Top Maniacal Rumors: Jane's Hex, Metal Life and Crowe Watson

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, September 05, 2008

It’s time for another edition of Mania’s Most Maniacal Rumors, where we blow the lid off the week’s juiciest gossip and hush-hush industry whispers.
If you have a rumor you want to contribute, we’re all ears. Just send it to jarrod@mania.com.

Thomas Jane Still Up for the Jonah Hex Role?
Rumor: There can be no doubts that former “Punisher” Thomas Jane is very passionate about the upcoming Jonah Hex comic adaptation. Enough so that the actor went to a studio and had a make-up rehearsal for the character without the producers’ knowledge. So, does the passion translate into the actor leading a new comic character to the big screen? Not according to directors Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor.
Source: The Movie Blog
Mania Verdict: FALSE---Despite Jane’s desire to play the role, the directors confirmed that Jane isn’t in consideration.
"We had never brought his name up, he's great, we like him ... We don't see the guy as Jonah Hex, to be quite honest with you. But we like him. We're totally stoked that he would do that, it's so awesome."

Russell Crowe Is Dr. Watson to Robert Downey Jr.’s Sherlock Holmes?

Rumor: We’d be remiss not to pass this particular wild rumor from earlier in this week to you weekend viewers. Coming out of the tabloids, a rumor popped up that a “source” close to Russell Crowe indicated the actor wanting to play sidekick to Robert Downey Jr. in Guy Ritchie’s upcoming Sherlock Holmes.

Source: The Sun
Mania Verdict: FALSE---No verdict needed. The director himself quickly told Empire Online that there was no truth to this rumor within hours of it appearing online.

Heavy Metal Still Coming to Theaters?

Rumor: More rumors popped up this week that David Fincher was still developing an updated version of Heavy Metal for the big screen, despite the fact that Paramount Pictures dropped the project for being "too risque for mainstream audiences.”

Source: The Playlist
Mania Verdict: TRUE---Sony Pictures, the studio who released the original 1981 version, has grabbed the rights and it seems that Paramount Pictures dropped it for entirely different reasons. Here’s what executive producer Kevin Eastman had to reveal on the subject.
"We developed it for Paramount in January... And it was time for them to make a decision [about going forward with the project] and they were at odds with Fincher over another project, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, [because] they wanted him to reduce the running time and so they said, Until you step up to do what we want you to do with Benjamin, we're not going to greenlight any other of [your] movies. And David said, Fine, f**k you, I'm going to set up [Heavy Metal] somewhere else,' so we jumped over to Sony and set it up there."

Perlman Indicates a Third Hellboy is Coming?

Rumor: Leading actor Ron Perlman threw some fire into the sequel discussion for his Hellboy character by saying that a third Hellboy adventure is very likely.

Source: Moviehole
Mania Verdict: MAYBE---Bypassing the fact that the Perlman quote seems to be right after the second film hit theaters, the question that a lot of us have on any Hellboy sequel discussion is when director Guillermo del Toro will find the time to jump back into the franchise. As reported this week, Del Toro is locked into multiple projects through the year 2017, none of which include a third Hellboy.

Max Makowski Leading Adaptation of Voltron?

Rumor: Going into the last weekend’s holiday break, a rumor struck the wires that relative unknown director Max Makowski would be leading the adaptation of the anime Voltron.

Source: Latino Review
Mania Verdict: TRUE---Variety has confirmed the director be locked in for the Relativity Media production. Max is also bringing about a big screen adaptation of Kung Fu, based on the old television series and has a writing credit on the upcoming revision of Hawaii-Five O.

That's not a very good looking make-up job on Jane. Kinda looks like some buddy of his just globbed a few things on there. Maybe I should try the same thing and see if they'll cast me as Jonah.

I'm scared Sherlock Homes with be RDJ's K-Pax.

Growing up, I used to think Voltron and Hawaii-Five-O were very similar, and that they probably shared the same writers.

Do we really need a live-action Voltron movie? I just can't picture this flick being anything other than lame.

ps....give it up Tom Jane

1. Jonah Hex has two directors? Thank God one of them worked on Crank & Crank 2: High Voltage Boogaloo. I’m sure he’ll have no trouble translating Hex. Jane’s make-up leaves a lot to be desired but at this point I’d feel better about this if he was involved.

2. Good. I like Crowe but just don’t see him willing to play second fiddle to Downey’s Holmes. Looking forward to this though.

3. Good. I’ll start shopping around for mushrooms now.

4. I loved both films and really hope we get a third. Keep in shape Perlman!!

5. Voltron has one director? At least it’s one that has worked on Queer Eye For The Straight Guy.

Hey man, did you guys hear the stuff about Crowe not being Watson but instead possibly being Prof. Moriarty?
And that Watson was offered to Gerard Butler who passed on it?

joeybaloney • Sep 05, 2008, 08:49am •
Seriously?

hanso • Sep 05, 2008, 08:51am •
That hurts me. When am I not serious?

I'll shoot u the link. Mind u it's a rumor.

I think he's better for that role than for Watson.
I think it's true they offered Watson to Butle since Butler just worked with Ritchie in Rock n Rolla.
I wonder why he would turn it down, i mean the guy signed on to do Nim's Island & PS I love You, why can't he sign on for this?

You are a very serious individual. Please excuse my doubt.

I can see Crowe as the antagonist much more than as Watson.

Not sure what'd I'd think of Butler as Watson. I've always seen him as a bit older and a little more out of shape than Holmes.
