Top Maniacal Rumors of the Week

Top Maniacal Rumors: Iron Cheap, Raimi's Return & Beachy Turok

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, June 13, 2008

It’s time for another edition of Mania’s Most Maniacal Rumors, where we blow the lid off the week’s juiciest gossip and hush-hush industry whispers.

If you have a rumor you want to contribute, we’re all ears. Just send it to jarrod@mania.com.

Marvel Too Cheap to Retain Favreau for Iron Man 2?

Rumor: For weeks now, we’ve been discussing the already planned sequel to last month’s smash hit Iron Man. All the actors are onboard but director Jon Favreau hasn’t signed on yet, something which is baffling a lot of fans and insiders. According to the latest rumor, Favreau isn’t signed on because Marvel isn’t paying up.

Source: IESB

Mania Verdict: TRUE—Unfortunately, numerous sources are saying that negotiations between Favreau and Marvel are not going well. Favreau himself said something similar in his MySpace forums this week which has many wondering if you can even call them “negotiations”.

It’s been five weeks since the one and only phone call my reps have gotten from Marvel. I know their hands are full with the Hulk and I’m sure they will get into it shortly, as they tell me they intend to. I ran into the Marvel guys at the Hulk premiere and everyone sounded eager to get to work on IM2.

I am concerned, however, about the announced release date of April 2010. Neither Robert nor I were consulted about this and we are both concerned about how realistic the date is in light of the fact that we have no script, story or even writers hired yet.

Sam Raimi Returning for Spider-Man 4?

Director Sam Raimi on the set of SPIDER-MAN 3(2007).

Rumor: After months of numerous reports saying otherwise, the latest on the vine suggests that director Sam Raimi may be open to leading the next Spider-Man film for Sony.

Source: SHH

Mania Verdict: MAYBE—We would love to say true here but Sam has a lot of projects on the horizon and each Spider-Man film takes 2-3 years away from him. It’s why he was so absolute last summer in saying he would executive produce a sequel but not likely direct it. Perhaps, the year off has changed his mind but any final outcome depends on Sony’s schedule aligning with Raimi’s.

BSG’s Michael Rymer Directing the Witchblade Movie?

First teaser poster for WITCHBLADE(2008).

Rumor: Executive producer-director Michael Rymer (Battlestar Galactica, Queen of the Damned) was said to be in charge of adapting Top Cow’s comic Witchblade to the big screen.

Source: B-D

Mania Verdict: TRUE—Since the rumor, numerous sources have confirmed he’s in charge of directing the project, based on a screenplay by Everett De Roche. You can check out the first teaser poster above.

Avengers Hero Appears in the Incredible Hulk?

The Hulk in THE INCREDIBLE HULK (2008).

Rumor: With the Incredible Hulk hitting theaters today, you will confirm this bit of spoiler-minded cameo appearances appear in the film. In a video interview with director Louis Leterrier, he hints that director Jon Favreau—who led Iron Man—wasn’t the only one placing Avenger storylines in these latest comic movies.

Mania Verdict: TRUE—You can watch the video below, the spoiler is around the 3:00 minute mark.

Adam Beach Leads New Live-Action Turok Movie?

Turok Rocks in TUROK:SON OF STONE(2008).

Rumor: Actor Adam Beach, who recently voiced the iconic comic/video game character, in the animated movie Turok: Son of Stone has made headlines this week by suggesting that a live action version is on the horizon and he needs to “beef up”.

Source: MTV

Mania Verdict: TRUE—For years, there have been rumors of a possible live-action version of the Turok character on the horizon. With the new animated DVD selling well and a new sequel hitting PS3 and Xbox 360, it’s not unreasonable to see a live-action version hitting theaters soon. The question remains whether Adam Beach will keep the role.

1) Maybe all my comments recently about Marvel finally doing things right were a bit premature... Favreau is a MUST for Iron Man 2 and a SHOULD BE for Avengers... How Marvel can lowball/stonewall/cold shoulder him is completely beyond me. He is the single biggest reason for Iron Man's success... He directed it, ensured it stayed true to character and canon, and cast the ultra perfect choice as Stark... He has to be back for the next one. Period.

2) Whatever. I love Spiderman, but I hate Toby McGuire and Kirsten Dunst, and I'm not sold on Raimi after what he did in Spidey 2 and 3. Rejuvenate the franchise with new blood across the board.

3) Don't know much about Witchblade, other than the fact that it was turned into a terrible TNT show.

