Comicscape: The Best Books of 2012

The Year in Funny Books

By Joel Rickenbach     January 03, 2013
Source: Mania.com

I'll tell you right of the bat- the word "Best" is just to get your attention. What you'll find below is really my personal favorites of 2012. Feel free to disagree, but do it with style. 2012 was a helluva year for comics, and I am honored to have been able to share my perspective of the medium with you this year. Not every book on these lists got a column, but some will in due time. I wish I had as much time to write about comics as I do reading them, such is life. But that's what these lists are for, right? There's a million categories I could have included, but I kept it small for my sanity and yours. I hope you had a good year reading new books, I know I did. 2013 promises to have many memorable Wednesdays.

Best Art: JH Williams III (Batwoman)

If you've ever opened a book drawn by JH Williams, then you instantly know why he's top of the pops. No artist working today takes the risks with layout and panel structure like Williams does. Every turn of the page brings something unexpected and gorgeous. The full range of styles and mediums are at his disposal, and he uses them to full effect. When I pick one of his books off the shelf I honestly feel reverence.

Runners up: Fiona Staples (Saga), David Aja (Hawkeye), Sean Murphy (Punk Rock Jesus), Becky Cloonan (Conan, The Mire, Illustrated Dracula, Batman)

Fiona Staples is one side of the magic coin that is Saga, her earth tone laden pages and expressive character work provide the life in a book that continually shows us new worlds and life forms. David Aja has given the surprisingly amazing Hawkeye a style that perfectly fits the tone of the book, and he drew a car chase this year that will leave your jaw on the floor. I didn't get to write about Punk Rock Jesus yet, but Sean Williams' art is nothing short of astounding, and Becky Cloonan became a household name this year, including being the first female artist ever to draw an issue of Batman.

Best Writer: Scott Snyder (Batman, American Vampire, Swamp Thing)

It had to be Scott Snyder. There can be plenty of debate about who deserves the top spot, but it's Snyder's run on Batman that has been on everyone's lips all year. It honestly felt as if the comic world rise and fell with each twist in the Court of Owls arc, and the anticipation and subsequent delivery on a new, more terrifying Joker had us in knots all year. Snyder joined the elite this year, and deservedly so.

Runners up: Jeff Lemire (Sweet Tooth, Underwater Welder), Brian K Vaughan (Saga) Matt Fraction (Hawkeye),

Jeff Lemire could just as easily occupy the top spot, Underwater Welder was a treasure, and the level of storytelling he maintained in all his other books is to be commended. Brian K Vaughan gave us something truly new and original this year (more on that in a minute), and Matt Fraction got the keys to the Hawkeye mobile, and turned what would normally be a shelf filler into one of the biggest and best surprises of the year.

Best Publisher: Valiant Comics

The folks at Valiant pulled of the truly impossible this year-- Re-launch a universe that lay burned out and dormant since the 90's. Not only did they do just that, but they came crashing out of the gate with must-read stories, top writers and artists, and a commitment to treating a much beloved universe with the respect and care fans could only dream of. Not only that, but they are doing something truly ambitious- making each book stand on its own, but also creating a cohesive universe. It's a tall order for any publisher, but in 2012 they proved they are up to the task. 2013 should be a huge year for the Valiant universe. Valiant is exciting, Valiant is vital, Valiant is thankfully here to stay.

Runner up: Image Comics

Image could easily take this award any year, and no one would question it. They have proved time and again they are the breeding ground for new and interesting books, and a place creators can tell the kind of stories they truly want to share. Any new Image book that hits the shelves in 2013 should be on your pull list, believe that.

Best One-shot or Stand Alone book: Underwater Welder (Jeff Lemire)

"A Heartbreaking Work of Staggering Genius" was already taken, but Jeff Lemire could have easily chose that as a name for what ultimately became Underwater Welder. His gorgeous ink wash art depicts a seaside town, and salt worn characters that will live and breathe in your mind. The story will take you through mystery, madness and joy, all of which are special things to receive from a comic book. Pick it up and sink in.

