Top Maniacal Rumors: Brolin Hex, Gosling's Lantern and Deadpool Reynolds

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, October 10, 2008

It’s time for another edition of Mania’s Most Maniacal Rumors, where we blow the lid off the week’s juiciest gossip and hush-hush industry whispers.
If you have a rumor you want to contribute, we’re all ears. Just send it to jarrod@mania.com..

Josh Brolin is the new Jonah Hex?
Rumor: The hottest rumor of the week is the update that Thomas Jane may not be getting what he wanted due to the fact that No Country for Old Men’s Josh Brolin has won the gig instead.
Link: Hollywood Elsewhere
Overview: As fellow Editor Rob Worley says here, Brolin’s people are saying that he is “not attached” but Wells in the link above suggests that the actor is indeed in the top running for the gig. Contributing to the story is that Crank directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor are distancing the storyline from the Western aspect and making it modern age, just a year after the academy nominated Brolin’s western-type tale from the Coen brothers.

300 Follow Up is a Sequel, not a Prequel?

Rumor: Just a few weeks after Gerard Butler says he can’t see his character coming back for a prequel, director Zack Snyder has come into the online web rumor vine by saying that won’t be a problem and saying it will be a sequel to Frank Miller’s comic.

Source: IESB
Mania Verdict: Going by what Snyder is saying here, there is nothing to dispute the sequel rumor. It seems Miller is planning a follow-up where 300 left off for audiences.

Ford Ready to Come Back to Indiana Jones 5?

Rumor: It took nearly 20 years for the fourth film to hit theaters after Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Some reports earlier this year suggested that Ford was out if it took that long again. Apparently, from the latest report, it seems that Ford is in fact in for another go if Lucas and Spielberg agree to a story and he’s okay with it as well.

Source: Los Angeles Times
Mania Verdict: Ford has always said that he is willing to return to this iconic character that he loves so much. If the right tale comes along and it comes along soon, he’ll jump aboard as he suggests below.
"It's crazy but great," the 66-year-old Ford said. "George is in think mode right now. It's automatic, really, we did well with the last one and with that having done well and been a positive experience, it's not surprising that some people want to do it again.”

Ryan Gosling is the New Green Lantern?

Source: Latino Review
Mania Verdict: As El Mayimbe suggests in the link above, the age does fit here. Ryan is 27 and the somewhat praised script calls for a 27 year old actor. But remember Maniacs, Ryan was also connected with comic films of the past, namely Justice League. Nothing came out of that since the film fell into development hell again. It could happen again here.

Kevin Spacey Back as Lex Luthor in Superman Sequel?

Rumor: Despite the fact that Superman: Man of Steel seems to be up in the air on whether Bryan Singer and leading star Brandon Routh comes back, co-star Kevin Spacey seems to think he’s coming back as Lex Luthor.

Source: Belfast Telegraph
Mania Verdict: Kevin may be coming late in the game here. He is actually signed on for another film after meeting with Singer last year but since then, Warner Bros. executives have been elusive what direction they’re taking with Superman. If they’re rebooting it, it’s highly unlikely that they will keep Spacey as Lex. It’s more likely they’ll insert him into another WB project instead. If Singer and Routh return, this could end up true.

A Daredevil Remake on the Horizon for Fox?

Rumor: Five years ago, The Hulk came to theaters for Universal Pictures and director Ang Lee. The studio rebooted the franchise in 2008. Now, the latest rumor suggests that 20th Century Fox is thinking of the same with their 2003 Daredevil film.

Source: IESB
Mania Verdict: Despite the box office not being much different between the two different Hulk versions, it seems that 20th Century Fox is thinking of the same thing with their Daredevil franchise. Here’s what Tom Rothman had to say to Robert Sanchez.
"A 'Daredevil,' to use your words, reboot, is something we are thinking very seriously about," Rothman said. "We've got all the rights. And yes, I think that the thing the 'Hulk' showed although, it did what it did, is that it is possible, that if you really do it right the audience will give you a second chance. That it is possible. And I think that you see that when they did 'Batman Begins,' the first Nolan movie, that you can have made some mistakes along the way or movies that the audience wasn't that crazy about and then given the proper amount of time and the right creative vision behind it, you can, to use your word, reboot ... it needs a visionary at the level that Chris Nolan was. It needs someone, it needs a director, honestly, who has a genuine vision. What we wouldn't do is just do it for the sake of doing it. Right? What we try to do is to get a creative engine for it, that really had a great vision for it, that's what we would look for."

Ryan Reynolds Leading a Deadpool Spin-off?

Rumor: Long before X-Men Origins: Wolverine even hits theaters, 20th Century Fox and producers are churning the rumor mill with thoughts that Ryan could be leading his Deadpool character onto a franchise of its own.

Source: SHH
Mania Verdict: Just a few months ago, 20th Century Fox executives were hesitant on green lighting any more spin-offs until Wolverine hits theaters next May. Perhaps, a change of policy came since then because here’s what producer Lauren Schuler Donner had to say on it.
"Ryan Reynolds is playing Deadpool," Donner said. "He plays Wade Wilson." So ... spin off? "I hope so. I really hope so. He's so good at it." She also speaks briefly about the "Wolverine" movie.”

Hex: Don't know enough about it to really care.. I like Tom Jane. I like Josh Brolin.

