Top Maniacal Rumors: More Turtles, Doom Love and Moore Dissent

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, July 25, 2008

It’s time for another edition of Mania’s Most Maniacal Rumors, where we blow the lid off the week’s juiciest gossip and hush-hush industry whispers.
If you have a rumor you want to contribute, we’re all ears. Just send it to jarrod@mania.com.

A TMNT Sequel Planned for 2010?
Rumor: With the relative success of last year’s TMNT (Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), there was word a while back of a 50/50 chance for a sequel. Apparently from the latest rumor, those odds have increased and Mirage Licensing is in negotiations with companies to bring a sequel to the cinema by 2010.
Source: Playmates Toys
Mania Verdict: TRUE–The first film was produced on a low $34 mil budget and wound up grossing $95 million worldwide in March 2007. With DVD sales increasing that profit line, it stands to reason the company would go forward with a sequel.

A Separate Thulsa Doom Film Other Than Conan Remake?

Rumor: We know of a Conan the Barbarian remake on the horizon as well as Hollywood gearing up for a Red Sonja redo. The latest report also has Conan’s nemesis from the first Robert E. Howard tale also getting a spin-off as well with Blood Diamonds’ Djimon Hounsou set to lead.

Source: Variety
Mania Verdict: TRUE–But the real question from most fans is whether the villain, originally played by James Earl Jones, will work for most audiences who don’t follow the Howard source material.

Alan Moore Against Zach Snyder Directing Watchmen?

Rumor: We’ve already heard that Watchmen creator Alan Moore was against his ‘80s graphic novel getting an adaptation, but the latest interview from Entertainment Weekly seems to give more insight into Mr. Moore’s thoughts on the big screen treatment of his own comic masterpiece.

Source: Entertainment Weekly
Mania Verdict: TRUE–As said above, Alan Moore has been vocally against his Watchmen getting a theatrical adaptation but now, he’s taking shots at Frank Miller and Zack Snyder in the process.
"He's also the person who made 300. I've not seen any recent comic book films, but I didn't particularly like the book '300.' I had a lot of problems with it, and everything I heard or saw about the film tended to increase [those problems] rather than reduce them: [that] it was racist, it was homophobic, and above all it was sublimely stupid. I know that that's not what people going in to see a film like '300' are thinking about but ... I wasn't impressed with that ... I talked to [director] Terry Gilliam in the '80s, and he asked me how I would make 'Watchmen' into a film. I said, 'Well actually, Terry, if anybody asked me, I would have said, 'I wouldn't.' And I think that Terry [who aborted his attempted adaptation of the book] eventually came to agree with me. There are things that we did with Watchmen that could only work in a comic, and were indeed designed to show off things that other media can't ... I increasingly fear that nothing good can come of almost any adaptation, and obviously that's sweeping. There are a couple of adaptations that are perhaps as good or better than the original work. But the vast majority of them are pointless."

Director Peter Berg Taking on Hercules?

Rumor: After decades of getting various adaptations for the big screen, the latest report has director Peter Berg–fresh off his Hancock success–being the next in line to adapt the mythological character.

Source: Hollywood Reporter
Mania Verdict: TRUE–Peter Berg had this to say about his upcoming take on the character:
"What resonated for them was that this was character driven, about a character who's more man than god, with conflicts and redemption.”

Cartoon Network Making Three Comic Books Into Movies?

Rumor: While giving a comic the film treatment is becoming more and more common, reports have it that the Cartoon Network is getting into the game by adapting Firebreather, The Vanishers and Mice Templar into animated movies.
Source: CBR News
Mania Verdict: TRUE–Here’s what CN Vice President Ramsey Naito had to say on the new projects:
"We're thrilled to expand our movie slate with both cinematic quality CG and live action. As we bring these and other titles into development, we'll be seeking out projects that combine distinct voices with striking, contemporary visual worlds."