Runners up: Building Stories (Chis Ware), Tale of Sand (Jim Henson & Ramon Perez), League of Extraordinary Gentleman, Volume III: Century: 2009 (Alan Moore & Kevin O'Neill)

Building Stories is yet another mind boggling work from Chris Ware. He takes the structure of how comics are read literally-- Building Stories comes in a box, and is told in twelve different pieces, each in a different size. It's story of life, a story of our routine, and a story not to be missed. Tale of Sand was a wonderful and surreal gem gifted to us this year. An unproduced Jim Henson screenplay is brought to life by the super talented Ramon Perez. It's a journey into what could have been, and a look into a deeper side of a modern master. If Alan Moore releases a League of Extraordinary Gentleman book, then you can be sure it will be on this list at the end of the year. Not that he cares for such things, but if it's inclusion gets you to pick it up, then so much the better. LOEG is comic book storytelling at its finest.

Best On-Going Series: Saga (Brian K Vaughan, Fiona Staples)

No surprise. It's cleaned up everywhere else, and that's no accident. Saga pulled off the rare feat of exceeding its hype, and it did so by drawing us into a fully realized fantasy/sci-fi world. It has been a monthly escape full of wonder, exploration, danger, humor and sadness. It's epic storytelling that brings out the best of the medium. Fiona Staples' art is as essential as the story, her vision of how this new world should be represented is every bit a nuanced and fresh as Brian K Vaughan's story. Saga delivers on every level, and no amount of hype or praise can diminish just how great this book is. A classic in the making.

Runners up: Batman, Hawkeye, Revival, B.P.R.D.

What else can I saw about Batman that I didn't above? If you're not reading it then you're only hurting yourself. Hawkeye is a book that just shouldn't be. Solo books for second string superheroes are forgettable by nature, sometimes even slipping into fan service. Yet Hawkeye is the polar opposite in every way-- it gives us a story that feels more vital and engaging then the big team books the character usually parades around it. Suddenly the second stringer is more interesting and fleshed out than any of his heavy hitting teammates. Credit to Marvel for letting Matt Fraction and David Aja run wild with the character. Revival is a breath of fresh air in a very stale world of horror comics. It presents us with a unique situation, and odd moments that add mystery and a fear of the unknown. Revival understands that the quiet moments can be as haunting as any amount of red ink. Somehow B.P.R.D. gets better every year. It's a constant companion of mystery, magic, fantasy and horror. Mike Mignola has culled a group of writers and artists that understand the world he's created, and they knock every series out of the park.

So, there you have it, my humble no-prizes for the comics of 2012. Please take the above as recommendations, and share your favorites below. Here's to the books of 2013!

List is interesting...not sure I agree with all the ''winners'' but they are all in the run at least, good choices.

In my mind Image has been the big winner for 2012 all accross the board for new books and writers, even arts (where they used to own this area for years). As far as new original books what they brough was so inovative and fresh and fun to read, they would deserve my vote.

As for Saga...somehow I didn't get into it...I have # 1 and 2 lying around and from what I hear they are worth quite the moula but somehow I just don't care about the story.

As for ongoing series, Bendis's run on both Avengers and New Avengers should be mentionned, he ended his run with great character development and style and made us all care about Spider-Man being part of the Avengers...heck, if he was to write any new book of Spider-Man, I would read it in a second since he seemed to get the character more then the writers of the book itself...but that is another story alltogether.

Can't say as that I am familiar with all of the titles mentioned above, but I do agree that Batman has been excellent this past year.  It actually got me back into comics for the time being.

By the way, I think Eaglemoss publications is simply genius.  They produce all of those fantastic figurines and since they produce a mini-magazine with each one, they get listed on all of the publication lists & etc.  Smart move to get some extra exposure for what I would consider a collectible series rather than a comic series.  (Really looking forward to the Batmobile series they are about to release stateside).

Personally I agree with your list.

I love Image (mainly Walking Dead and Invincible) but Saga is the book I really can't wait to read each month. It is so fun.

I did read Batman for the first 6 issues and then stopped. I liked it, but didn't want to get drawn into getting another book each month. Maybe I'll see the rest in trades. I stopped at 6 or 7 because it was a good cliffhanger to take a break at, it seemed.

TBH, Batwoman is the best book DC has right now. Of all the DC books I read right now its the one I look forward to the most each month.