GL: I like Gosling as Hal/GL although I can also see him as DD if they do infact reboot. Is Berrlanti(spelling?) still going to direct GL? aintitcool is reporting that there's no director attatched to this project.

Indy 5: No fathers, sons or exgirlfriends. Just give us a stand alone story, have L. Kasdan write it and use 75% less CGI.

Superman/Lex: Whatever they do it's gotta be better than SR.

Deadpool: Really?

On a side note I abso-fucking-lutely hate working nights

God I hope Lucas and the Berg watch Southpark this week to get a feeling what the fans felt.

Deadpool feels right with Ryan so far.

Daredevil does not need a relaunch. Just move forward. Plenty of stories to choose from for sequel. I guess it does not matter who plays DD, I thought Ben A did good job however.

300 sequel now? I liked the rumor about 300,000! title. Nothing will ever touch 300 so go nuts producers.

Gosling has a weird looking face. Fantastic Four ain't getting no more movies, Chris Evans = Hal Jordan. Dude is 27 yrs, he can pull off that hot shot attitude and he's more recognizable than Gosling.

I would like to see another Indy Movie, I didn't hate the last one but it didn't exactly knock it out of the park. I thought it started out pretty well. Then kind of really went downhill once they left the country. If they can make a better sequel go for it, if not let indy retire. Definetly ditch the mutt and Marion. I love Karen Allen but what did she do in this last movie? Shia was okay, when he wasn't swingin.

I would love to see Spacey as Lex Luthor again. That man could take luthor to a whole new level, If they can find something more original for him to do other than genocidal real estate tycoon.

Daredevil. Why reboot? I agree with what someone said earlier, just find something else for him to do. By the time they make it, it will probably be like a whole new franchise anyway.

Deadpool? OH YEAH!!

They raped Indiana Jones! They goddamn raped Indiana Jones! How can any of you stand there and act like it didn't happen? And now they're talking about doing it again? You want to see that happen again, DarkXid? What kind of a sick frak are you?

Bryzarro • Oct 10, 2008, 07:43am •
I'm all for more Indy...even with Shia. He's growing on me after many viewings of Transformers with my 4 year old and a decent flick in Eagle Eye.

Deadpool: I love Reynolds and I think he's going to do great in the Wolvie movie. So I would support a Deadpool movie with him. I think he is built for these types of roles.

Spacey as Luthor: Good. Get this movie made one way or another.

Daredevil Remake: Sequel not re-make. I personally loved the first and Affleck did great. It's been 5 going on 6 years just make the sequel and ramp up the story.

GL: I say go with Gosling. More depth and acting skill.

Hanso: I think Evans has been on screen more latley but Gosling has way better roles than Evans and I don't think Evans is more popular than Gosling. Alot of people know Gosling.

hanso • Oct 10, 2008, 08:17am •
Nah Bryzarro, Evans has been in 2 Fantastic Four movies that alone should make him more popular to the masses than Gosling who has mainly done smaller movies although he was in the Notebook who every chic has seen and was nominated for an Oscar if I remember correctly due to Half Nelson. Not many people saw Half Nelson though. So I would give the edge if there is any to Evans in terms of more people knowing about him. Don't get me wrong, I like Gosling, he's a good actor. It's just he has a weird looking face and I have a hard time picturing him as Hal Jordan. I thought he would be a better Batman for the Justice League movie since he'd probably show up more with the cape & cowl than as Bruce Wayne.
Probably don't matter with Evans anyway, he's already Johnny Storm I doubt they would use him for another super hero.

Rest of the rumors.

1. Good I guess, don't care about it.
2. Since it's gonna take place between the events of 300, the movie is a prequel & a sequel? Snyder don't do this shit, go speak to Sony and get God of War. If Butler wants to be a Spartan again, cast him as Kratos. Please, I beg of you, take it away from Ratner!!!!!!!!
3. Of course there will be another one, last one made to much money to just let it die. Lucas give control to Spielberg and it's all good.
4. Please no Kevin Spacey. If they are gonna reboot the franchise that means recast, not bring some of the players from the last film.
5. They should start over with Daredevil but more along the lines of Hulk than an actual starting over. Basically just recast, give it a different tone and pick up the story where the last one left off. That way they can use elements of the "Born Again" storyline where Kingpin screws Murdock's life over.
6. Good I guess.

Chris Evans, really Hanso?

hanso • Oct 10, 2008, 08:59am •
Yea man. He fits the age group, has the body build for it, he ain't a midget and can let his hair grow a bit to get the Hal look. He's done action, some comedy. I think he could pull it off.
Gosling's a better actor though and Im sure he can build up but his face is weird. That's why I can't picture him. He kinda looks like he's high.

VIOlator • Oct 10, 2008, 09:15am •
Yea... he's high off his power! I honestly think Gosling would have a more serious demeanor and tone as the GL. Chris Evans would be a great 2nd pick though. It's just that he has that constant non-serious-goofiness about him I cant shake for the GL role... if ya'll know what i mean.

Gerard Butler had a Fantastic Opera-like Glorious-Victorious Death in 300 and should not return. That would be like having Marlon Brando come in as a different character in Godfather 2. Ya dig???

Has ANYONE seen Deadpool with his mask on yet?? that is like the only thing im looking forward to in "Wolverine". hehe.
