Mania Box Office Report: TED over Magic Mike

A Talking Bear over Boy Toys

After nearly two months of Summer movies targeted at younger audiences, this weekend served as a good reminder that adults like to go to the theater too. Seth MacFarlane's Ted scored one of the best R-rated comedy debuts ever, while R-rated male stripper flick Magic Mike proved to be a very attractive option. Even the latest PG-13 Tyler Perry movie, Madea's Witness Protection, had a strong opening propelled mainly by older African American women. Overall the Top 12 earned an estimated $196.9 million, which makes it the biggest aggregated weekend ever in the month of June.
Ted scored a very impressive $54.1 million from 3,239 locations. That bests the first Hangover movie's $44.98 million for highest debut ever for an original R-rated comedy. Among all R-rated movies it ranks eighth all-time, and it ranks third among comedies behind The Hangover Part II and Sex and the City.
Ted's success is due primarily to the strength of its broadly-appealing, completely original premise: what's not to like about a foul-mouthed, pot-smoking teddy bear hanging out with Mark Wahlberg? It didn't hurt that this felt like a logical transition to the big screen for Family Guy creator Seth MacFarlane, and previews maintained the general humor of that show while clearly bringing something new to the table.
It's also worth pointing out the importance of a great release date. Originally, Ted was scheduled for July 13, which was sandwiched directly in between The Amazing Spider-Man and The Dark Knight Rises. When G.I. Joe: Retaliation was bumped to next March, Universal immediately moved Ted up two weeks to June 29. As a result, Ted came out at a time when animated movies had ruled the box office for three-straight weeks, and when two R-rated comedies (The Dictator and That's My Boy) had already failed to deliver this Summer. This turned out to be the perfect time for a raunchy crowd-pleasing comedy like Ted, and kudos to Universal for figuring this out.
According to Universal's exit polling, Ted's audience skewed male (56 percent) and younger (52 percent were 30 years of age and under). They awarded the movie a very good "A-" CinemaScore, which implies that strong word-of-mouth should help Ted play well for at least the next month or so.
Magic Mike had to settle for second place behind Ted, though its estimated $39.16 million was a very impressive tally indeed. It's the third Channing Tatum movie this year to open north of $36 million, and if estimates hold it will become director Steven Soderbergh's highest opening ever ahead of Ocean's Twelve ($39.15 million). All that being said, it earned just shy of 50 percent of its weekend box office from Friday showings, which makes it one of the most front-loaded debuts ever. Add in an underwhelming "B" CinemaScore, and there's a good chance that Tatum doesn't get his third $100 million movie of 2012.

Fox must feel silly now for passing on TED.

Avengers dropped out of top ten, just barely. Maybe when final numbers are reported they may creep back in.

Spidey tomorrow.

TED was good ... some really funny stuff ... if you loved Flash Gordan then you have to see this film lol ...

B from me

I saw GI Joe this weekend.  It was really weird.  Duke was half naked most of the time.  But I guess it worked since he found Cobra undercover in his platoon's pants.  But for some reason he machine guned a group of female Cobras with his platoon and then tortured them by sitting on them?  Well it was better than the last one just different.  At least Marlon Waynes was not in this one.

I'm glad Ted is #1 and not Magic Mike. Madea should've been #1, good stuff. Madea reminds me of Ernest and his movies. Like Ernest Goes to Jail, Ernest Goes to Camp, Ernest goes Back in Time. Just switch the name out and you got the same sh!t. Knee slapping funny.

Honestly when I saw that the line to get into Magic Mike when I was going into Ted was about 40 women long I thought that it would be the number one movie. I'm glad it was Ted. It was so damn funny. I loved the full scene with Ted testing the limits with Tammy Lynn. I can't remember when I laughed so hard. I almost hurt my hand from slapping the armrest, and wow was Giovani Ribisi creepy.

I would give it an A

That would all be true, but in my showing of Ted I was amazed how many parents brought their ten and younger to Ted.  Very sad.  Explains a lot in our society.

LOL Dazzler. I saw Magic Mike Friday night and the theater was packed, the women were hootin' and hollerin' during some of the dances. Not a bad flick, a bit shallow IMO. Thought it would deal more with the ugly aspects of stripping and the relationship of Tatum and Cody Horn or the downfall of Adam or Dallas  but still OK

TED was hilarious. I love me some Seth MacFarlane and he did not disappoint. The girl playing Tami-Lynn was effing gorgeous, ALL WOMAN that one, hotter than Kunis IMO

Saw Brave during the week, excellent film. People need to stop holding The Incredibles and Toy Story against Pixar. All their films can't be that great but Brave is near the top IMO. Fooled me with the curse, wrong person.

And any fan of '80s rock needs to go see Rock of Ages, really fun film.

Best trailer of the week for me was the teaser for Despicable Me 2, the minions cracked me up

Caught Ted on Saturday and loved it!  Love Family Guy and Ted brought back some of that magic that's been maybe a little lacking the past couple seasons.  The Flash Gordon stuff was priceless!

Saw Abe Lincoln Vampire Hunter on Sunday.  It was good, but maybe about 15-20 minutes too long.  The film really started to drag by the time he's President.  The horse scene was a bit too much.  And I've never been a big fan of all the slow-mo then high speed action effects, but still the film was worth a watch.  Don't know if I'll get it on DVD or Bluray though.  Maybe redbox.

Going to Amazing Spider-Man TONIGHT! YES!
