Top Maniacal Rumors: Maguire Cash, Boreanaz Green and Longoria Wasp!

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, September 19, 2008

It’s time for another edition of Mania’s Most Maniacal Rumors, where we blow the lid off the week’s juiciest gossip and hush-hush industry whispers.
If you have a rumor you want to contribute, we’re all ears. Just send it to jarrod@mania.com.

Maguire pulling in a 50 million payday for Spider-Man 4 and 5?
Rumor: Fresh off the news that Maguire (and possibly Raimi) are officially coming back into Sony’s Spider-Man franchise, a new unconfirmed report has popped up stating that Maguire could be pulling in up to $50 million dollars for his services.
Source: Times Online
Mania Verdict: TRUE---This isn’t unheard of for high profile projects. Actors and studios sometimes cut a deal to get some funds on the backside of the profit margins (after theatrical and DVD release cash comes in). While we’re not sure if those receipts amount to a $50 mil payday, it could happen for the leading star.

Wonder Woman Getting a Modern Day Image?

Rumor: Despite this film living in development hell for sometime, a new report appeared suggesting that producer Leonard Goldberg doesn’t want to retread the same ground seen before.

Source: MTV
Mania Verdict: TRUE---Who wants to live in the past when it comes to bringing Superheroes to the big screen? That’s what Goldberg is thinking here.
"I can only speak for myself ... I would like it to be more current," Goldberg said. "I hope that we don't finally wind up doing the same story again: Steve Trevor flying, and his plane crashes onto the island [of Themyscira, Wonder Woman's matriarchal homeland]. He's supposed to be executed, and she saves his life. Perhaps we'll do that in a very abbreviated fashion up front, and then come up with a story that no one has seen yet."

Dr. Mann Appearing in the First Y:The Last Man Film?

Rumor: Director D.J. Caruso has been quiet for his upcoming planned trilogy of the comic series Y:The Last Man these past few months (he’s a busy man these days) but it seems that he is thinking about having the good Doctor in his first installment.

Source: UGO Movie Blog
Mania Verdict: TRUE---Here’s what he had to say.
"Everyone's like 'Lucy Liu' or dah dah dah.  I don't know!  It's really hard because you want to have this ... whew.  I don't know to be quite honest ... actually 711 is in this.  Do you remember 711?  She's in our screenplay too.  So I've given a lot of thought to 711 ... but 355 ... I don't know the right answer because that's this really Stanford, MIT type of intelligence, and at the same time she's asked to do a lot of interesting things and the whole thing with the cloning.  You really want Dr. Mann to be believable.  And believe it or not, Dr. Mann definitely is involved majorly in the first ... in the beginning of this, but we don't really get into the Dr. Mann stuff, or deeper into the Dr. Mann stuff, until, God willing, if we get into the second movie."
David Boreanaz is playing Hal Jordan in The Green Lantern?

Source: Moviehole
Mania Verdict: FALSE---This rumor was debunked by Latino Review who also posted a positive script review of the upcoming project. They’re right too. The character will be 27 in the film and David is too old to play it.

Eva Longoria is The Wasp in The Avengers?

Rumor: Actress Eva Longoria (Desperate Housewives) appeared in the news media this week by being linked to the role of Janet Van Dyne---aka The Wasp---in Marvel Studio’s upcoming adaptation of The Avengers

Source: Oh No They Didn’t
Mania Verdict: FALSE---That’s the call at this point so early into preproduction of the project. It should also be noted that The Wasp doesn’t appear in the issue that Eva L. is holding in the photos linked above. Maya Lopez—aka Echo---does appear in that issue. We will admit that she might be studying for a part in the film or researching in hopes of landing a role but whether it’s The Wasp is unsure.

Eva Mendes doesn’t think a Ghost Rider 2 will happen?

Rumor: Let’s go back-to-back with “Eva” news. Despite the latest rumors suggesting a possible sequel, Eva Mendes has gone on record not seeing a follow-up to the 2007 film.

