Toy Maniac’s prediction of 2010 Action Figures

One of the greatest things about writing this toy column is that I get to see a lot of toys throughout the year. Whether I go to the International Toy Fair, Comic Cons or just out to the occasional department store I am always on the lookout for what is next. I thought that today I would get out my mystic crystal ball and try and make predictions on the toys for 2010. By no means is this a list that is definite. Okay, so maybe Iron Man 2 and the Wolfman figures are definite. There are a few on this list that I hope we do get to see immortalized in plastic. Here you go Maniac’s my top ten toys for 2010.

1. Wolfman
Wolfman action figures are probably the most obvious and most definite. Well definite if the film doesn’t get delayed again. Mezco Toyz had these figures displayed last year at Toy Fair and it is a true shame that they have been sitting in some warehouse all this time. Regardless if the movie is good or bad a wolfed out Lawrence Talbot will join my toy shelf. See my column for more details.

2. Doctor Who
The last time around when the Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) regenerated into the next Doctor (David Tennant) Underground Toys made a special two pack. Without a doubt this will happen again. If only Matt Smith (the latest Doctor) can live up to Tennant’s legacy. I for one will be tuning in to find out.

3. Call of Duty: Nazi Zombies
McFarlane Toys already makes a Call of Duty action figure line. I’ve seen them and as McFarlane Figures go they are impressive. However with the Zombie crazy in full swing McFarlane has to go back to his horror roots and release a slew of Nazi Zombies. This would immediately kick in a demand for the regular soldiers as well. Come on Todd, get on these.

4. The Green Hornet
Time will tell if Seth Rogen’s involvement in the new film will be a blessing or a curse. I for one hope they don’t have Playmates do the action figures. Remember how bad the Terminator Salvation and Star Trek figures were? Whatever happens there will at least be some new retro figures of Van Williams and Bruce Lee as the Green Hornet and Kato.

5. A-Team
If you ever had any of the old A-Team figures from the eighties you’ll easily remember how terrible they were. The new film hasn’t been rated yet but we all know it won’t be rated R; which means, action figures! Again I’ll have to go with some retro figures for the likely choice. Hopefully Diamond Select Toys will put out box set of the original four members a la the old TV show.

6. Sherlock Holmes
This is a tricky one. Already there have been all kinds of rumors and talks that a sequel is a go. I don’t see toy store action figures in the works for the first film but I do see Sideshow Collectibles snagging this property. Sideshow has the patience, artistry and attention to detail that would even make Holmes proud. At Comic Con next year look for Holmes to re-merge in action figure collectible form.

7. Iron Man 2
Like there is any doubt that there won’t be Iron Man toys. Hasbro will do the retail store line and Sideshow Collectibles will do the high end ones again. Hopefully they will somehow keep that rumored extra hero a secret until the film opens. My bet is on Hawkeye. Though the Black Widow, in any incarnation, is the one we all want.

8. Smallville
2010 has a lot of great promise for Smallville (see Mania first look). With the Justice Society joining the cast it is only a matter of time before there are new figures. However I think it is time for either DC Direct or Mattel to step it up and give the Smallville heroes the DC Universe treatment. Those first few figures are terrible and the ones that followed (Aquaman and Green Arrow) were just as bad. It is time to do right by this show.

9. The Expendables
All right this movie looks to be completely bad ass. How can it not be? Stallone is clearly on a roll and perhaps may have completely found his groove again. Is there any doubt that he can’t go three for three? With that The Expendables demands action figures.

10. Tron Legacy
Tron Legacy screams toys. All right maybe it screams video games a bit louder but toys will follow just the same. Hopefully they will tie the original characters into the line as well along with vehicles. I am tired of seeing overpriced broken original Tron figures at dealer’s tables. It is time for those characters to live again.
I vote Hasbro get the A-Team license (since they're about the only game in town doing mass-product action figures). Make them with the Marvel/GI Joe 1/18 scale. Let Murdock, Face, BA, and Hannibal cruise in the GMC van with Snake Eyes and Hawk!
