Top Maniacal Rumors: Myers Lives, Cher Cat and Van Damme Soldier

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, August 29, 2008

It’s time for another edition of Mania’s Most Maniacal Rumors, where we blow the lid off the week’s juiciest gossip and hush-hush industry whispers.
If you have a rumor you want to contribute, we’re all ears. Just send it to jarrod@mania.com.

Halloween Sequel Still Open for Dimension?
Rumor: A few months after the rumor vine suggested that a sequel was planned after Rob Zombie’s remake from the Weinstein Company, Maniac Joeybaloney passed along a new one this week again hinting that follow-up was indeed coming.
Source: Rue Morgue Magazine
Mania Verdict: TRUE---Despite the Weinsteins saying that Zombie’s film would likely be the last for a while shortly after the 2007 release, the rumors have continued to suggest otherwise. Zombie may not be coming back to lead but Inside creators Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo are likely leading the next sequel.
"It's a proposition we couldn't refuse,” Maury explained and added that he and Bustillo are well aware of Zombie's re-imagining of Michael Myers and they're out to put their stamp on the character, not copy what came before them. "Therefore, our vision will be done with utmost respect, with a continuity of [Zombie's] work but also a real evolution of the world he set in place."

Cher is Nolan’s Catwoman?

Rumor: Alongside the widely published rumors that Johnny Depp and Angelina Jolie could be in the next Batman film, the latest rumor suggests that Cher could be taking on the role of Catwoman.

Source: Ace Showbiz
Mania Verdict: FALSE---False, false, and false. Christopher Nolan is still on vacation while his film hits the $500 mil domestic mark at theaters. While Nolan may have some sort of idea for a third story (if he comes back to do another film), all casting rumors for the next installment are false. With no story, there will be no casting announcements anytime soon for any new potential characters.

Dragonball Trailer coming in October?

Rumor: Word has hit the net that the first trailer for 20th Century Fox’s upcoming adaptation of Dragonball should be hitting theaters October 17th, attached to the debut of Mark Wahlberg’s Max Payne.

Source: ComingSoon
Mania Verdict: TRUE---We’ve checked with our sources as well and this seems to the be the day set aside for the first official trailer of the anime adaptation. Max Payne is also the most genre-related wide release from 20th Century Fox this fall. The only other option being Australia, which hits theaters November 14, 2008.

Universal Soldier 3 Still in Development for Van Damme?

Rumor: The rumor that an “official” third installment of the Universal Soldier franchise being in development first reared its head back in April via Joblo and it seems that development on the project is still moving forward with Jean Claude Van Damme set to reprise his role.

Source: AFM
Mania Verdict: MAYBE---Much like most rumors, the question really is whether this will ever become fact or whether this production reuniting Dolph Lundgren and Jean-Claude Van Damme again will just be another Straight-to-DVD release like the previous two “unofficial” sequels.

Wright Finished Writing Adaptation of Ant-Man?

Rumor: While the Avengers is still a few years away, Marvel is continuing forward with prepping single individual films of their superheroes in anticipation of the team-up. One of those heroes is Ant-Man, which has Edgar Wright (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) in charge. The latest news suggests that Wright has finished writing his draft of the script.
Source: IGN
Mania Verdict: TRUE---Here’s what Edgar had to say about the long wait for this superhero.
"I wrote the first draft of the script which, to be honest, kind of took two years to deliver because I did 'Hot Fuzz' in the middle of it. But I did my first draft of it just before the [writers'] strike last year and I think it's one of my favorite things I've ever written. It was a real blast to write. I know that [Marvel's] very pleased with what we've done and, really, really, the appeal to that for me is the fact that like, Ant-Man is considered slightly D-list. The whole raison d'etre of the piece for me and my thing has always been to take something that would seem to be uncool and make it really cool and that's certainly the case with British cops in 'Hot Fuzz.' To take the most seemingly kind of underwhelming concept and make something really cool out of it -- I always liked that premise."

I'm just relieved to hear that the rumors surrounding the next Batman movie were just that- rumors. I like that the bad guys have never been BIG actors. Cillian Murphy, Aaron Eckhart and Heath Ledger were all great actors, but they are not Johnny Depp or Angie Jolie. It was easy to see them as the characters they were portraying, not the big name actors.

Universal Soldier 3? I may have to see it just for the nostalgia (drunk of course).

I'd like to see where he goes with antman. Wasn't that character a wife beater?

