Top Maniacal Rumors: Connor Reunion, Lethal Sequel and Gladiator America

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, August 08, 2008

It’s time for another edition of Mania’s Most Maniacal Rumors, where we blow the lid off the week’s juiciest gossip and hush-hush industry whispers.
If you have a rumor you want to contribute, we’re all ears. Just send it to jarrod@mania.com.

Linda Hamilton is Returning for Terminator Salvation Trilogy?
Rumor: Another wild rumor popped up stating that Linda Hamilton has agreed to a deal with Warner Bros. and the producers of the upcoming Terminator Salvation trilogy, reliving her original role of Sarah Connor, the mother of John (Christian Bale). Her scenes are rumored to be flashbacks.
Source: Pause.com
Mania Verdict: MAYBE---We’re definitely leaning toward false here due to the fact that it seems Warner Bros. and director McG want to take it a different direction. Still, there have been rumors of Arnie doing a cameo so it could make sense that the producers would want to show Linda in some flashbacks as an added reference to the original film.

Shane Black Has Penned Lethal Weapon 5?

Rumor: Despite getting a send-off at the end of Lethal Weapon 4, Murtaugh and Riggs may be back gain as the original screenwriter Shane Black has reportedly penned a screenplay for a Lethal Weapon 5 with his own version of good bye.

Source: TrackingB
Mania Verdict: TRUE---We’re going with true here because the characters were Shane Black’s to begin with. He was not happy with the third and fourth installments in which he had no control over the writing duties. It would make sense that he would want to come back and give his own goodbye to the characters.

Lexi Alexander Taken off Punisher: War Zone?

Rumor: It seems that director Lexi Alexander’s willingness to keep us all updated continually for the upcoming adaptation of Punisher: War Zone may have got her in hot water with Lionsgate. Enough so that they had some arguments and the director was eventually let go from the post-production part of it.

Source: Comic Book Movie
Mania Verdict: TRUE---Lexi Alexander was a no show at the SDCC and her blog has wiped away all Punisher: War Zone updates, leaning credence to this rumor. Still, this shouldn’t cause any problems for the status of the film. Alexander has already wrapped production for the sequel and reportedly, this change just means a new post production crew and a new composer.

Jason Statham Interested in Being the Next Daredevil?

Rumor: While Ben Affleck played the comic hero in the 2003 adaptation and it did gross $179.1 mil worldwide on a budget of $78 mil, there has been no follow ups and it was thought a one shot deal. At this year’s SDCC, that didn’t stop people from asking Jason Statham if he would do the role and he said he would love to do it while sharing a drink with Frank Miller.

Source: Los Angeles Times
Mania Verdict: TRUE---Here’s what Statham had to say on the project.
"Absolutely, just give me the chance, I would love to be Daredevil. Forget Bullseye, I want to be Daredevil!"
Frank Miller nodded. "I think he should be Daredevil too."

Justice League Begins Filming Next Year?

Rumor: Last summer was teaming with Justice League rumors left and write but the WGA strike and subsequent script polishing has set the production back to 2011. The latest rumor directly from director George Miller’s mouth says that production will begin sometime in 2009, setting the way for a 2 year shoot and post-production schedule.

Source: News.com.au
Mania Verdict: TRUE---It makes sense that Warner Bros. and director Miller will want plenty of time for post production work for this upcoming teaming of DC superheroes. There’s likely to be a lot of visual work needed for the final cut.

Megatron Returns as a Tank in Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen?

Rumor: We know of last week’s rumor that “The Fallen” is actually an upcoming enemy for the autobots, taken from the property’s comic book material. Now, it seems that the big baddie himself Megatron will be returning, albeit under a different look then the gun we normally see him as in the cartoons and the flying jet we saw him in the original film.

Source: CHUD
Mania Verdict: TRUE---We’ll agree with Devin here in the sense that Megatron was a tank in Transformers Generation 2 comic material and I don’t think anyone thought the character was truly gone from the movies. We’ll know for sure if this is true on June 26, 2009.