4) It was my understanding that Cap's presence was limited to the Arctic scenes, and that those scenes were cut, so it's odd that Leterrier made that comment. I just got back from seeing the midnight showing of The Hulk and I sure didn't notice anything (other than the Super Soldier serum, of course)

5) A Turok movie would be a Jurassic Park movie on steroids... So basically count me in... Unless of course they fool me into thinking the movie is over and then suddenly we're in San Diego with a T-Rex on the loose.

As far as Marvel being too cheap, it sounds more like they are too stupid. Favreau delivered what they wanted in spades and now when it comes down to resigning him so he could do it again, they are sweating the almighty dollar. Its ridiculous! If they don't resign him they are making a huge mistake. And just when I thought Marvel were starting to make intelligent decisions.Kind of reminds me of the New Line and Peter Jackson issue.
I already talked about Raimi directing Spidey 4. I don't really have a problem with it as long as the studio doesn't force him to do stuff that he doesn't want to do, like I don't know throw in a villain just because the fans like him and then totally cannibalize the story. I would love them to recast a few people( Dunst, you suck!).
The Witchblade poster looks cool and I remember the show which I actually liked. Yancy Butler is damn beautiful.
And from reports this week, we already know that Cap is not in the theatrical cut but will be in the 70 minutes of footage that will be released in the DVD.

I admit, it hurts, it hurts bad. There were some tears last night. I am a broken man, a shell of my former self. Sad, sad day indeed.

By the way, this Rumor page sucks. Seriously, my fellow Maniacs have discussed practically all these rumors during the week in other threads. You guys should put the rumors up when they happen instead of waiting till every friday.

1. You have to wonder what Favreau is asking. I could see him raising pretty high after the success he had, and maybe he's worth it if anyone is, but you have to wonder what he wants.

4. Glad to hear the news. It was a good interview too.

And Pony- he said that the movie released on DVD would be the one in the theater. There will be no extended version.

WISEGUY562 • Jun 13, 2008, 06:08am •
The Cap rumor is being debunked by the producer Gale Anne Hurd. She says no Cap scene whatsoever. Not on the dvd, movie or cut scenes. Simply that Louis basically was referring to the SS serum and maybe his bad English got the best of him.
Louis said there won't be an extended version but that all the edited footage would be in the dvd, it just won't be put together as a new film ala LOTR extended editions.

Marvel is playing hardball, Favreau is maybe using the web and the fans' voices to help him. Marvel, says Nikki Finke, already offered a richer deal than his initial 4mil plus incentives once IM reached certain criteria.

I could go either way with Raimi and his cast coming back. Just make a better film than 3.

note to Lakers' fans (hanso et al) I am repeating this
That's how you pull off a comeback. No that half ass shit that went down in game 2. Either you do it all the way or else it isn't worth talking about. I was about to jump out of my window at halftime but only cause I'm on the first floor. I knew we had the Lakers right where we wanted them, 24 point ahead and ripe for the kill. BOOO HAA HAA HA ha ha ha...Yeah that's my evil laugh.

Celtics and the Hulk rampaging through June Baby.
GREEN ALL THE WAY

Lakers Suck, Kobe Sucks and the Boston Red Sox Suck, GO YANKS!! but GO CELTICS in 6!

BOO YAH!!

WISEGUY562 • Jun 13, 2008, 06:20am •
Damn pony it's like we're blood brothers. Same teams, at least those two are and hate the other two just as well.

hanso is right on his second post. I said the same thing before in a blog. One thread for so many topics doesn't do them justice and neither does waiting sometimes the entire week to post them.

hanso • Jun 13, 2008, 06:31am •
I got no respect for someone that roots for the Yanks & the Celtics. What kind of fan is that?

Boston peeps are rolling over in their graves after hearing there are Cs and Yank fans.

Bandwagon fans if you ask me. What, did I just question your fanhood? oh, I think i did.

WISEGUY562 • Jun 13, 2008, 06:51am •
I also like the Redskins and the Devils.

As for bandwagon fans, why I would I go with the C's who haven't won in 21 years, the Yanks are 500, the Skins haven't won since 92 at least the Devil are usually in the mix.. Meanwhile you're on the east coast and root for the Lakers (who have won more recently) that's what I call jumping on the bandwagon. How come you don't root for the Wizards, oh that's right they usually suck King Kong balls.

hanso, I love you but you can't rain on this parade brother. It's just so sweet. I wonder what those tears taste like. I bet they're nice and salty yet sweet at the same time.

The Lakers suck and they wear BITCH colors.