Source: MTV
Mania Verdict: No verdict needed. Eva is stating her opinion here but then at the end of the quote, she does say that she will come back to act with Nic Cage in anything.
"I think 'Ghost Rider' had its moment.  I don't know about a sequel, but I don't think it needs one.  I think it was a great experience, and I was so proud of it. It was fun ... but I think it's done.  But look, hey, if it's Nicolas Cage again -- I'll do anything with him."

Edward Norton Back for Incredible Hulk 2?

Rumor: Universal and Marvel Studio executives have publicly said they’re “pleased” with the box office results of this summer’s Incredible Hulk, despite the fact that it came out nearly the same as Ang Lee’s 2003 film. The next question is when (or if) the sequel will be happening for the Green Menace. When that was asked to leading star Edward Norton, he seemed “unsure”.

Source: MTV
Mania Verdict: TRUE---We think Norton will be back but we find it more likely that Marvel Studios will focus on getting Thor, Ant-Man and Captain America into theaters before any Incredible Hulk 2 sees the light of day. Here’s what Norton had to say.
"The minds of Marvel are sometimes opaque," Norton. "I won't say [they're] obtuse, but I don't have any idea what they want to do."

Watchmen 2 Still a Possibility?

Rumor: While we don’t even know when the first Watchmen will come into theaters thanks to the 20th Century Fox lawsuit over copyright infringement, it seems that Warner Bros. and producers still hold hopes for a Watchmen 2 follow-up.

Source: MTV
Mania Verdict: TRUE---Here’s what leading star Patrick Wilson has to say on it.
"It's all been talked about," Wilson said. "Financially, they like to do that. But all of us, [director] Zack [Snyder] included, all go, 'How on Earth could you do a sequel or prequel?'"

Hey, all superhero stuff. Nice.

1. Good for Maguire. Lika Jay says "if you aint in it for the money get out of the game".

2. Don't care what they come up with for this but I think the story she doesn't want to do is the one that's gonna get made for the cartoon dvd coming out. Meaning she doesn't have to worry cause I doubt they do that again in live action.

3. Haven't read this.

4. Who the hell wants to see David Boreanaz in anything?

5. Eva Longoria is damn hot!!

6. Mendes doesn't have to be in any Ghost Rider sequel so who cares what she has to say.

7. Norton needs to shut the hell up and play nice cause he can be replaced in a heartbeat and the franchise won't miss a beat.

8. Prequel could definitely work and if Watchmen turns out be really good, I don't see why not.

1) Seriously, people. $50 million??
2) Batman's Origin? I've seen and read it a million times. Superman's Origin? I've seen and read it a million times. Wonder Woman's Origin? I can't say I've ever seen/read/or even heard a full account of it. I'd like to say I'm well versed in comic books, but all I know is what expository dialogue on Justice League Unlimited told me (she left the amazons to be their diplomat in the real world). That said, origin stories are overrated.
3) I don't understand any of that explanation, and I have all ten trades sitting on my book shelf. What's so odd about including Dr. Mann and 355 in the first film?
4) Didn't Boreanaz play Hal in the New Frontier animation? Are people saying Lucy Lawless is going to play Wonder Woman and NPH is going to play the Flash in their own live action films? Because that would be awesome. Kyle MacLachlan as Superman? Yeah, I'd probably sooner go see that then another Bryan Singer Superman flick.
5) Kiera Knightly as the wasp.
6) I read some damn good Ghost Rider last week. "The Trail of Tears." Garth Ennis. If he did a run on Ghost Rider that was half as decent as his Punisher Max run, I'd be hella stoked.
7) Replace him with Steve Bushemi. Make the Ultimates predictions all come true.
8) I'd rather Moore do a follow up series then some hack write a follow up movie.

1) 50 mil sounds about right. I don`t know what he got for the first 3, but since it is 2 movies. I don`t see a problem with it. He's a decent Parker. I just hope they don`t try that same bullshit with Dunst. She should be paying them to play MJ. She probably loses the studio money every time, she`s on screen. She is shitastic!
2)I can honestly say I have never read or have much knowledge about WW`s origin. I don`t see anything wrong with them showing her origin story the way it was written. Its not like planes don`t crash anymore and there are plenty of undiscovered, unexplored islands.
3) Don`t know enough about Y:The Last Man to comment.
4)Boreanaz did voice Hal Jordan in New Frontier and did a good job, but he is kind of old to play Jordan in an origin story. If it was him a bit older then cool.
5) Eva Longoria is totally overrated. She`s okay, but I don`t think I would want her touching any comic property.
6)I like Eva Mendes, but she's like Dunst in Spiderman where what she has to say really has no impact on the development of the movie. They can recast or what ever. Katie Holmes anybody?
7)I am pretty sure Norton will be back.
8) I already commented about it in the article.Alan Moore-less sequel, No thanks!

