Avengers 2 Casting Problems

It is all about the dollar signs

Source: Deadline.com

Deadline reported yesterday that Marvel and Disney may have some re-casting to do for Avengers 2. It all has to do with money. Apparently, the pay check and backend deals were not all equal or fair for “Earth’s Mightiest Heroes”. Then again, how could they be? Robert Downey Jr. had two Iron Man movies under his belt and third on the way in relation to Scarlett Johannsen’s Black Widow who had a mere cameo. It is surprising that she is having a contract dispute with Marvel to balance out her backend deal. The other cast member who also wants his due is Chris Hemsworth. Hemsworth has more of a leg to stand on as Thor: The Dark World arrives this year. Hemsworth also has other projects in which he is the featured star.

Check out the full detailed story on Deadline.com, it’s mind boggling.

Now, before we start recasting Thor and Black Widow, we also have to look at Marvel. Marvel does have lengthy contracts with its actors and it appears that they are holding out on them. Yes, the Avengers was a success. Yes, the cast all signed contracts for sequels and so fourth. However, Avengers 2 might be the hottest sequel on the planet next to Star Wars Episode VII. The actors may not have a leg to stand on, legally, but will the court on public opinion and fanboy anger destroy what could be the the next highest grossing film of all time? Will the average film goer care if Black Widow is not in Avengers 2? Probably not. However, if Thor is recast, then we might be looking at an Incredible Hulk scenario. They worked that one out in the end, casting-wise, but there is no new Hulk movie on the horizon.

What are your thoughts, Maniacs? Should the Avengers (the cast) get new deals and contracts? Should they honor their previous agreements? Should Marvel pay up and reap the benefits of Avengers 2?

No need to recast. Just pay the f**king money Disney and keep the whole gang. The profits will gladly repay you - so no crying about paying out for actors.

I can understand some of the salary disputes when you see RDJ making 50 mil for Avengers while the rest were making like $200,000.  But in the end it all comes down to greed on all sides.  The movie made over a billion dollars and the next will do the same.  I'm sure they can pay the actors more evenly since they are an ensemble cast and each bring in their own audience.

the actors agreed to their salaries and long term contracts - if the movies did not do well, would they agree to return part of their compensation?  i could care less about scarlett johannsen as the black widow - there's better eye candy out there that can do the same job or better.  avengers 2 will have more heroes so they can eliminate the black widow entirely (who cares about the black widow character anyway?) or minimize the role of the black widow (played by a new actress).

I could step in and help out with Scarlett's back-end...if they need it....just sayin'.

Yeah, I say pay them.  It's not like Disney is hurting for money.  Sure, there is precident for recasting actors who want what the studio considers too much money (Rhodie in the Iron Man movies), but that was before Disney and "The Avengers."  We (meaning I, and I'm assuming many others do as well) like our familiar faces in the Marvel Movie Universe.

By the by though, Screen Rant reported that they may actually be looking at a Ruffalo Hulk movie for Phase 3.  It won't be the often rumored Planet Hulk adaptation, but they're considering it.  I guess they decided against a Planet Hulk movie because they love Ruffalo in the role, but there's just little to no screen time for Bruce in that story. Sooo..........STOP!  BANNERTIME!  WHOOOOOOOOOAAAAAAAA WHOOOOOOOOAAAAAAA....

tallman, I have to agree with you. Both Marvel and Disney made a fraken fortune from just The Avengers alone. They stand a good chance at making even more with the sequel. Whatever they have to pay the actors to get them on board will be a drop in the bucket. No one will even miss it and let's not forget the sequels that are leading up to The Avengers 2.

If they have to recast, I can easily step in as Captain America or Thor, although people might notice the new guy is way better looking and better built.

I agree with Pappy. All these cats signed multi film contracts, have a hit movie and now want to scrap the old contract?

It's like those athletes that renege on their contract after 1 good season. Marvel is the one took a chance with them and the entire plan, they're the ones dropping like 300mill. for Avengers and IM3.

ddiaz numbers are wrong from what I've read. Outside of RDJ they all got in the range of 2-3 million for an ensemble film. The only one that I can see only getting 200,000 is the chick playing Maria Hill and I still doubt that.

Having said that Marvel should give them either a bonus or points after the film reaches a certain point. Something like RDJ but to a lesser degree and from what I read it seems they are trying to negotiate something.

Ok. Marvel/The Mouse needs to step up and pay Chris Helmsworth. He carried one movie for them and is an intregal part of "The Avengers" movies. Scarlett Johhansen on the other hand should be grateful that Emily Blunt was locked to film Gulliver's Travels and couldnt do Iron Man II. In fact if I'm Marvel/Disney, I see if Blunt is now available.

Wiseguy 5/8/2013 10:26:25 AM

Anyway sooner or later all these cats will need to be recast or rotated off the team. I want them back but I'm willing to accept a new team by phase 3 or have new actors in the roles.

Like Whiplash so eloquently said in IM2 "Hey man, don't get too attached to things. Learn to let go."
