attack MS for this one or what? Or are you saving the Wii bashing version for another site/paycheck?
The coming year will be a dry one for the 360 no doubt. Like Lag-boy said, there are only a few exclusive titles that are a must have. The PS3 has a meatier lineup with a lot of pretty games. Sony needs to entice more gamers with the Playstation mainstays like Metal Gear and Final Fantasy. With the price tag still being a tad on the expensive side, they might cut the price down the road again...just like they were adding the rumble to the Six-Axis pad right? Hee hee. With the PSP outselling the PS3 last year, I'm not going to hold my breath for them to take back their thrown. Of the big three Nintendo will still be on top next year simply because of the demand, then the PS3 will probably edge out the 360 with all its 1st-exclusive titles. Hell, who knows, the PSP might even outsell the PS3 next year as well, you never know.

Yeah, I can see the Wii dominating both. But as far as the PS3 dominating the 360? Forget about it. I don't even own a 360 or PS3 yet. (I'm waiting for my free PS3 from Sony for buying a Bravia) and the only redeeming quality of the the PS3 over the XBox 360 is that it has a built in Blu-Ray player and that's the ONLY reason I'm not whacking it on eBay. I've done all the research and comparing and the 'Box totally dominates the PS3.

Microsoft was smart by NOT building a HD-DVD into the 'Box and not having to depend on it. It was simply an accessory to the 'Box, nothing more. The PS3 depends on it.

Microsoft knows that lossless downloading and streaming is the way of the future. Blu-Ray will be around for about 5 years. What if Blu-Ray was the losing format? Sure you could play PS3 Games what else?

Wi-Fi: Stupid on MS's part but I can whack a non-MS receiver onto the 'Box easily. How much did this add to the price of a PS3?

Games: Unleash the power of the PS3? Give me a break. Developers have already said it is more expensive and more difficult to do PS3 Games over 360 Games. Plus, 360 Games are better quality and offer higher and better resolution. Microsoft is concentrating on the gaming world in a big way, do you really think they would let their lead slip?

Storage: at the moment you can only whack a 250gb Labtop HDD into the PS3. With the Box you can connect any size external HDD via USB. You can make them yourself.

Games: The PS3 game list is deplorable. PS3 has some major catching up to do in both quality and quantity. In the majority of comparisons of the same game the quality of the 360 game has dominated.

Price: nuff said.

Backwards Compatibility: You can't even play the multitude of PS2 Games on the PS3 unless you have the 60 or 80 gb verson. This itself is deplorable and insulting considering what the PS2 did for Sony's fanbase. Sure you can keep your PS2 in standby but why should you? And if you own a Home Theater System, a Wii, '360 and PS3, who needs another console taking up space? Unbelievable.

All of my gaming geek friends that were PS Hardcores, because of how great the PS2 was and continues to be, are majorly disappointed with the PS3 and migrated to the 'Box instead. Even if they own both, for what system will they buy the game for first?

I sincerely hope that the PS3 makes a major comeback this year since I have one coming in the mail, but I don't like their chances. I'm not a Microsoft die hard and have been objective while researching both. Microsoft has an eye on the future for Multimedia and Gaming in a big way. I could easily build a Media Center PC for my home theater but I get the feeling I don't have to when I buy my Xbox 360.

Since I haven't bought my Xbox 360 yet and I only listed a couple of reasons for the 'Box above, I welcome some more redeeming qualities of the PS3 that I may help me change my position.

This article is called "Top 6 Reasons 2008 Could be the Year of PS3", but what the author really should have named it is "The Top Reasons Why I Think Microsoft Will Lose to the PS3". I mean cmon...five out of the six bullet-points are bashes against Microsoft rather than being valid points about what's positive about the PS3. This author obviously has a chip on his shoulder.

Honestly, the PS3 has some serious catching up to do. With all the amazing games that the XBox 360 released in 2007, I can't even think of a single exclusive game that's worth buying the PS3 for (sorry bud...but games like Ratchet and Clank and Resistence aren't worthy enough in my opinion).

Maybe the tides will turn this year when games like Metal Gear Solid 4 and Gran Turismo 5 come out for the PS3, who knows. But right now, all I use my PS3 for is to play blu-ray movies, as there simply isn't any exclusive PS3 games worth buying right now. And after a year of the PS3 being on the market, that's actually pretty sad.

I have to agree. HD DVD is on a long ride off a very short pier. When Warner opted for Blu-ray the writing was on the wall. Here's the main reason I've chosen Blu-ray: of the two standards, Blu-ray's significantly larger memory capacity means that applications such as movies and, in particular, games have room to grow into. Although there is an initial cost to doing this, in the long run it saves money because nobody has to invent a new standard with more memory for, hopefully, a very long time.

Necronomitron • Jan 15, 2008, 04:49am •
Sony didn't "force" a BR player into the price of the PS3. It was the technology they chose, for obvious reasons, to format their games. The fact that the PS3 plays BR movies is secondary to the fact that it plays BR games.

HudsonTaco • Jan 15, 2008, 05:55am •
How is the PS3 more expensive when it is the same price as 360 with more features? How is a game being not exclusive a benifit for 360? I don't think the 360 is a peice of crap but its dominace over the PS3 will be cut down significantly this year and PS3 will be the Tortise to 360's Hare. Developer are already starting to shift development over to PS3 cause they find its easier to port to 360 than to PS3 and weather anyone belives it or not the PS3 is capable of better graphics than the 360. At the bare minimum the race will be the far closer by xmas 08. Mark my words 2007 was the last year of 360 dominace.
Oh and digital DL for movies is becoming more popular but DVd's and blueray will be around longer than 5 years from now. most people still want a hard copy of thier movie not one stored on a HD. MP3's have been popular for 10years and yet there is still a huge market for CD's. its gonna take alot longer for the digital downloads to take over I think 10years is even optimistic.

This by no means is an insult to all you console players, but my solution to the "console wars" is PC Gaming. Best gaming platform around and no HD TV can beat the detail levels found in flat panel monitors! With resolutions as high as 2590 x 1960, no TV on the market could touch it! And the games are just plain better, period. But, that's probably not an ideal solution for many of you, but it's the way I see it. I'll never buy another console again. Ever. My PC rocks so much over game consoles, and, as you all know since you are on here, you can do so much more with a PC than a game console as well.