I confess a certian curiosity about Ant Man. I mean, with appologies to fan of the hero, he IS somewhat "D-list." However, Edgar Wright has written some very good movies... not quite this fit, but good movies fitting their respective genres quite well.

And, Hot Fuzz surprised me. That is very rare, and usually awakens me from my day to day stupor.

In all, I am very, very curious about this particularity in movies... a movie about Ant Man.

Halloween sequel: Doesn't matter to me. I still haven't seen the Zombie version.

Cher as Catwoman: Only if she still looked like she did in that pic:)

Dragonball: I was never a fan of the show so I would judge everything from a trailer. If it looked great to me as an outsider to it, I would see it.

Uni-Sol 3: Is it three? There was the original which I enjoyed. Then 2 straight-to-video sequels w/o Van Damme. Then they did a new theatrical with Jean-Claude which did not impress me. I'm sure he's looking for something that will revive his career but I'm not to sure this kind of film would even be any good (to me). Maybe he should get Tarantino to cast him in Inglorious Bastards to jumpstart himself up.

Ant-man: I'm looking forward to this. After the great story and directing for Shaun of the Dead and Hot Fuzz, I'd love to see his take on Hank Pym.

All rumors of Bat are untrue till Nolan has at least signed officially for he 3rd movie. Ray Winstone for Penguin! Emily Blunt for Catwoman.

Universal Solider 3. Screwed that, what they need to do is a remake of Cyborg and throw Van Damme a little part in it.

ANT-MAN WILL OWN YOU!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

That is the only thing that has made me even a little excited for Ant-man. And I'm even pumped to see Avengers.
Ant-Man might be cool.

Thank goodness that all rumors for Batman are just rumors....Nolan is doing exactly what I think he should: Absolutely nothing. If he should come back and do another, it would be in excellent hands, and whatever he decides to do, we'll all be uber excited about it...

Halloween? Meh. Not alll that excited about hearing that rumor...I still haven't seen Zombie's take, and from what I hear tell, I'm not missing much.

Dragonball Z has my attention though...it would be interesting seeing a trailer for this...the show was excellent. Plus it will be interesting to know how much hairspray and mousse was used for the production of the movie...

Ant-Man is a D list hero with A list brains...so it should be interesting to see how that works out. I don't think that he's going to take himself to seriously, and yes Henry Pym has some "domestic issues". I thought during the Ultimates Series, when it was still worth reading that they played it out very well....Cap and he had a smack down, which he lost and then Cap took his girl....at least in the Ultimates universe...

Kind of a short rumor list this week.

The Batman rumors, especially the Cher/Catwoman one, was just plain ridiculous. She probably started that one herself ala, Sean Young or Annette Benning. I forget which one, whenshe wanted Tim Burton to cast her as Catwoman. An irrelevant actor trying to make herself relevant.
Never really got into Dragon Ball Z so I don`t really care, but am curious to see what it looks like.

After watching the unofficial Universal Soldier sequels I can honestly say, "WTF? Why bother? Is anyone really clamoring for US3? I would like to see a team up of Van Damme, Seagal and Lundgren. The last 2 are still making movies, all be it bad ones so it might work. It will at least be a pay check for them all.

I like Edgar Wright. The dude can... well write. Hot Fuzz, loved it! Best scene is when Pegg drop kicks that old lady towards the end. I couldn't stop laughing and still can't. I'm also looking forward to what he does with this Scott Pilgrim flick.
Ant-Man is definitely a D-lister. I'm sure he is near and dear to alot of comic heads hearts so no disrespect intended, but honestly, if he was not one of the founding Avengers, he'd have been delegated to the back of the Marvel bus years ago.

Van Damme, Seagal & Lundgren? Man don't forget Wesley Snipes, who's currently owning the straight to DVD market. He's also in jail but let's free him so he can join the other 3.

Ant-man, Ant-man. Rock the Ant-Man. Ant-Man Ball Z.
.
How would Cher even work as catwoman? Isn't she ancient?

JarrodSarafin • Aug 29, 2008, 09:11am •
She's 62 years old, Amish...So yep, her being possible as Catwoman was pretty funny.

But then again, I was smiling with the Angelina Jolie and Johnny Depp rumors and everything else since then.

Nolan is on vacation...There is NO story written down anywhere for the third installment except in his head, yet some sites are going "So and so is up for this part!".

All Batman rumors are going to be chucklicious for a while now. Until Nolan signs on the dotted line and not until he actually says something himself about how far along he is in planning a story.
