Top Maniacal Rumors: Riddler's Clues, Super Millar and Abe Frankenstein

By: Jarrod Sarafin
Date: Friday, July 04, 2008

It’s time for another edition of Mania’s Most Maniacal Rumors, where we blow the lid off the week’s juiciest gossip and hush-hush industry whispers.
If you have a rumor you want to contribute, we’re all ears. Just send it to jarrod@mania.com.

The Riddler Next Villain Up for Nolan and Batman?
Rumor: Last year, there was a lot of speculation going that Anthony Michael Hall would in fact be playing the famed E. Nigma character in this upcoming sequel The Dark Knight. While that particular rumor was debunked, there are new rumors suggesting that the villain may be showing up in the third film.
Source: Movieweb
Mania Verdict: MAYBE—Co-star Gary Oldman may just be speculating as a fellow fan on who will fill the gap now that The Joker may be out of the third installment. Not as someone knowing something we don’t from the events that are about to take place in the next film. His comments may be nothing more than a nod and a wink.
"When asked if he thought they should recast Ledger for the third film, or just not include the character, Gary thought it was a good idea ... Oldman then took a moment to think about it some more, 'Maybe we don't need the Joker. Because we'll have The Riddler.'"

Mark Millar Ready to Lead New Superman Revision?

Rumor: A new rumor has popped up yet again that Mark Millar is teaming up with an unnamed action director to pitch a new idea for a revamp of the Superman franchise.

Source: Mark Millar’s messageboards
Mania Verdict: FALSE—Oh, we know the pitch idea is true on Millar’s part but there is something hindering him from making the pitch to Warner Bros. Last October, comic author Mark Millar—who’s Wanted just made profits at the box office—made headlines by telling online media he had an idea on retooling Superman. But only a day after telling us, he was flatly denied making the pitch to Warner Bros. executives due to the fact that he’s still penning tales for competitor Marvel Comics.
Cut to the present and he’s still authoring Marvel comics so WB and DC executives could keep him out of any new project. The last confirmed report has Bryan Singer and Legendary Pictures still working on a Superman Returns sequel as well.
Rose McGowan and Robert Rodriguez Teaming Up for Red Sonja?

Rumor: After nearly a year of going back and forth in development hell of a Barbarella remake, the real life couple are now trying to team up for a revision of Robert E. Howard’s Red Sonja heroine.

Source: USA Today

Mania Verdict: TRUE—The couple seem hell bent on making another movie together after hooking up during their Planet Terror effort, but the real question is whether this project will fall into development hell much like the Barbarella one.

Hellboy’s Doug Jones is the Next Frankenstein?

Rumor: While at the premiere of the Hellboy sequel, director Guillermo del Tor told media that he would like to see character actor Doug Jones play the monster in the Mary Shelley classic.

Source: Shock Til You Drop.
Mania Verdict: TRUE—Despite not fitting the profile of what many fans see as “the monster” in the classic tale, modern make-up effects and visual magic can easily have Jones playing the character. Add on the fact that Jones is a friend of del Toro and no novice when it comes to make-up prosthetics, the pieces fall into place.

Bale Rules Out Robin Appearance?

Rumor: The suggestion that a Robin side-kick showing up in Nolan’s trilogy has been making waves since before Batman Begins entered theaters in 2005. Three years later, the rumors are enough to have leading star Christian Bale confirm by suggesting he would be out should it ever happen.

Source: WENN
Mania Verdict: TRUE—Even if this rumor is coming from something as tabloid as WENN, we can see Bale threatening to leave should the possibility of Robin ever enter the fray. Then again, Bale and Nolan seem to be of one mind with the new trilogy so the chance of the sidekick being suggested is not likely.
“If Robin crops up in one of the new Batman films, I’ll be chaining myself up somewhere and refusing to go to work.”---Bale

Rodriquez is such a talented director. Why does he keep picking this stupid shit as his next movie? Barbarella and Red Sonja...what did these two films make combined the first time around, about 40 bucks or so?

I don't think whoever plays Frankenstein is a big deal. Besides, Del Toro is going to be so busy for the next 4 years and a lot can change.

Supes needs some kind of boost...Millar wouldn't be a bad option.

I don't care who the villain is in the next Batman movie as long as Nolan and Bale do it.

It seems like your true and false is still speculation on a lot of these. Maybe you should have an unconfirmed or confirmed column. True and False seems too final.

I guess this is a nice wrap up of the week though.

I commented on all these stories so much during the week, I really don`t have anything left to say now.
Hobbs is right about Rodriquez though. He is one of my cinematic hero's after reading "Rebel without a Crew" but he seems to really want to stay in the 70`s for awhile. He needs to get going with Sin City 2 and maybe do a western. I can really see him make a really kick ass western.

Snooze....

Yeah, he could do a good western, clint eastwood style I'd say.

First off, happy independence day to all you US folk. It's a cold winters day here. brrr

I think the Riddler would definitely make a good villain for Nolan's 3rd batman, especially if he does focus on Batman being the world's greatest detective and it being a more cerebral Batman than action focused. Bale would do so well with that.

A new superman movie could do worse than having Mark Millar write it. It could have Gough and Millar writing it (makes spew noises, lamenting Smallville's decline into mediocrity and downright character destruction.)

I really couldn't watch too much of Charmed with Rose in it, not enough nudity for my liking for a mostly female show and laughable storylines. However, Rodriguez deserves the benefit of the doubt. He is an action maestro.

Anyone can play Frankenstein, it doesn't have to be Boris Karloff anymore.

I actually would like to see Robin in a Batman sequel. If it goes onto a dark Nightwing type storyline. I can understand Bale's reluctance though as it would dilute his story.

Batman is at his best when he is fighting villains mano e mano. There is no need for Robin, not that I don't like Robin, he is fine for the comics and even in Timm/ Dini cartoons where they had time to develop his character piece by piece. However my favorite Bat stories are still when he is fighting solo. Those stories are darker and tend show off what makes Batman as awesome as he is.

As for the Superman deal, I am all for Mark Millar writing the movie. I think he could make a better movie than Singer. As bad as Superman Returns was, we need a new direction. In my opinion it is foolish for DC and WB not to let a Marvel writer help them out. Um didn't Wanted just make a lot of money and aren't people saying it is going to end up being the surprise hit of the summer? And correct me if I am wrong, but how many huge hits outside of Batman Begins and DK (forgone conclusion) has DC had at the movie theater lately? How about none? And how many people hated SR? Just a few. So doesn't it stand to reason that the creative team behind SR should be jettisoned so that someone else could give DC a shot at a better movie? I think so. I have always been a comic fan I like DC and Marvel although I have always been more of DC guy because of Supes, Bats, and GL. It just makes no sense that DC would drag their feet on this when they know Millar could probably turn in some good stuff.

I concur..NO Robin!!

Second...Superman sequel should be written and directed by Bruce Timm!
Give him an adversary who is his equal..Darkseid!!, and re-cast Superman..Mike O'Hearn!
More Action!!

I think the Riddler comment was taken out of context. Two Face and Riddler were already in a movie together (Batman Forever) and Nolan has already proven he can bring something new and different to the franchise. I don't think that Oldman's comment was anything more then to let it be known there are options.

Personally I would like to see the Mad Hatter or bring back Catwoman or Poison Ivy... Switch it up some.