Mike "Titan" O'Hearn Up for Captain America and Conan?

Rumor: And the possible Captain America casting choices continue to spurn in rumor land. The latest one has “American Gladiator” Mike O’Hearn up for the role of Captain America or the upcoming remake of Conan the Barbarian.

Source: Slashfilm
Mania Verdict: TRUE---He is fit enough for the roles so we’re not doubting that he is “up for the role”. As to whether he will get either role, we have our doubts. Marvel will likely get someone who audiences may know and there have been A-listers up for the role of Captain America. We shall see soon whether the studio goes for an unknown or an A-list actor. If one of these rumors were to be true, we would lean towards O'Hearn playing Conan rather than the Captain.

Superman Villain is Up for Grabs?

Rumor: It seems that Bryan Singer is still attached to direct the next Superman, a film reportedly supposed to include more action and less romance. The latest report, which debunked all the director change reports, has also said that the studio is taking pitches on which villain Superman should go up against.

Source: Variety
Mania Verdict: TRUE---The biggest issue with Superman is finding a good credible villain for the superhero. It makes sense that the studio wants everyone’s input on who should keep Supes on his toes in the sequel to Superman Returns.

I already talked about 1, 2, and 5, but that Punisher War Zone rumor is pretty fucked up if it is in deed true. Its not like Lexi was giving away any huge secrets. Micheal Bay is doing the same damn thing and his movie isn`t even half way done. Tim Story did it. Jon Favreau posted stuff about Iron Man on his MySpace blog all the time. I don`t see what Lionsgate`s problem was. I mean she directed the whole thing and now for them to take her off post production duties is pretty fucked up. Shame on you Lionsgate!
I don`t know about anyone else, but for the life of me, I can't see Jason Statham as Daredevil. He might be able to pull off the Daredevil part but I can`t see him as Matt Murdock. I honestly thought Affleck did a pretty good job, character wise. Statham would actually be a better Bullseye or other villain.
Well, Megatron coming back in a new form makes sense if they were going to bring him back. I`d still love to see him as a gun with Soundwave blasting away but realistically that`s not going to happen, so a tank will do.
I really hope Marvel doesn`t make the mistake of letting Mike O`Hearn don the Captain America uniform. He has the body for it but I almost feel he is too big. He reminds me more of U.S.Agent. They really need to get an A-lister or when the Avengers come around it won`t look right. RDJ, Ed Norton, whomever is playing Thor and Ant-Man and Mike O`Hearn? I think not. He could be a really good Conan though.
One name people. DARKSEID!

I'm with you ponyboy76. Lexi has been fantastic with her blogs and updates. Most of the people out there would have sniffed with derision at the thought of another Punisher film, but her openness has generated a fair bit of interest in it.

She obviously has great passion for her work and it's a real shame that some stiff-necked suits in Lionsgate don't share the same passion and enthusiasm.

Well, every news source I have read so far confirms that Lexi has been kicked off Punisher: War Zone. I went to her blog and there is absolutely nothing about the movie but she goes on to talk about how life has it ups and downs and moving passed certain situations. It sucks for her, but I am also worried about the movie because apparently Lionsgate is going to tweak her cut of the film. I`m not sure if they are going to make it less violent or what? They also got rid of the composer and decided to insert lots of thrash metal into the movie which I think is a big mistake. I have a feeling they are just going to go with loud and obnoxious because they think that its what we want for that type of movie. I love metal, but I`d like some decent stuff on this score. The last Punisher actually had a pretty damn good soundtrack. Slipknot, Chevelle, Seether. It wasn't too hard but it served its purpose. Lionsgits are going to screw this up. I just know it.

Superman villain should be Doomsday with a 2nd choice for Brainic or both with Brainic the mastermind behind Doomsday.

