Dean Devlin says they cracked it

Given the way it swept all before it at the box office back in 1996, it's always seemed inevitable that a sequel to Independence Day might roll along sooner or later, and according to producer Dean Devlin, we might not have to wait to much longer for it to arrive.

"I hope so," says Devlin of the possibility of a sequel. "I can't say that it's going to happen, but I can say for the first time that for the first time in eleven years, Roland Emmerich and I are working together."

"There are a lot of moving pieces that are coming together," he continues. "I don't know if it will come together, but we want it to happen. This is the first time since we made the original that Roland and I are excited about doing it and feeling like we have the right idea and we have our fingers crossed."

An Independence Day sequel has long been rumored, but according to Devlin, he and Emmerich have only now come up with an idea that could do justice to the original film.

"Over the years everyone has always asked us about it," he says. "We never wanted to do it unless it felt germane to the story. In fact, ten years ago I was hired to write a sequel to Independence Day and they paid me a lot of money. After I finished the script, I gave the money back and I said, 'Don't even read the script. The script is okay, but we can't make an okay sequel to Independence Day. The fans deserve better than this.'"

"And I really decided then that I was never going to do a sequel. Until about a year and a half ago when Roland called me up and said, 'Let's try again.' So we went out to Palm Springs and we cracked it. We said, 'That's a real sequel. That's a sequel that makes sense to do. That's a sequel that won't disappoint the fans. That one feels like we always intended to do that in the first place.' So I want it to happen. I don't know if it will."

In the meantime, the original Independence Day has been pencilled in for a 3D reissue, with the film opening in the US on 3 July 2013 and a UK date to be confirmed.

Yes! Yes! Yes! I will be there at the theatre waiting on this one!

Meh...it was fun in 1996.  Not sure if I would go see a sequel.  I still watch it every now and then, but only with the Rifftrax...only way I can watch some movies anymore.

I enjoyed Stargate. Thats the best thing I can say about Devlin and Emmerich's movies. They are incredible hacks. Horrible characters, ridiculous dialogue, cheesy plot...I'm sure they have a terrific sequel in mind for fans of ID4.

I will admit that when I saw ID4 in theaters I had a good time....then I made the horrible mistake of watching it at home. Thats when I had to pay attention to details other than the effects, and, man was I shocked at how wrong I was about that movie. I guess it could be said that I got my money's worth at the theater since I enjoyed it there, but I sure as hell wasted my money on the video.  I don't care if they get Will Smith back or not. I dont care if they get Jeff Goldblum back. I dont care who they bring back, I am certainly not at all excited about this.

Blow up city movies are played out.  I wish they would do more positive spins like Star trek, minus killing off the Vulcan race of course.

The first time was fun, original in itself but man was it corny and stupid...but fun.

If there is a second one, obiously won't see it in 3D but for sure will consider it, would be nice to see Smith back in that kind of movie again.

and Dazzler, go see Star Trek again because the Vulcan race is still alive, there is about 10K vulcans still alive so the race is not erased, it's in risk of instinction, big difference.

I'm sure it could result in a new summer popcorn flick, in truth I would rather see a proper cinima part 2 to Stargate, but at least I had the shows for that.

I think I was one of the few that didn't really care for ID4.  Some "genius" magically understands language of aliens advanced to traverse space in a matter of days and is able to create a virus on a Mac (because they are magical devices afterall) and is able to destroy the invading horde... It was OK as a popcorn flick, but I really hated how they defeated the aliens.

ID4 was ridiculous fun.  Some movies just work, despite the plotholes large enough to fly a Deathstar through.  ID4 is one of those movies.  As for a sequel, that doesn't seem like a good idea.  I don't care if Devlin and Emmerich say they've "cracked it."  As much as I enjoyed ID4 and Stargate, most of their stuff is terrible.  Their assurances that they've done a good job do nothing for me.  They thought they did a good job on Godzilla, too.

ddiaz28 7/27/2012 7:04:29 AM

Don't even bother listing out the plotholes in ID4, they are so numerous.  But I don't remember anyone I knew completely disliking it back in '96.  I loved that movie and I actually watched a bunch of it just a few nights ago on tv.  I can still enjoy it.  So I'm excited to see what they come up with for a sequel.

What holiday will they name the sequel after? "Thanksgiving" (in which will Smith punches an alien and says "It's turkey time!"), or perhaps "Christmas Day" with the tagline "Alien invasions make baby Jesus cry!". Maybe they could film it at Fox studios in Sydney - "Australia Day: Come back next week, we're all drunk"