1)Better get $50 million wisecracks outta Spidey ya sumbitches

2)AMiSH! I thought you were a nerd. Tsk. Everyone knows that, lately, Wonder Woman is an anatomically correct animated clay figure. I won’t miss Steve Trevor at all. I just want this made and made good. Finally!! Clock’s ticking WB.

3)Need to pick up these trades. All Greek to me at the moment.

4)Good I guess, cuz of the age thing, I guess.

5)I’ve never watched an episode of Desperate Housewives. No opinion on this.

6)Ideally this would return to Marvel and get the reboot but since that ain’t got any shot at happening I’d like to see a #2 to this. I enjoyed the first one.

7)I hope Norton returns. Where’s my damn extended cut?

8)I have begun to stockpile weapons.

Joey don't lie, you know you've seen Desperate Housewives.

ponyboy76 • Sep 19, 2008, 07:34am •
You know he`s rockin the box sets!

1- Good for Tobey. It is for 2 films and you can bet that they'll do at least 1.5 billion worldwide.

2-Amish, I'm surprised as well. Then again WW really isn't the icon she used to be. She was made from clay by Hyppolita (Ithink that's how is spelled). And like Superman she wasn't able to fly at first but they added that power later on.

3-Never cared for Y the last man, even though it was highly praised by critics. But A movie I'll definitely check out. You know Shia is gonna get the lead for this.

4-I hate Boreanaz, glad he's not in the running. Something about him that I just can't get passed.

5-I'm a hundred percent for Langoria to play the Wasp.

6-Amish, you're right Trail of Tears was damn good. That would make a nice prequel with some changes to GR and Sam Elliot being the main guy.
Mendes needs to shut the f up. She isn't a requirement for a sequel.

7-I think Norton will be back but I wouldn't complain if they replace him after all the headaches he caused and the poor way he did publicity for the film.

8-I'm also behind this but would hope that they do a prequel instead.

AMiSHPiRATE • Sep 19, 2008, 08:29am •
God, people! When will you learn? I'm not a nerd, I just make fun of them on alleged genre sites. Now if you'll excuse me, I've got to get back to working on my animated webseries that derives influence from early `90's disney cartoons & space opera.

Yo Bendis! Where's my Secret Invasion #7!?

1. Like I said when PJ sued New Line for his profits, none of you can honestly tell me that if you thought you were owed the money that you wouldn't take it or go for it. These movies have made the studio a ton of bank and, from what I've read, the $50M figure includes profit sharing IF the new movies make comparable BO to the first 3. I have no problem with this.

2. New/old. Either/or. I'm just thinking this movie will never get made.

3. Don't know enough about Y, but if the creator of the comic says Shia is the man, he should get the part.

4. I have no prob with Boreanaz, but it's irrelevant because he's too old for the part as it is written. I think this rumor only got started because the artist stated that he used DB as his physical model for Hal, just as Wesley was modeled after Eminem in Wanted.

5. I'm fine with Eva, she's hot, but I think this is bogus. The pic looks photoshopped.

6. I thought GR was ok, so I'd be fine with a sequel. I doubt it will happen though. P.S. Eva Mendes is smokin'!!

7. People need to lay off Norton. All parties agreed that there was no issue with him. It was the media trying to make a story where there was none. If they make a Hulk 2, or use the Hulk in The Avengers, Norton is the man to do it.

8. Maybe Alan Moore will write the screenplay for it. Shyah! And monkeys might fly out of my butt!

hanso • Sep 19, 2008, 09:17am •
FFT, if there never was an issue, why is Norton calling them names? I think both parties agree to say there was nothing wrong to try to calm the controversy growing around the movie.