Cap America probably has to be a smaller build than Titan but as Conan he could do a good job.

Lexi getting the shaft for updates is Bullshit! The movie is going to need all the word of mouth as it is to make good BO.

Megatron as a tank is a great direction if not a gun. Hopefully Frank Welker will get the role this time. Don't forget to post on his myspace.

Captain America or Conan? They need a top-notch actor who spends a year bulking up. Not a bulked up guy with minimal acting experience. And as for O'Hearn playing Conan: his face is simply too soft and feminine for such a character. Robert E. Howard would scoff at such a notion.

Maybe I'm out of the loop, but when was megatron normally a jet in the cartoons?

Linda Hamilton should not degrade herself by showing up in this new terminator trilogy. She stepped off of 3 because she didn't agree with the direction her character was going (principals, you can appreciate that), but to come back for flashbacks that serve only to tie one series of films to the previous?

I can definitely see mike o'hearn as conan. After all, the last guy who played him on the big screen couldn't act either. But putting a no-talent muscle whore as Cap'n America? It's enough to make a guy swear off marvel.

Superman should have two villains. He should be fighting both alcoholism and illiteracy. Then set it up so that he's gradually getting bigger throughout the movie, so at the end they set up the next flick where he battles obesity. Then setup a spin off called "Lois" where Ms. Lane takes the fight with superman to court for being a deadbeat dad.

No Linda Hamilton, she's 2 old. Yes to Sarah Connor in flashbacks.

I guess, bring back Pesci for some bits and stay away from turning into a comedy. Back to it's roots for Lethal Weapon 5.

That's what this chic gets for putting out that crap first still of the Punisher looking like like Steven Segal & that gay ass chandalier scene from the trailer. Who cares the chic is gone, nothing from the trailer screamed she was doing a good job anyway except for the look of Punisher.

Please no. Strataham go do something else, stay away.

I guess this means the final cast is set. Fuck me sideways. Arnie Hammer, DJ Controna WTF!!!!??? Here's hoping the script is as good as the rumor sounds.

Megatron, Transformers 2? Couldn't care less, I'll go see it regardless besides he was a plane in the last one when he was supposed to be a Gun right?

Mike Ohearn needs to stick to American Gladiators and focus his energy in tapping Gina Caron instead of being concerned with Cap. America & Hercules. No way Marvel picks this fool for Cap. Can you imagine a cast that already has Downey Jr & Norton being lead by this guy? Laughable. They need a real actor, not necessarily bigger name than Downey & Norton, but certainly someone that can hold his own with those cats.

Damn, why can't Singer just go away from Superman. How bout WB takes pitches on new directors instead of villains!!!!!!!?

1. Wouldn’t mind Linda in Salvation. Not sure how she’s looking right now so I ain’t sure how it will play out but it would be nice to see here as Sarah again. She deserves to work dammit and this is an appropriate place.

2. Bring it and let Black direct

3. WTF?!?!?! There’s something else going on here. They did not fire her for her blogging. That’s a load of bullshit. Like what I had been seeing and hearing so far but this is a bit distressing. Studio suit gonna give us the final cut and score? That always works out, no? This is a damn shame.

4. No. I too like Affleck. I’d actually love to see an outright sequel to the last one with a better script. Had absolutely no problem with Ben’s performance as Matt or Daredevil. Pick someone else Statham.

5. Can we get some confirmation on the casting? That’s been my only problem with this but it is a HUGE freakin’ problem. Git yo heads out yo asses DC/WB. Did you not just see Dark Knight?

6. I hope Optimus is a Tire Pressure Gauge in this one

7. Don’t know enough about O’Hearn to really give an informed opinion but the American Gladiator ties don’t make me happy. This guy’s gonna lead RDJ & Norton?

8. *sigh* All this time and still no clue? Please pass the torch Singer. TDK has changed things. Go make your Robotech thingee.

9. hanso, surely you don’t mean a return from “Him”?