As a child of the 80's and a gigantic Ninja Turtles fan I'm glad to see a sequel is on it's way. The first one was actually pretty enjoyable, so I'll definitely check the next one.

I am glad Alan Moore is sticking to his guns as being a raging asshole. It's what we want in writers not flip floppers like soon to be prez's. Makes me think he is the last of the true artists and not a money grubber. Of course that makes me want to see Watchmen more.

Yeah Dazzler, That article in EW went on to say Moore is so hardcore that he's removed his name from the movies credits and gave his royalties check to Watchmen artist Dave Gibbons.

WOW!! Moore really is a jerk. But like you Dazzler I too give him credit for sticking to his gun's. I mean the work he put into the series, he deserves to give his opinion on what they should do with it. Althought because it officially belongs to someone else it doesn't really matter what he says. I find it funny though how he mentions talking to someone in the 80's about how to do the movie. To me that is like talking to someone using a computer in 1985 and asking if it's possible to make it small enough to be carried in a briefcase and have a faster processor. Times change and from the trailer I think Snyder will do the movie huge justice.

More Turtles? Excellent. They need to bring in Shredder for this next one though, the baddies from the first film just don't cut it. I want more Footclan also!

Hercules, Red Sonja, Thulsa Doom, 300 prequel, Clash of the Titans and Thor but no God of War movie. Fuck u Sony!

Moore can say whatever he wants, I'm sure he's depressed from League of Extraordinary Gentlemen.

I'd mainly like to pass along the "rumor" I saw on G4's coverage of the San Diego Comic Con last night. Michael Uslan, exec producer of all the Batman films and the upcoming Spirit film, said on the show that he will be developing a Doc Savage film. To which I say yes, yes, yes!!!

Just two suggestions to him: Dwayne Johnson as the Man of Bronze. And the other is to set it in modern times. The first suggestion I can't see anyone disagreeing with. The Rock was made for this role. The second might be blasphemy to alot of Savage fans, but comic book/pulp novels set in the early 20th century as movies are notorious for financial failure (the Shadow/1970's Doc Savage film/Sky Captain). Also the character and his companions were supposed to be hi-tech guys of the 1930's. It would all just look quaint and archaic to show them in that time period today.

1-I enjoyed the last TMNT film also so a sequel is cool with me.

2-Thulsa Doom is alright with me. Always down for sword and sorcery stuff.
Let's start a petition for Uwe Boll to do a GoW film for hanso

3-I too admire Moore for sticking to his guns. He may be an asshole but by not selling out it shows he has integrity also.

4-I like most of Berg's work. Although he missed with Hancock IMO, that was just as bad as Super Ex Girlfriend. But I'd see his take on Hercules for sure.

5-I guess they figure "brought to you by CN" will help sell it to kids otherwise they may as well do it under the WB banner since they are the parent company.

I like Mark Millar's view on cinematic comic adaptations. He has basically stated that he's happy to take the money because it doesn't change the original work. The movie is a different beast. It may be originally based on a comic, but it is its own thing. As long as the filmmakers don't try to get him to change something as he's writing it, he's fine with whatever they do in the movie. That's a healthy way to look at it. What I don't get is this: if Moore is *SO* anti-Hollywood, why did he sell the rights in the first place? I'm guessing they gave him an obscene amount of money back in the day, but after the 1st horrendous experience, why would he keep making deals, then shitting on them later? Try it once, if it doesn't work, don't do it again!

WISEGUY562 • Jul 25, 2008, 08:28am •
fft, I admit I'm not sure but did Moore sell the rights or were the rights held by the publisher. I know DC has the Watchmen rights but I don't know if that's the case for his other works. But if the publisher owns the rights it's all out of his hands anyway.

Ever seen a picture of Moore? Scary individual, talented, but scary. I wasn't a big fan of the Watchmen graphic novel though I did love the characters and will definitely check out the movie. I think Moore is just a grumpy ol' bastard.
